Router Selection

Hi Everybody!

Figured this place would be the best to ask.

I've been playing MW2 on my XBOX 360, and I suffer from terrible lag. I currently use a WRT54G Version 2, if that means anything.

Only today did I try connecting my 360 to my modem directly, and there was a world of difference. I was at 3 bars, and my NAT was often moderate. Without the router, I was all green and my NAT was open.

Is the issue my current router, and should I buy a new one? Any advice on which router to select?

Just turn off your current routers firewall or put your 360 in the DMZ and it should be fine.http://askville.amazon.com/change-DMZ-settings-linksys-router/AnswerViewer.do?requestId=3026691

Put DDWRT on it. I did that and it was like I spent $500 on a new router. The admin pages makes much more sense and have many more useful options, WiFi works really great, DHCP for wireless stuff is much better, DSL connection stopped disconnecting all the time, Borderlands started working perfectly in hosting, Video streaming (youtube, vimeo, GameTrailers.com) got back to working again...

It's kinda scary, but if you read instructions carefully and do everything right, you'll be thanking me forever.

Tomato is better IMO, but pretty much any third-party firmware is what you need. Your router itself is pretty good hardware, it's just being let down by shitty software.

Edit - also bear in mind that you're on an island in the Pacific, so there's only so good your ping can get :P

You've got an amazing router, as long as you follow the above and put some third party firmware on it. I'm running the same one (v.3 instead of v.2), and with dd-wrt you can tweak so many settings to suit your needs, it's great.

I installed DD-WRT, and it works beautifully. MW2 is actually fun now. Thanks guys :)
