Finally got a PS2, now I need games.

I got a good deal on a trade on gametz, and the ps2 should arrive at my apartment today. Now I'm looking for some recommendations on what games I should get. I completely missed out on everything PS2. I was a Xbox fanboy, I admit. My favorite genres are platformers, rpgs, and shooters. Other than that I'm pretty much open to anything except sports games and realistic racing games like gran turismo. I've just never been into them. I'll even take PS1 recommendations. The PS2 can play those, right? I'm interested in the ratchet and clank games, but I have no idea where to start with those. Anyway, what should I play?
Anything Shin Megami Tensei is a good choice really, especially Persona 2, 3 and 4.
Front Mission 4 is good and you can probly find it on the cheap. Final Fantasy X, Odin Sphere, Rogue Galaxy, Neo Geo Battle Colosseum was fun. The Guilty Gear games are great, Ateleir Iris the original.
The Zone of the Enders games are fantastic action games with giant robots and filled with awesome. Robot Alchemic Drive/R.A.D. is hilarious and fun, especially multiplayer with a friend. Grandia III and Grandia II, and the original Grandia (PS1.) all great games. Tales of Legendia was fun for me...
There's all the metal gear games from 1-3, all playable on PS2, and you can get them all at once in a nifty well priced package now. Seriously though the PS2 has so many games its ridiculous, and many of them are awesomely good. It's still my favourite system.
Ratchet and Clank. Seriously these games are sweet. Jak too. I would also recommend Ico and Shadow of the Colosus. I still playthrough Kingdom Hearts 1&2 every now and then as well.
Just now getting a PS2??? Geeez. Get Shadow of the Colossus. (though I heard the frame rate is pretty bad. I've only played it on my 60G ps3 and it was fine on there)
I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.

Which ratchet and clank games are the best? And which Jak and Daxter games are the best? I've played Daxter on the psp and enjoyed it. Are there any I should play first?
I have another question too. Are there any games that are still played online on the PS2? I just learned that up your arsenal has online multiplayer. Do people still play that?

Well, Jak and Daxter is a straight up platformer, while Jak 2 is a platformer but also a kind of GTA-lite, with a city to explore and vehicles to jack. You also get guns, though they are cartoony and fit within the world. Honestly both are good and it all comes down to your personal preferences. 3 is basically 2, but with slightly more stuff and less difficulty.
I don't think people really play online anymore. The ps2 never really had any truly great online titles to begin with.
Seriously Ico and Shadow Of The Colossus are probably as good a starting point as you're going to get
EDIT: Also, all three Timesplitters games. Well up there with the best console FPS' of all time. It was made by a bunch of the people who did Goldeneye after all
ratchet and clank 2 is the best one of the series if memory serves, but its been a long time since ive played the ps2 ones. 2 (going commando) and 3 (up your arsenal) are both really great anyway, and worth playing. also the first sly cooper game.
disgaea 1/2/phantom brave
persona 3/4
SMT nocturne/dds1/dds2
ico/shadow of the colossus
dark cloud 2
suikoden 3/5
ratchet and clank series
gitaroo man
beyond good and evil
not even going to mention the long, long list of great ps1 games.
God of War 1 & 2
Metal Gear Solid 1,2, & 3
Castlevania Symphony of the Night
Einhander - (If you can find it!!)
Shadow of the Colossus
ICO
Devil May Cry Series
Resident Evil 4
The Grey GOAT on

