If I were queuing up for DPS I'd sure as fuck wouldn't go afk short of losing my finger or something. That's just way too long of a wait to afk and have to do it again.
It's easy to forget you queued up at all when you're waiting 15 minutes. It's not like most people spend the entire wait just staring at their screen.
:? You all don't run around Dalaran in circles for hours?
When I queue as DPS in the LFD tool, it's right after I pick up all of the AT dailies. I try to complete as many as possible before the queue pops.
Usually I get all of the Hrothgar's landing ones done, the get snobolds (or eggs) one, both quests in the cult camp nw of the tournament, and (depending on which character), solo Chillmaw. Usually it pops before I hit the Citadel daily.
Or what's happened to me twice now.. Log in, queue up, go get a drink, because it's going to take 15 mins anyway, come back to see that I've been removed because i didn't accept..

I alt-tab when I'm on my rogue and watch a video or something.
Then again, I have WoW play sounds even when minimized.
Yeah, I often do that too. I'd never get into a queue if I couldn't hear it in the background. The problem still remains that I forget though and wander off to make a snack or something. ;-P

I wish that someway, somehow, that I could save every one of us
So, warriors/druids/pallies/dks queuing as dps - I'm curious, what's so horrific about tanking to you that you won't do it? The speed difference in queues, by my perspective, is enough that you could gear up both tank and dps faster together than you could just dps by itself.
Personally, I'm loving tanking, so it's win/win for me. I'm just curious.

Not everybody enjoys or is interested in tanking.
I will admit that I have queued my DK and pally as DPS on some occasions (usually because I'm either going to be tanking the rest of the night in a raid setting or I just finished tanking a raid). My warrior has shit for DPS gear :P

On my overgeared for heroics bear tank I love the instant tank queue. I can set the pace of the run (it goes to 11).
When I was gearing up my DK to tank it was horrible, hearing "lolol you dont have 30k hp, omg i can't healz you" every other run is trying. The only reason I did it was because the pug tanks I was getting were horrible.
Being the MT for my guild's raids or Heroic runs I like to take a break every now and then and queue up as DPS for my daily Frosty while I do my AT/BG dailies. A third of the time though I end up tanking due to a tank dropping from Oculus/HoS, or the tank who does stay is a fresh 80 and the heroic if HoR. Just cause I love to tank means I want to do it all the time. God bless dual specs.
Could be why my warlock has done exactly 1 frost daily in 2 weeks. Wait 5 minutes then say screw it and log on to my druid.
It's really odd though, on my mage, I never wait more than 5 minutes in queue. On my lesser geared rogue or warlock, I'll wait 15-20 minutes or more. So on a character which no longer needs any frost badges, I'll get in the daily random heroic without hardily any waiting. While my other two characters have to wait longer. Makes me think there's some sort of grouping algorithm which tries to put at least one really well geared or experienced person in a group to help speed things along.

This happens for me too. My TOC25 geared Hunter gets into instances in roughly 5 minutes, my however-the-fuck geared Shaman has to wait 15+ minutes.
The reason for this is the bolded bit. Blizzard has stated that the LFD functions so that it tries to group more experienced characters with less experienced ones, thus shorter queue times for characters who don't need Triumph gear anymore.
Happy: Remember all those conq tokens we weren't getting? Yeah, they showed up tonight. 4 total dropped between DBS, BQL, and Putricide and I managed to snag the one more I needed to upgrade my gloves.
Hope: All we have for Sunday now is Sindragosa, lets hope we can get her down on 25s.
Hate: My 79 lock queued up for a random (trying to get at least enough badges for the chest when he hits 80 to replace the heirloom). We roll Occulus and wave byebye to the tank who had queued.
Hate: We were lined up for a shot at LK10 on Friday night, and it turns out too many people aren't going to be there Oh well, I need the badges to build up my DPS set.

Was this in the Bloodlust BG? If so, I was the Pally in that group.
Tonight my random heroic had a Ret Pally with an average gear ilvl of 168 doing 1.7k DPS, I was impressed. I assume he was someone's alt rather than someone's first 80 though.

I can not get drunk enough to be even vaguely ok with being on top of the dps meter while tanking (nor can I seem to get drunk enough to not look). Since I can tank most instances in cat for at least long enough to notice I should switch to bear, its ok if I rip aggro from the tank while dpsing. If I'm tanking I really can't do anything to significantly increase the speed of the group when no one is breaking 2k at any point in the instance. So I take my non-instant queue, get some quests done, have a quick instance and seem to get more done in an hour of playing than I would if I queued as a tank and got in immediately. Not to mention I'm incredibly less frustrated with my groups that way.

Happy: I can fly cruisers in EVE, hoping to leverage that to a fitting that will allow me to mine and rat in high sec (low skill points)
Hope: My first PLEX sold for enough to apparently fund my gaming for several months, so I'm hoping the market elevates so I can sell this left over one for way more
Hate: I just realized how much time it's going to take me in real time to get my skills up to par for null sec good times. Looks like I'll be playing way more FFXIII and GoW3 than EVE
Counter-hate: that one tank that gets into a group each day and goes "can someone else tank I want to DPS?"
Had three of these in low level instances last night.
"Shit no one else here is a tank class... *drop*"
"Hi druid can you tank?"
"Hi mage (it worked because we just vote kicked him and the mage tanked), go ahead and tank this I don't have my shield with me."
You can click on a persons name and report them for spam, you can click on a persons name and ignore them. Now we need a "Refuses to do the job they signed up for" way of removing people from randoms. Can get rid of bad DPS for that as well.

I would love to be able to report "tanks" that have no intention of tanking. Healers, too. Though I've rarely run into healers trying to pull that.
Happy: Heroic Saurfang 25 down, finally. Fuck that fight.
Hate: The only reason we weren't there ALL NIGHT was because of hilariously wonderful RNG on Marks of the Fallen Champion. After many hours of mage, mage, mage, holy priest we ended up with rogue, ret, feral, and then both resto shamans, I think. It's dumb how much easier it is when certain classes end up with it.
Hilarious: Our heroic Festergut kills. It's like Brutallus. A good 12 seconds AFTER the enrage he dies, due to DoTs and some bubble taunt bullshit from paladins or tanks with cooldowns up, and most of the raid on the ground.
Tank kills are even better, like our first time at HeroicBeasts. He enraged and everyone died (during his stomp), he had probably less than 3% life left and me and the other tank popped our wings and burned him while he was stunned. Ret gear dropped, belt and ring I think.

On our BQL25 kills I've learned to keep my mouse cursor over the divine shield button just in case, because we're usually right on the enrage when she dies.

I'm all like, oh, I should check on my bank alt! And away I go.
Usually I'll be okay if I'm doing dailies or something, but there's not really very many dailies I still do.
Then again, I have WoW play sounds even when minimized.

So he isn't there as a tank but has at least 10 points in tank talents.
Not everyone is going to want to spend gold on gems that will be replaced soon but his mixture of "dps" and "tank" gear is kind of confusing.
EDIT:
I really can't get over the glyphs. Come on. I need to study this thing.
Hate: Lost the roll for my BiS cloak, which wouldn't be so bad, except I'm wearing a 226 ilevel cloak.
Happy: Got a new tanking belt on my DK.
