Rules-light game systems

Dang, I don't like the term "rules-light", but it's better than things like "pick up and play". Since when has an RPG system been pick up and play, anyway?

Ahem.

Basically, I was wondering if anyone had recommendations- just trying to expand my knowledge for the time I actually get to GM something again.

I've tried FATE (Fudge), The Window (loudly washing my hands of the author, mind you), Tr-Stat dX (which manages to qualify as rules-light by my book)... but not really enough to understand them or get a fair view of their strengths and weaknesses.

Actually, forget everything that I just said: I'd happily hear you fellas recommend lesser-known rules-heavy systems: the only proviso being that you've had experience enough with them to know how they play (although who am I to say that- I keep recommending GURPS on its reputation and sourcebooks alone, despite the fact I've only played two games of it in my life).

I just like reading about the settings. Like, a lot.

...sorry.

In fact: made a system yourself? No one knows about it yet because you've only just started the site? I'll even look into that, too :)

True20 - it's the boiled-down essence of the d20 system. They retained most of the good stuff, but got rid of approximately 3/4th of the crunch.

If you want something for really boiled-down d20, try Microlite d20 (it's online, for free. Fairly decent as well - check out the recent versions, they're about two/three pages.)

FATE and FUDGE are decent, as has been mentioned. I'm not much of a fan of rules-light systems, so there's not much more I can add. Good luck!

Dice Chucker and Quique, both produced by Oversoul games.

Dice Chucker is the one that I prefer. Less than 30 pages of free downloadable rulebook, and it plays really cleanly.

I have less experience with Quique, but it's really simple to learn.

Battlestations (you'll find it in the board game section) is a rules-lite RPG... but definitely not pick up and play, whoever is going to be DMing it really needs to read through the rules before starting.

    Woo, quick responses! Thanks all!

Risus always reminded me of Paranoia, if only for its easy going self-parodying ways... but not sure if I could get anyone to go with it :(

I'll definitely explore that earlier thread (yes, clearly I'm blind) and search around for Battlestations et al.

As for Microlite D20, I'd never heard of that one, but it looks like a pocket travel incarnation of D20  Hence it's quite probably awesome :P
