I got this cheap (£12) on the PS3 recently and wow, it really is awful. Not the game, I think the combat system is a ton of fun but the game is so wide of the 60fps standard you expect it to be. That opening sequence on the clock tower feels like it is running at half speed and tears like nobody's business, it's nauseating. After that it isn't so bad but the image looks so dull and it's still not nearly as smooth as you'd expect it to be. The OP really should edit that part regarding the PS3 version to be a bit more critical of it as it really is clunky even post-patch and with the install and really should be considered only as a last resort. Caveat emptor.
Also for some reason the save system is horribly slow, it's like a throwback to the PS2 days with how slow it is at reading the HDD. :?
I really want to make it through Angel Slayer, but I just don't know if I can do it. Sometimes I have these amazing streaks, where I made a beautiful comeback and killed three of the dog guys with me being one hit away from death and them all at full health. Then of course I start the next fight and promptly am destroyed. So tough, yet so fun.

Alright, alright, I didn't get all that far into DMD, so my opinion here might be skewed. But even still, Bayonetta's got issues that manifest across all difficulties. DMC3 is pretty consistent till the end of very hard. Although, I did forget about the boss rush and that one mission that involves spinning the tower around. I will give you that those were pretty awful the first time through. Most of the rest of the issues, like Arkham or the chess pieces, are more bland than an aggressive impediment to my having fun.
Oh, also 5:30 into this video. So neener neener and shame and etc.

Some people are much more sensitive to visual disturbances than others. to the point that it can make them feel physically sick or motion sick.
This is dependent on the individual and not something you can really predict.
I think an addition adding a warning or note that individual mileage will vary would be quite sufficient. Overreacting because of one persons extreme reaction would skew the average too far I think.

Tips: Use butterflies + moon accessory. Activate butterflies before you trigger every stage. When you are damaged, try to leave one monster alive, switch to butterfly + heal item, then run to the corner and do the long taunt "I've got a feeling" you will get more magic than the butterflies use just in case you miss a dodge on the enemy and she heals every half second with that taunt. When they come over, dodge and run to the other side. Keep it up. It works best on the little angels (or slightly bigger ones in a pinch). I wouldn't do it on, eg, a dog.

I got Bayonetta for PS3 today and truly wow, i fully agree it's horrible. I mean, it's worse than relatively bad PC ports. It's nowhere near "individual mileage" level since the frame drops are constant. All the time, everywhere, every fight more or less. I mean, some fights just become a lot more boring* because of it, others become complete clusterfucks of random colours flying around on the screen at 10 FPS. I don't know if I've seen a single cutscene that looked good yet either because of it.
I haven't gotten further than level 3-4, but so far, the port is bad. Disappointing because the game under it seems really good, but it's hard to really get into it and trance up with cool stuff like in DMC because of constant frame drops in a fast action game. I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess this didn't pass any QA at all, or the QA was simply ignored.
Damnit i want a 360. I'll see if i can cram some enjoyment out of it and net some huge combos. They probably shouldn't have bothered to port it though.
*Edit: Actually less entertaining, not more boring, it's an amazing game hindered by poor performance.

Did you do the install?
There are definitely some drops in the city chapter and the introductory sequence.
But most of the game is pretty good.
And yes I'm sorry mate, but it really is individual mileage level because many individuals here with ps3 found their mileage pretty good so you claiming your own impression is suddenly an objective fact isn't necessarily going to make it so.

True.
I never played the 360 version so I can't compare (and this is probably a good thing), but I never found Bayonetta's slow-downs to be all that annoying. I would probably have found them to be a normal part of the game was it not for reviews and people reminding me that the 360 version is much smoother. And I didn't find it that horrible pre-install either.

Actually you're right, I'm withrawing a lot of my criticism. I had done the install, but i left the PS3 while it was going, and the game was on when i came back. I just figured that it restarted itself, but it turns out it didn't. And i was left out of a lot of performance since i hadn't restarted it.
It's still frame dropping (obviously), but it's playable. Awesome game.
So I was doing some research of gender representation in video games, and thought that Bayonetta would be a bit too difficult to deal with, but did come across some interesting things if anyone's interested. This is an anti-Bayonetta opinion that focuses entirely on the advertising (she clearly hasn't actually played it, at least not past the first few levels), and this is a pro-Bayonetta article that I feel is a much more interesting and intelligent look at the game. BUT! I didn't just put that first one there to say 'lol feminists are silly and reactionary' (although I think that one is). If a game carries a message that women can be powerful, equal to men, etc, and that men shouldn't objectify them, who needs to hear that message? Feminists, who already know this? Or young males who are often shown the message that women are objects to be ogled and possessed?
Basically I'm saying that maybe having a really misogynistic and sexist ad campaign for a game that actually challenges those preconceptions is the perfect combination, because it draws in the people who have the most to learn from a feminist message about "how cool it is to be a girl".
I'm not sure if this is intentional, maybe the ad campaigns (and that second article shows that the ads were really pretty bad) were just designed to bring in more money by exploiting female sexuality, but the combination is pretty interesting, and carries what I think is a good feminist message a bit better than an ad campaign of 'women are strong and equal to men buy this game'.

