The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
Paranoia is always the best security policy. But Kyle Pulver is a cool guy. If his games were cryptographic keys, I would sign them.
But can you trust me?
Edit: It's made with Game Maker (which hates Wine, so I can't play it right now). If you're running a virus scanner under a limited privilege account and make regular backups (as you should be!), you'll have nothing to fear.
Definitely fun platforming to be had here, I'd suggest people give it a shot.
Impressions in spoiler:
I enjoy games like this that are basically made for gamers in that they transform what we think of as "traditional game mechanics". Oh, there's the endpoint there, oh wait, it's fake and there's a terrible maze of deadly "gems" there instead. It's basically meta-game design. I really don't think people who don't consider themselves "gamers" would understand exactly what this game is going for. Hopefully that doesn't come off as pretentious.
I really enjoyed the presentation (I admit I'm a shameless nerd for retro graphics), and the music was pretty phenomenal too. The ending was kind of weak but I see what the designers were going for.
I liked the inversion of spikes and gems, had to stop myself from instinctively jumping into them. I don't see any super deep message about trust since you just have to not do what the guy tells you. And I guess I'm chasing after myself at the end or something?
Is it a screamer? Is it like UncleSporky's Don't Eat the Mushroom?
I didn't intend for it to be a screamer, just a mushroom induced freakout.
Anyway this is pretty typical for games of this type posted at this forum, the guy who posts it is all cryptic which turns out to be completely unwarranted. It's not a bad little game but it's just mechanics that have been done before (both gameplay and story).
It's like Karoshi or Portal without the attempt at humor, and its ending is a letdown as usual - people get these decent ideas and don't come up with a good way to end them. Story reminded me of 1213 without the quality and actual ending.
If the theme of the game is trust, then I think it failed.
Making it so you have to do the exact opposite of what the narrator tells you to do doesn't really say anything about trust. It's just a puzzly misdirect, and one that I think has been pulled off better in other weird indie games like Mondo Medicals.
I mean, it's not a bad game, I just think it's not this wonderfully mysterious artsy thing like it's selling itself as. The game is at its best when the visuals of the map hint towards the solution, but also obscure it, like the small level where the map is flipped so what you're looking at is actually a mirror image of what you really have to deal with. Other levels just become guess-work and the one I called it quits at was the gem-dodging bit that felt a bit too similar to the platformers the game is deconstructing.
So yeah. Like UncleSporky said, it's not bad, it's just not anything new.
That's the last level anyway, and you're not missing much. Here is a spoiler of the ending:
After you beat Deceit, you are at the left side of a quiet level, and as you go to the right you hear the sound of somebody using the "exit light." It turns out you are above the place where you started the game and presumably following yourself back in time or something(?). You jump off and go into the light and it's black screen with credits.

So, downloaded it, played for a bit, then deleted it almost immediately when I saw it was another one of those "GAME AS ART" games that got some kind of message combined with utterly awful gameplay.

But you're free to do as you please.

Are you trying to be artsy or thoughtful or some shit?
People post virus and spyware shit all the time on these sort of things, we aren't being devoid of trust, we just aren't being fucking stupid.

You can look at what I've said. And then you can check for yourself.

Or is he?
This is just like that time an old bald guy kidnapped me when I was a kid and masturbated while I had to navigate a confusing maze.

Good graphics and music though.
Tried that, still failed at least 3 more times before quitting
hahaha. Jesus Christ.
Anyway, I am downloading this game now. I'm really surprised I hadn't heard of it until now!
This isn't gonna work on my G5, is it?

It's a fun little platforming game. It'll take you less than 20 minutes to beat.
That's it, that's all.
