Gabe just tweeted this poll from the Washington Post. How PA is tied with "Order of the Stick" is beyond me. Time to fix that.

    The author is frustrated.

He is frustrated because even after depicting a man performing oral sex on a female multiple times in his comic strip, he has not yet successfully attracted a mate. Even after endlessly proving to female readers that he cares deeply for their feelings, and will bend-over backwards to please them - he still does not have a girlfriend. He fights for them. They do not call. He praises their intelligence and strength. They will not remove their clothing. He creates diagrams, graphs, math jokes and homographic puns that perfectly describe his feelings for them. They will not let him touch their breasts. He is frustrated.

He also refers to the movie Avatar, to ensure that some geek pop culture is still present in the comic strip.

Can we have some kind of rule about no threads are allowed to be about XKCD or that liking XKCD is punishable by rape. Anything like that would be helpful.

My cousin used to be a games tester. One of his jobs was to test whether the 101 collectable wizard cards in a Harry Potter game were properly implemented. This meant playing the entire game through with a walkthrough and ensuring that none had been missed. His worksheet went like this

Bug: Only 97 wizard cards currently in game
Ok, we think we found the bug, they should all be there now. Please try again
Bug: Only 93 wizard cards currently in game
argh, we broke something fixing the other bug. should be fixed now, please try again
Bug: Only 100 wizard cards currently in game
almost cracked it! we found the bug for that last one and this build should be perfect, please run it through, this should be the last time
Bug: 103 wizard cards currently in game

Man, he's lucky. If he'd been working with some of the devs I've had to deal with, it'd look more like this:

    Bug 8675309 created:
Only 97 wizard cards currently in game.
Checked cardloc.ini, all cards were listed. Resolving no repro.

    Bug 8675309 Updated:
Only 97 wizard cards currently accessible in game. Follow repro steps for repro.
ran Cardcount.exe unit test, all cards found. Resolving no repro.

    Bug 8675309 Updated:
Only 97 wizard cards currently accessible through gameplay. FOLLOW REPRO STEPS.
Finding all wizard cards is an edge case. Resolving won't fix.

Well that's when you just don't give a damn anymore. It's their game, not yours. If they want it to be a buggy mess let them

but then i am sure the testers catch heat for not finding the problems and bringing them to the attention of the devs like they are paid to do.

even if they did, they will get in trouble for not pointing out that it is still there. your job isn't the place to go 'man whatevs then, i'm outy' unless you have the leverage to do so, which i doubt game testers do.

I like the idea of a tester storming out in a huff (and someone having to care.)

I think it could happen. You see, this show will create a "Top Gun" effect whereby the best and brightest of a generation will go into QA testing. Then, a few years down the line, we will get a wildly popular series of reality shows such as, "The Real Testers of Orange County," and even prime time dramas like, "Desperate Testers."

Oh hey, testing. Testing is fun.

I particularly like when a tester sends me an issue like "Urgent Issue: I got an error when I went to this section of the application, and I am going to log it on your project even though your project was in a completely different section of the app and the error was only caused because i happened to click the button while someone was restarting a server. Can you please explain why this happened and resolve it immediately."

Those are swell. Its not like I was doing anything important anyway.

Oh, and playing WoW on those badboys is like game testing, I guess, insofar that everything I did felt horribly wrong somehow.

Lucky me, my paladin started talking shit to me, about how I never call home nor do I take care of the dishes like I said I would. Then I woke up and had a banana milkshake.

Somehow, I don't think 'THEY' would let you test games on vicodin, which seems somewhat counter-intuitive; vicodin doens't necessarily kill the pain so much as make you not fucking care about it, which is ideal for the excruciating world of games testing.

Maybe he got lucky, but my husband really enjoys his focus testing jobs at Gearbox. He got to see Borderlands before anyone had really heard of it. It went through all kinds of changes!

(Yes, he knows what's in the next DLC for Borderlands. No, I am not telling you.)

Sorry, I don't think he was even supposed to tell me about it. I think I can safely say you'll like it if you play co-op online.

He learned some other weird stuff not related to DLC, though. Apparently Mad Moxxi is Scooter's mom. Ew.

Luckily I started in SQA, and never had to slog through game-testing. It's probably the only reason I moved on to management and didn't, ya know, kill my entire office.

Software QA testers generally at least get listened to when they raise a bug. Game testers are ignored completely. It's like they are sub-human. You look through Dev-Track and these guys have raised the same bug 30 times and it's always been pushed back.

    I'd have killed motherfuckers.

My solution was to start tinkering with the games in my offtime
The theme from The O.C. makes a good title song for a rap fighting game, I tell you what.