Personally, I didn't care all that much about how Bayonetta look and to be honest she looks a hell of a lot better than the GoW guys
As for Bayonetta powers and how she wields them, again I didn't find it all that sexist. The producer were smart enough to make her strong, through and through. Instead of her being this weird strong female character, but always needing saving by men (*cough* Kate, from Lost *cough*). So what her powers made her naked. The only ones who get their panties in a bunch about that are people who believe that the woman body should be shrouded from the eyes of men who can't control their baser urges. Bayonetta is a strong enough character to not care how she looks, or how society look at her.

The difference is if you looked like a GOW guy you'd probably have people thinking you were a thug and a criminal. It's not taken to be an ideal you should head towards.
Whereas if you look like bayonetta you are a model. This is taken to be an ideal you head towards.
They're equally stupid ideals, it's just one is a positive comparison that 99% of women cannot ever hope to achieve yet are implicitly expected to by many people.
Whereas I don't know any guy who wants to look like those guys. No male models look like that. The ideal guy is more like the Uncharted main.

I never understand whether people are arguing about the character in the game or using the character to argue about some social issue.
I mean I don't really care either way since the argument doesn't interest me, but it would be nice to have some frame to it.

My approach is simple.
You could change her body shape to the female average and she'd still be sexy as fuck because her sexy is her confidence, not her looks.

Well, they are mostly thugs and criminals. The games have kind of glossed over those particular elements of the story, though.

Yeah. You had to read the manual to figure that out.
Which shows that while action games are getting better at their storytelling parts, they really have a long way to go.

Well, I meant the shit that I've heard goes down in the comics, not Marcus and his desertion but it was to save his father so he totally has the moral high ground eat it The Man!

Being a PS3 guy, I initially took "GOW" to mean "God of War" instead of "Gears of War". That caused me to read the rest of the sentence as above, and to be very confused about some of posts that followed.
I loved the demo to Bayonetta when it came out, but was put off on buying due to all the poor port reviews. After the patch hit, I was already swamped with all the good games that steadily been coming out since October. I recently picked this up on the cheap at Blockbuster ($25 used + $15 gift card, thanks Mom!), and it's just as awesome as the demo! Unfortunately, other than the parts I played the hell out of on the demo, I suck. One Pure Platinum, several silver and bronze, and a couple of Stone statues.

The first thing you need to do is wear out your R trigger dodging so much. Second, you need to learn how to maneuver the battlefield to avoid fighting more than one baddie at once. Third, figure out the properties of your comboes. PKP is great for quick damage after a dodge, and PPPKKK (the one with the sweeps) can knock down Grace and Glory. Air combos are typically safer than ground, but a lot of enemies can still reach you up there.