"Faster, Faster, until the thrill of speed overcomes the fear of death." -HST
GTA: San Andreas Any of the GTA games really, but just play one of them because they aren't significantly different.
Ratchet & Clank 1, 2 & 3. 2 is best but may as well start with 1. Agreed
Ico
Shadow of the Colossus I don't recommend these as the first games. My rating is 2/5 for SoTC.
Persona 3: FES Only get this one if you are into grinding
God Hand Great for action games fanatic. Difficulty curve does exist, but one of the best out there.
Devil May Cry 1 and 3 Great games.
Fatal Frame 2
Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction
Bully
Gun
Odin Sphere
Persona 4
Resident Evil 4
Okami
Silent Hil 2
Prince of Persia: Sands trilogy.
Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3.
Beyond Good & Evil
Viewtiful Joe is awesome as well. I had some fun times with Jak and Daxter because it was one of the best looking games on the PS2. I hated Jak 2's overworld though.
We are talking about Persona 3, where you go up a tower killing enemies with each floor not being significantly different than another? And where you use arcades and stuff to up your stats? And where you have to talk with tedious conversations to get new trees?
Its a grindy game. I don't know what to tell you. The tower is basically a dungeon crawler with the side effect of being tedious.
Well, if its not grindy, then it sure as hell is repetitive.
Shadow of the Colossus
God Hand
Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne
This is the holy trinity of PS2 games.
Other good games are:
Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence
Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga 1 & 2 (really one game, get both)
Prince of Persia: Sands of Time (although I'd recommend the Gamecube version over this one)
Few other notes on suggestions in this thread
ICO is very slowpaced and the crappy AI in the American version ruins the atmosphere of the game. Unless you can find and play the PAL version, this shouldn't be your first choice as it is pretty expensive.
Zone of the Enders 1 is pretty bad. The main character sucks and the gameplay ranges from "pretty good" to "god awful". Second game is great though, but good luck finding it for a good price.
I wouldn't call Nocturne part of a holy trinity. I have it and i couldn't really get into it, i found it to be pretty shallow and difficult to find my way in.
Also i found ZoE 1 to be a fine game. Not as good as the second, but the gameplay god awful? It's pretty much the exact same gameplay as the second. The graphics weren't as good and the main character not as cool. But the story was pretty neat, and fairly dark. Also you wont clue into the cool factor of meeting him in the second game while he's piloting the Vic Viper, and being a far more bad ass character as an adult.
If you want to get some horror games then check out Fatal Frame and Silent Hill. I'm only just getting started on Fatal Frame, but Silent Hill is fantastic. 1-3 are all great, 4 not so much. Make sure to find the GREATEST HITS Silent Hill 2 though. It adds an extra scenario and joke ending. Also don't play SH3 if you can't find SH1, it continues directly from that game. 2 is standalone.
As for Fatal Frame I think it just got a reprint from GameQuest Direct so now is the chance to strike. If you check Amazon they still sell FF2 on Xbox for like $150+, but it got reprinted as well along with the 3 PS2 games, so I think people haven't realized yet.
If you decide to get the PS2 fit to play imports and you know you can run European games, check out Siren 2. Siren 1 was released in the US but 2 wasn't. 1 is REALLY hard though. It's known as pretty much the hardest survival horror game ever. You can give it a shot as it's like $10 used, but it's damn hard.
In my mind, Metal Gear Solid 2 is the game that defines the Playstation 2. This game blows my mind everytime.
Why does MGS2 still look so good? I would rather look at MGS2 then MGS3 or MGS4.

60 fps, for one thing.

Hm, I think all the games I would've suggested have been mentioned.
ZOE I thought was terrible, but you should still play it before the second one.
And if you do go for the Suikoden games, look into getting I and II. Especially II. It's worth the steep prices on ebay.
I had both an Xbox and PS2, and really any game that was released for both, it was a no-brainer that I'd get it for the Xbox... if for no other reason than it had a hard drive. Sony learned its lesson for the PS3, and somehow Microsoft forgot the lesson.
Anyhow, my game recommendation for your PS2 collection would be Second Sight. Fantastic game.
Lots of good suggestions here, so rather than repeat what people have said, I'll add something new.
If you're okay with significant amounts of lolJapan wackiness and canned Anime stereotypes, and want some good JRPGs that spend a significant amount of time on character developments, and like this music:
then there's a lot of fun to be had in the two Ar Tonelico games for you.
Seriously, the music in these games is amazing, which is no suprise given that the director of both games is also their composer. These games' soundtracks were grossly expensive and worth it, and, well, I quit World of Warcraft to play the first one, so at least I really enjoyed the games, too :P

Any Shin Megami Tensei game is a great RPG. So, Nocturne, Digital Devil Saga, Persona 3, Persona 4, any one is a good choice.
The Jak and Daxter games are all great.
And if you like the genre, Devil May Cry 3 special edition is an amazing game.
Persona 3 and 4 are some of the best RPGs around.
Let me tell you about Demon's Souls....
I have another question too. Are there any games that are still played online on the PS2? I just learned that up your arsenal has online multiplayer. Do people still play that?
Ha!
no :P

Go find a copy of ICO.
Then play it.
Then come back to thank me.
Then find a copy of SOTC.

Resident Evil 4
Makai Kingdom
You mention PS2 games, I tell you...Castlevania Symphony of the Night.
How could you recommend Makai Kingdom and not Disgaea 1 and 2, dood?
Also, God Hand.
Also, basically any RPG with NIS on the case. Especially the Atelier Iris games and Mana Khemia.
disgaea 1/2/phantom brave
persona 3/4
SMT nocturne/dds1/dds2
ico/shadow of the colossus
dark cloud 2
suikoden 3/5

Devil May Cry 1 and 3
Fatal Frame 2
Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction
Bully

Beyond Good & Evil
that list has Suikoden 3 on it.
Clearly that list is the amalgamation of lies and deceit.
God of War 1 & 2
Metal Gear Solid 1,2, & 3
Castlevania Symphony of the Night
Einhander - (If you can find it!!)
Shadow of the Colossus
ICO
Devil May Cry Series
Resident Evil 4

Well, if its not grindy, then it sure as hell is repetitive.
Its pretty simple, but its a fun mech game.
Suikoden 3 wasnt that bad. I enjoyed it. It is much better than Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter or Star Ocean.
Other stuff to look into would be Dark Cloud 1&2 and Summoner 1&2.
GOD HAND
GOD HAND!
God Hand
Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne
