Ok, ok I know they're the same game with the only difference being the starting Pokemon, but what would you recommend? Truthfully, I haven't played a Pokemon game since the original 2 on Gameboy WAYYYYY back in the day, so I'm not really partial to any particular Pokemon :P

    Royal sigh.

Pick whichever has the boxart you like best, or whichever version exclusives you prefer (I think it comes down to Mantine or Skarmory this time around). They are completely the same otherwise.

I picked Gold back in the day simply because it had the prettier Lugia sprite. Ironic, isn't it?

Well, with PAX East coming around, getting the exclusives shouldn't be a major issue right? One would imagine you could trade fairly easily.

Unfortunately not. My router uses encryption that is not compatible with the DS :/ I even tried turning off all encryption and couldn't get the DS to go online with Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy 3 :( So local wireless seems to be my only option.

    Lugia's way cooler then Ho-oh

that is the main criteria you should be looking at

Lugia is a bird with giant hands. It's ridiculous. Ho-oh is classy. Lugia is for degenerates and plebians.

Slightly sidetracking this thread for purposes of getting my now pre-ordered game online:

Is there a thread around about getting your DS online without one of those adapters that are now out of production?

I usually buy the one with the coolest exclusive pokémon.
If both pokémons look equally as cool or lame, I buy the one I suspect will be less popular.

The problem might lie in your wireless router. Try a different router.