Yes, this is probably the biggest skill hurdle. If you've ever played Ninja Gaiden, the combo strings are vaguely similar in that different individual hits have unique properties of varying effectiveness against different enemies. Figuring out which hits you need to get out at any given time will make you significantly more effective. At first, you'll just want to learn which hits are wicked weaves, but there's other moves (like the sweep) that you'll want in certain situations. After that, the big thing is the learn to dodge offset, which will allow you to pull those hits out in a fraction of the time.
I made a post a while ago that kind of aggregates a lot of the stuff we know about that's not explicitly stated anywhere ingame:
Alright, I have started a hidden move list of anything that I don't remember being explicitly documented in the game or manual. This should all (or at least mostly) be pretty well known by now, since the vast majority has already been posted in the thread at some point or are holdovers for another game that anyone playing this is probably familiar with.
Please to add or edit.
General:
Shooting - Shooting your pistols can be done at any time by holding X/Square. You can also mash X/Square to double your rate of fire. This doesn't have to be done all that quickly.
Taunting - A short taunt can be done by tapping LB/L1. This fills one unit on the magic gauge. A longer taunt can be done by holding LB/L1. This fills several units on the magic gauge. Both enrage enemies.
Lift/Throw - Large objects in levels (like cars and dumpsters) can be lifted by pressing X/Square near them, then thrown by pressing X/Square again. The throw can be directed by pointing the stick or by locking on to an enemy.
Enemy Step - You can use enemies as a platform to jump off of, as in Devil May Cry (Enemy Step) or Ninja Gaiden (Wind Path). The twist in Bayonetta is that she has weapons equipped on her feet, which will either fire (guns) or slash (claws/skates) when an enemy is jumped off of. There is an achievement for killing an enemy this way.
Million Stab/Kick/Punch - Similar to the Crazy Combos in DMC3, many combos feature a hit (PPPPP, PPPPK, PPP-K) which can be intensified by by mashing the P/K button. Without the accompanying mashing, these generally display as two flurries of attacks. Also applies to the Bullet Climax (360P/K) move for the pistols/shotguns, the hold modifier for the ice skates, and the PP-P hit for the whip.
Risers - As in a lot of action games, certain moves allow Bayonetta to either launch an enemy in the air, or launch an enemy and rise into the air with it. These are the Lock On + Back + P/K moves for all weapons. Tapping P/K will launch an enemy normally. Holding P/K will cause Bayonetta to rise into the air with the enemy. This also applies to other ways of accessing that particular hit, for example P-P or KK-P.
Punishment (Stomp) - This functions similarly to Wild Stomp in DMC3. When an enemy is lying on the ground, walk up close to them. A dialog should pop up that reads "Punishment" with the appropriate kick button for your system displayed. Mash K to perform the move. Like with the Counter/Evade/etc dialogs that pop up in boss fights, this can be performed before the dialog itself appears.
Punishment (Slam) - When an enemy is in the air above Bayonetta (on the ground) within arm's reach, a dialog should pop up that reads "Punishment" with the appropriate punch button for your system displayed. Mash P to perform the move. Like with the Counter/Evade/etc dialogs that pop up in boss fights, this can be performed before the dialog itself appears, and often must be.
Situational Torture Attacks - Most torture attacks are enemy specific, but one class of enemy (Affinity/Ardor) has several torture attacks which are situational. The iron maiden torture attack is performed when Bayonetta is in front of the enemy. The guillotine torture attack is performed when Bayonetta is behind the enemy. The chain + wheel torture attack is performed when Bayonetta is in the air. The tombstone torture attack is performed when the enemy is lying on the ground.
Weapon Specific:
Shuraba:
Hold Modifier - The hold modifier for the katana is a charged AOE slash. Much like charging a Dragon Sword UT in Ninja Gaiden, there are two levels of charge, and the weapon will flash when each is reached. Dodge Offset will save these charges.
Laser - Hold the lock on button while doing nothing else. Bayonetta will slowly draw a circle, then fire a laser.
Durga:
Fire/Lightning - The claws can switch between fire and lightning at any time with 360P/K. Depending on the element, the weapon's moveset changes, which will be reflected in practice mode. Fire claws are much slower than lightning claws, but will allow Bayonetta to attack flaming enemies and walk on lava.
Hold Modifier - The hold modifier for the claws will either be an electrical burst (lightning) or a bomb (fire). The bomb will stay wherever it spawns and explode after a few seconds.
Million Kick/Punch - The million kick/punch moves will change to a combination million kick/punch when claws are equipped on both hands and feet.
Odette:
Hold Modifier - The hold modifiers on the KKKK kicks are million kicks. K must be held until the weapon flashes, then can be mashed. Performing the hold and million kick on the last kick of the KKKK combo will trigger a Wicked Weave. On kicks in most other combos, the hold modifier is a spin attack like the 360K attack.
Freeze - When an enemy is hit with a series of attacks from the ice skates, it will become encased in a large block of ice. Like other large objects in the game, the ice block can be lifted and thrown with X/Square. The enemy will break out of the ice when thrown, or automatically after a short amount of time.
Kulshedra:
Flaming Enemies - The range on whip attacks will allow you to attack flaming enemies without taking damage.
Slapping - Under a number of circumstances, punch attacks can be transformed from whip attacks into slaps, which are much faster. By default, the whip's longest punch combo is PPP. Slapping adds a fourth punch (maybe more, don't remember), therefore adding the combos PPPP, PPPPK, and so forth. The fourth slap is a Wicked Weave.
Hold Modifier - The hold modifier for the whip will lasso an enemy and pull them towards Bayonetta. Immediately after, punches will be transformed into slaps. Stronger enemies cannot be pulled.
Lasso Zip - Pressing the stick towards an enemy while performing the lasso move will cause Bayonetta to zip over to an enemy instead of pulling them towards her. In impact, there is a hit than can put a mild stun on some enemies. Immediately after, punches will be transformed into slaps.
Lasso Spin - Rotating the stick while performing the lasso move will cause Bayonetta to lasso an enemy, then spin it around her, damaging all other enemies hit with it. This can be extended by continuing to rotate the stick. At the end of the move, she will throw the enemy, which can be directed by pointing the stick. Possibly also locking on.
Counter Attack - After performing a counter attack with the Moon of MaBlockAccessory, the automatic attack can be followed up with slaps.
Kilgore:
Kilgore Glitch - Equip Kilgore on feet on one weapon set and a weapon like the claws on feet on the other weapon set. Perform PPP-K or PPPPK with the second weapon set, then switch to the Kilgore set immediately after the million kick begins. There will be severalfold more rockets launched than usual and your combo multiplier will skyrocket.
[tiny]I considered labeling all those in the format "_____ Climax." I already regret not doing so.[/tiny]
Stuff that's wrong in that post:
-Kulshedra's lasso spin isn't hold P + 360. It's hold P + back. You can still extend it by rotating the stick, though.
-All weapons have juggles (lockon + back + tap P/K). Not all weapons have risers (lockon + back + hold P/K). Hand pistols and the whip spring to mind. I think all foot weapons do, though.
-You can shoot much faster with the pistols than I thought. Tapping relatively slow will double your fire rate. To fire faster than that, you need to be mashing the button -very- fast. This also applies to any time in the game that you're shooting anything, like turrets and stuff.
Stuff that's not in there:
-I didn't actually talk about counter attacks. If you have the block accessory and block an attack with the same timing as bat within, you'll do an automatic counter attack. This also triggers the longest witch time you have access to, and you will still get it on enemies that are normally immune to witch time, like Jeanne and Grace/Glory. You do not get witch time during counter attacks (or at all) on NSIC, the highest difficulty level.
-The <--> P/K moves (Tetsuzanoku and whatever the kick one is) can also be used as wicked weaves, but it requires magic. I think it's 3 units on the gauge. The <--> K weave can ground enemies that are in the air. The <--> P weave has a much longer range than you'd expect, and there are several bosses on which you can abuse this fact.
-The raven form teleport dash (doubletap lockon) works when you aren't in raven form. I believe it's been said that it also puts you in the correct position to immediately enemy step.
-The above teleport dash costs magic. It's easy to not notice this fact, and then be confused when you hit the button and it doesn't happen.
-Raven form has projectile attacks that you can do by hitting P and K. They work exactly like Vergil's summoned swords in DMC3. One of them summons a bunch of projectiles that quickly fire at whatever enemy you're locked on to. The other one summons a bunch of projectiles that spin in a circle around you until they hit an enemy.
-If you break out of panther form by attacking, there will be a claw slash effect denoting some extra damage.
-Panther form doubles as a dodge offset, with all the requisite mechanical implications.

Thanks for the replies, these last two posts were a goldmine of information! Just started Chapter 5 last night. Other than the first chapter, I think I've gotten a Stone Statue ("Ooh, what a dame!") for every one. I've gotten pretty good on some of the individual Verses, but there's usually a boss battle that will screw me up; especially where the boss (Fortitudo, I'm looking at you!) is a distance away and you can't run up to him. My strategy on these were to wait until a dragon head shot forward, dodge, and hope to go into witch time.
So far my favorite combo has been PPKKK, but it can take a little while to wind up. For the Million Stab/Kick/Punch, are you saying to press and hold P/K to activate this, or to repeatedly keep pressing it at the end of a combo? I know that on PPKKK, for example, you can press and hold each of the K's for few seconds, during which she'll continue to keep firing her guns (yeah, yeah, I love Scarborough Fair), before continuing on with the combo.

That's basically the only strategy for Fortitudo. Just learn his tells and he's easy. The other thing I figured out on accident is that if you dogde his lava pillars with witch time, you get a nifty series of platforms leading up to a climax attack, rather than having to hunt down the hourglass.

I hardly ever use the hold-to-shoot method; it's not worth it except to do a dodge offset (IMO). More powerful firearms like Kilgore and Zillions make it worthwhile, but with SF it's more a stylistic choice than a tactical one.
I think the worst thing in this game (and it's only a problem the first time through) is that some of the cutscenes are just long and mostly boring conversations. Especially near the beginning of the game. You've just had a small taste of the game when the first level ends then it's bla bla bla bla bla, boring nonsense, bla bla bla bla.
Otherwise the game is awesome. I just skip all cutscenes that involve people chatting about silly things.
You know what would be an awesome crossover? Bayonetta & Darksiders!
Maybe, maybe....
Bayonetta could be Lilith!

@Houn: If you like DMC, you will like this. Basically, this is DMC5.
There was no DMC 2 or 4, I don't know what you're talking about.
Man, 4 was pretty all right. It had a lot of the same problems as 3 (hey, let's play these levels again), but I liked the interaction between Nero and Dante, and I liked all the new movesets. The only downside is lack of Nevan.
Yeah. DMC4 was good, but it felt too much like DMC1.
That being said I really liked Nero and hope he's used in future games.
I was a big fan of Jonny Yong Bosch, but he's been in too much dubbing, and his voice is too easily recognizable these days. Still, I liked his Nero, and I hope we see more of him.

DMC4 is great. I don't even know what would drive a person to say otherwise, unless they just didn't like playing games that are fun.
Bosch is at least typecast sensibly enough that when you hear his voice come out of some character, your reaction can usually be "oh, of course it's that guy."

Holding the button is what I was calling the hold modifier. That works on every hit of every combo with every weapon. For the million hits, you press the button repeatedly for that particular hit in the combo. For example, in the PPPPKK combo, the first K is a million kick. So, if you press PPPPK, then mash K as hard as you can, she'll do a crazy continuous flurry of kicks instead of the usual two short bursts. The other good thing you get out of this is that by performing the million kick completely will trigger a wicked weave on its last hit, which wouldn't normally be there.

This isn't a DMC thread, but I want to provide context for people who might be overexposed to him after Bleach, Geass, Gurren Lagann, etc. To be clear, I like his work, and he's one of the main reasons I enjoy the Bleach dub, as well as the performances in DMC4.

I wish more game developers would use them
Not instadeath QTEs though, those suck
Okay im done
Oh, also 5:30 into this video. So neener neener and shame and etc.
All right, people. It is not a gerbil. It is not a hamster. It is not a guinea pig. It is a death rabbit. Death. Rabbit. Say it with me, now.
I agree completely.
I mean I don't really care either way since the argument doesn't interest me, but it would be nice to have some frame to it.
You could change her body shape to the female average and she'd still be sexy as fuck because her sexy is her confidence, not her looks.
All right, people. It is not a gerbil. It is not a hamster. It is not a guinea pig. It is a death rabbit. Death. Rabbit. Say it with me, now.
Which shows that while action games are getting better at their storytelling parts, they really have a long way to go.
All right, people. It is not a gerbil. It is not a hamster. It is not a guinea pig. It is a death rabbit. Death. Rabbit. Say it with me, now.
Just never said in-game because you know you were too busy killing shit and being manly man as it usually happens.
I made a post a while ago that kind of aggregates a lot of the stuff we know about that's not explicitly stated anywhere ingame:
All right, people. It is not a gerbil. It is not a hamster. It is not a guinea pig. It is a death rabbit. Death. Rabbit. Say it with me, now.
I hardly ever use the hold-to-shoot method; it's not worth it except to do a dodge offset (IMO). More powerful firearms like Kilgore and Zillions make it worthwhile, but with SF it's more a stylistic choice than a tactical one.
You know what would be an awesome crossover? Bayonetta & Darksiders!
Maybe, maybe....
Otherwise the game is awesome. I just skip all cutscenes that involve people chatting about silly things.

[tiny]Un[/tiny]confirmed [tiny]rumor[/tiny]: Bayonetta will be in MvC3.
@Houn: If you like DMC, you will like this. Basically, this is DMC5.
There was no DMC 2 or 4, I don't know what you're talking about.
Then you will like this.
Man, 4 was pretty all right. It had a lot of the same problems as 3 (hey, let's play these levels again), but I liked the interaction between Nero and Dante, and I liked all the new movesets. The only downside is lack of Nevan.
That being said I really liked Nero and hope he's used in future games.
I was a big fan of Jonny Yong Bosch, but he's been in too much dubbing, and his voice is too easily recognizable these days. Still, I liked his Nero, and I hope we see more of him.
All right, people. It is not a gerbil. It is not a hamster. It is not a guinea pig. It is a death rabbit. Death. Rabbit. Say it with me, now.
This isn't a DMC thread, but I want to provide context for people who might be overexposed to him after Bleach, Geass, Gurren Lagann, etc. To be clear, I like his work, and he's one of the main reasons I enjoy the Bleach dub, as well as the performances in DMC4.
So, yes, buy DMC4 and Bayonetta.
