I use depakote. 1k freaking mg/day. I do not suffer migrains, but instead take it as a mood stabalizer for bipolar disorder. My only side effect (aside from any kidney problems that may have come since my last blood test) has been weight gain. I put on about 25-35 lbs. It will unfortunately be different for everyone. Beware reading the side effects from something like wikipedia or webMD. This is a Possible list that Anyone taking the drug has experienced. For exaple, sleepiness is listed. Nope, not one night has depakote helped me to sleep. Give it a try, if you experience side effects that outweigh the positives, then it's time to talk to your doctor about a change.

well, weight gain for me would be a welcome side affect, so i suppose that is not something to worry about. Thanks for the reply

As a pharmacy student, the one thing we learned about Depakote is that if you are a female....DO NOT GET PREGNANT. Use two methods of contraception if you plan on having sex while taking Depakote. If you do get pregnant, there is a few percent chance it will have neural tube defects, and around a 20 percent chance that it will negatively impact the child's future health.

Depakote is used as migraine prophylaxis...meaning, if you do not take it as directed every day, it will not help you at all. Do not double doses if you have a headache oncoming...it will do nothing and may increase adverse effects experienced.

I take the generic version of Depakote and I had severe migraines for a week straight when they increased my dosage from 500 mg to 1000 mg. I still get them on occasion, but they're not as frequent as they were.
