I am soon going to aquire a Wii and already have a 360. My current tv area setup will make fitting them both horizontally a problem. If i put them side by side vertical style they will fit but I have this mental block / fear when it comes to wanting to do that for some reason. I thought I remembered hearing the 360 screwed up game discs if used vertically but I dunno...
Am I just being a chode and should move the damn thing vertical already or is there a valid concern of damage?

I think what you're remembering is that the 360 scratches discs when you transition from horizontal to vertical (or vice versa) while it's on and accessing a disc.
As long as you don't plan to attempt this transition while the system is on and playing a game you should be fine.
360 only screws up discs if the system gets tilted while the disc is spinning. I had my brand new Gears of War ruined this way by my bratty nephew-in-law (pushed the system over). My buddy's cousin got a 360, and his fell over while it was running and unfortunately for him, the whole system is borked now. So if you want it vertical, make absoulutely sure it NEVER GETS TOUCHED :S
Thanks for the clarification. I DO have a 2 year old daughter so maybe I need to rethink things lol...
Thanks again.

Definetly horrizontal. I'm afraid if I look at my 360 funny it'll start DRE'ing. I accidently kicked over my Wii while it was on and I was setting up my new furniture. Wii sports is incredibly scratched up now, but it still works.

The Wii isn't a huge issue, you can place that vertically and not worry too much about it. With it's vertical stand, it's pretty stable.
The 360, not so much. I wouldn't risk mine being vertical. Way too much "bad stuff" can happen.
To be honest I don't trust putting any console verticle ever. CD drives were never made to sit verticle. I've seen too many bad drives/mesed up games from people who stand their consoles up. So I refuse to do it.
Or... y'know... learn elementary school physics...
I understand physics, the question was about the 360's / wii's hardware getting in the way somehow of making it viable.

Perhaps the console manufacturers made their CD drives to sit verticle?

Fact a lot of people miss: The Wii even comes with a small, translucent plastic circle that you place underneath the gray console stand as a foot to give it extra support.
Mine is behind glass in my entertainment center with little room to fall anyway, but I still put the extra-wide foot on the stand. Better safe than sorry!

if nintendo say I can put my Wii vertically, then I can put my Wii vertically. It won't break

Plus, there's just something awkward about having a tray-loaded disc drive standing vertical. I've never been a fan of removing/inserting discs on vertical trays.
The self-loader on the Wii is a little better, but I still prefer horizontal.

Oops, yah, I didn't mention the clear foot. Use it, it makes it that much more stable.

That was not my point. My point is that it takes more power and wear on a CD drive to spin the disc vertical than it does when you lay it horizontal. Because of this you get into the drive wearing out early or the disc getting off balance and wobbling in the drive. I’ve not seen that happen when you lay a console flat.
Sorry but I'd rather be safe than sorry on that one.
I don't have much of value to add here, but I have never let that stop me from posting in the past.
My Wii does not look right when it is horizontal, it would have to sit on top of my 360 for that and the 360 does not play very nice with other things being stacked on it due it its shape. My 360 fits nicely as long as it is on top of the stack. I would be nervous like others here if I had my 360 vertical. The base is not very wide, and it is a tall/wide console. Also the HDD being on the top when vertical makes it topheavy. This is fine if it will be snug or his safely behind glass in a stable entertainment center.
The Wii just looks somewhat iconic in it's vertical stand. Having it stand vertically at an angle is such a simple gimmick, but it has become the defining visual of the system. Horizontal it just looks like I pulled out one of my IDE DVD drives and tossed it in my entertainment center.
There are a bunch of good looking 360 faceplates for horizontal but not so many for vertical. Take comfort in that when you are trying to lay the thing flat.
Woah you can sit the Wii horizontal? I did not know that haha.
It just looks funny :P They built the case for vertical standing because they figured it would be a more popular option, as far as I can tell.
Also, due to the design, it looks like fifty times cooler, and less like a pure kids' toys like Das Handleboxen did.
Does anyone know if Sony took survey results from their Japanese consumers regarding entertainment center space and decided on the vertical stand/setup based on that?
I feel like that's not something they'd come up with on their own.
I seem to remember hearing about PS2s having problems if put vertical, or if you switch from keeping it usually horizontal to usually vertical. Or something. Then again, PS2 hardware had a lot of problems.

I think it was something that was fixed after the first wave or two.
My Wii makes this annoying clicking noise when it's vertical, but I see no damage to any of the discs.
Time to put it flat down?
My friend's was doing this, he sent it in and got it back within a week.
No charge?
Of course not. Nintendo has something like a 15-month warranty on those things and they're really good about honoring them. They even send you a prepaid shipping label to use.

so thats what it is! i found that in my room the other day and i didnt have a clue what it was.
maybe i should read my Wii instructions sometime...
ive had my launch ps2 vertical for years and only recently ive had to place it horizontal ... no idea why i wanted to share that.
The Wii is the only console I've played vertically, and this is only because of space issues. It's very stable, and is actually kinda neat-looking. I guess it was pretty much designed to be vertical.
My Wii chills horizontally. It makes it look retarded, but I don't mind.

I would never run any optical disc drive vertical, personally.
Other than that... the Wii has heat problems when run horizontally, so if you are going to do that, find a way to set it up so that plenty of air passes underneath the system.

Also: Only Red Steel clicks. Also, the game freezes. Note: This is the only game these things happen with. Disc is nigh impeccable as I take good care of my disk.
And to think, the whole "Vertical" revolution came about when old PS1's started breaking down and one of the only fixes was to put the dang thing on its side (or in extreme cases, upside down).
Anyways, Wii up, 360 down for me. The 360 scares the shit out of me with all the reports of people breathing on it and suddenly getting mutilated discs and DRE's. Plus it really doesn't seem all that stable, whereas the Wii has both the stand and plastic circle addition, giving it a hefty footprint. Also never liked loading discs into a vertical tray. About 1 in 50 times I'll be off by a hair or something and end up scraping the thing on the tray.

My 360 and Wii are vertical too. 360 has died once, but I don't really attribute it's position to that.

Not really. It also fits when it's horizontal.
However, vertical is still better than horizontal. :P
Oh shit, you're right. The way I was thinking would have put it upside down.
My mistake
