By sheer luck, I bumped into my cousin tonight. We start talking about PS3, and how he's all proud of having a 60gb system. I tell him I have one too, and he goes through the list of what it can do:
"PS3, PS2, PS1 games - PSP Games."
Wait, what? I clarified - the PS3 can't play PSP games.
"If you've got the 60gb with the panel that flips up and there's more slots underneath? It can."
Whaaaaat?
Can someone explain this to me? Is this like, a put-the-game-on-a-memory-stick, then play it type of deal? Is anyone familiar with this?
Edit: or is my cousin full of shit?

Maybe he meant the PSP Minis. You can play PSP Minis on PS3 and PSP.
Or maybe he thought of the component cables, and the ability to use your Dualshock 3 with the PSPGo. (Using a dualshock with a Go requires a Playstation 3.)

Yeah, the PS3's possible interactions with the PSP go as follows:
-Can play PSP minis
-Can download PSP content (which can thusly be transferred to a PSP where it may be utilized)
-Can use remote play to "virtual desktop" on to the PS3 from the PSP. Some games may be played like this (like PS1 games and a few other specific examples) but overall it's much more of a novelty than useful.
-Can use Ad-Hoc party to use the PS3 as a network bridge allowing you to play PSP ad-hoc games online with other people from the internets
-Can also hook up the PSP to the PS3 and transfer content from one device to the other zzz
-Probably some other minor thing I'm forgetting
All of this functionality is present with all models of the PS3. Some of it requires the PS3 be connected via ethernet cable to use. The 60GB model "flip up panel" contains boring ol' card readers. I can totally take a compact flash card with pictures on it, and look at them on my PS3.

o_O He doesn't actually have a 60GB PS3, does he?
Without actually seeing it, I'm as sure as I can be that it's a 60. In terms of the panel, what he's talking about is the extra card slots to the left of the disk slot - you just flip up the cover and... let's see here... there's three slots. One says CF, one says SD/miniSD, and the other has a wierd symbol with the word Pro next to it. I've never used 'em on mine.
He's probably talking about PSP Minis or the PS1 games off the store that you can also play on the PS3 - but he said that you can only play these PSP games by using one of those three card slots.
I'm prepared to say he probably has no idea what he's talking about, but when I said (in utter disbelief) "So you're telling me I could be playing God of War: Chains of Olympus on my PS3?" he said "yes."
I reckon if there was a way to play PSP games on the PS3 I'd've known about it two years ago and we wouldn't so often see the bitching about the inability to play PSN-downloadable PSP games on the PS3, but if there was even a chance I figured it was worth investigating.

The slots are for CompactFlash, SD cards and Memory Stick Pro's.
But no, they do seem to have a PSP emulator running on the PS3 (hence minis compatibility) but it's probably not in any shape to run a full PSP game. But any bitching about the inability to play PSP games on the PS3 is pretty silly goose-ish though.
And might I say this thread reminds me of middle school when I had friends claiming they had Super Mario 64 on their Playstation at home.
I miss those days. The internet has taken all the mystery out of this kind of thing. :P
Hahahaha
Yeah, I knew a guy in school who used to tell me all about Tomb Raider 64.
Man, forget middle school. I talked to a grown man who claimed he had a PlayStation3 in the fall of '05 (and as nerds, we all know it didn't come out until Nov. '06). Of course, he said he got it from Japan. When I asked him what games he played on it, he said he couldn't really figure out how to play it because "everything was in Japanese."

Yeah, but you can actually get a surfing pikachu.
I'm going to assume this magical PS3 lives in the same dimension as my friends giant invisible transformer. The one that explodes if anybody but him looks at it.
I always thought there was some capability with the PSP that allowed you to play PS3 games on it or vice versa through WIFI? I don't own one, so maybe that's what he meant.

It's the former. You can use remote play to link a PSP to a PS3, and then remotely do stuff on your PS3. It's pretty limited and rather slow. You can play any PS1 game through remote play, as well as a few selected PS3 games (like, I think the Pixeljunk games can be played via remote play). The connection you'll get is quite slow, so you can't expect to be playing anything that requires a lot of twitch reflexes through remote play without getting extremely frustrated.
The only time I bother with Remote Play is for the Thursday update. My wife is usually watching something on TV when PSN is updated. I just turn on RP beforehand, use my PSP to start downloading shit, and maybe its done and installed by the time I get the TV back.

I once had someone try to convince me they soldered their N64 to their computer so they could play N64 games on it...

They clearly already had the PlayStation10. Do you really think they'd skip all the other numbers?
There's a few I'd like to take for a spin, but wouldn't shell out the $$ for a PSP to play.
Half Minute Hero is at the top of that list.

Remember when other kids convinced you there was a code to make Lara naked on the PSX version of the game? Good times.
I just wish that Japan would start shipping over the PSWiis.

But hey, there used to be rumors back when the PSP was announced that the PS2 would be able to play PSP games.
Anyway, you should ask him to show you this magical PSP game slot that doesn't exist.

Can trade TF2 items or whatever else you're interested in. PM me.
What about Thilly Gooth?
We actually do this on a regular basis. Video too. Usually when family is over. I never thought I'd ever use the slots but now I'm glad I have them.
BC PS3s have the media card slots under said panel (they were removed in the post-BC models), as well as more USB ports (4 vs 2).
