I've been messing around with the idea of shoving a HD 4850 in to my home theatre pc. It does me well at the moment for playing HD content but there are a couple of pc games I'd like to play and I've got a little bit of spare cash I can put in to it.
I've tested putting the HD 4850 physically in to the case and there's enough space without it running too hot. HOWEVER the PSU I have in there at present is this one:
Whilst I managed to run my friends 4850 in the case for a couple of days I don't think I'd trust that PSU to be up to the task indefinitely. My problem is a full size atx psu will not fit in to the case, they're 6" deep and it just flat out would not fit (I've tried the one from my desktop upstairs).
Which is still, as far as I can see, a bit of a budget one. I've no objections to spending a bit more cash if there's anything available, or should I just give up my dream of having a small compact HTPC that can play games?
::edit:: I'm pretty settled on the 4850 for now as it provides 7.1pcm output via HDMI. That is pretty much essential to me.
In any case, if you can't find a PSU, consider getting an HD5670 (Slightly lower performance than the 4850) or the HD5750, which should be equal or a little better than the 4850, but both cards consume less power than the 4850 (61W & 89W vs. 110W).
Thanks for the advice! Just this morning ordered the 500w supply (it's a bit crap but best matx I could find) and the HD5750. Should all get here Thursday, looking forward to being able to game on my PC again, I haven't had a pc capable of it since Quake 1 era!
