And I'm super late on the topic of combat engis but setting up a level one sentry off to the side out of the view of the enemy team and killing like 5 people is so fun.

Mostly I just remember this happening once on Goldrush 1-2, I set up a level one off to the far left of the attic on that little raised area that leads to the tunnel to red spawn, while a bunch of people were pushing the cart and a bunch of people were shooting them to defend it.

it won us the gaaaame son.

Are you me? I did this very thing yesterday.

You are blowing my mind right now. I don't even know what to believe.

I think it is a common place to combat engi but that doesn't make it any less HILARIOUS, AWESOME, and FUN.

Oh I noticed something interesting, unlike what I had previously thought, sentries do have a spherical area of awareness displayed when you are placing them. I'm not sure if it used to be different or I just never noticed before.

Yes, I would agree with this. More A/D control point in general would be refreshing.

I was going to retire after my PLR map but I'm seriously considering making one of these.

Instant respawn gives too much of an advantage to defenders.

I'll occasionally hop on instaspawn Lazytown if I just want to shoot some manz instead of actually playing a game, but I think I've only ever seen such a game end once.

It seems like some classes (spy and engineer, in particular) would play a lot differently when enemies don't arrive in spaced waves but instead trickle in continuously. I tend to avoid those classes when I play on instaspawn servers; anyone have any better luck with them?

I played a pub that was running Toy Fort, and the entire thing was a gigantic stalemate.

    But double cross? Wonderful map

I'm a sniper first, and Doublecross is absolutely fucking murder. There are two million entrances into the main base (that never gets defended) meaning you have absolutely no safety and the lines of sight for sniping aren't very great either.

Now, for a comparison, Nucleus has a similar situation where the sniping positions are also open (but not to the extent of Doublecross) but what you get in exchange for that disadvantage are some stellar lines (basically the whole bridge running up to the point is a sniper's dream since the other team has to run right at you).

2fort, by contrast went the other way where you're incredibly safe as a sniper and you get stellar lines of sight. This went too far over into the other direction and something (while nice) that I think could have been fixed.

I dislike yukon because it has a lot of spam happy control points. Can get a couple demos going and put the whole place on lockdown. There are also a few chokepoints that are extremely soldier/demo friendly. Much as I hate snipers, I can't name a single spot that gives good lines of sight for long range fighting. So you can't even break through a sticky nest without an uber.

Mmm, there's some tunnel spots. Of course, they're usually watched like hawks. The map's probably a better huntsmen map though.

there used to be a PA arena server, but it's gone, and none of the current PA servers have any arena maps on them

(unless you count zot's SE++ server having arena_coryinthehouse)

I think all the whining about arena finally got them removed.

Jon's server still has them in the rotation I think.. but people never play there anymore.

Except that it's just an inferior version of both sudden death and koth.

Somewhere at Valve's offices, in the boiler room, there's a desk with a nameplate titled "Arena Designer". Throughout the workday you can hear sobs and whispers of "5 minute spawn time" echoing quietly throughout the basement.

On the top floor lies an office with the nameplate title "KOTH Designer" next to the door. Inside there's employee of the month trophies strewn about, alongside bottles of champagne, and there's a window view to across the street where there's a women's college recreational gym.

At least, that'd be the case if there was justice in the world.

The fact that you don't appreciate a gametype where you have to actually tactically evaluate your situation in order to preserve your life so your team doesn't become distinctly disadvantaged, and do this all the time, rather than be able to just keep throwing yourself against the other team until their wall falls, does not make said gametype bad.

It just illustrates the point that somehow the gaming community has divided itself into deathmatch-camp and not-deathmatch-camp and only a select few actually see both as valid ways to play a game.
