The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
In response to the bullshit spammer I just canned, let's post links to free and open source software that will convert video files betwixt different formats.
Only rules:
Must not be any kind of shareware, or regular paid software.
Must not violate any obvious laws.
Must obviously not contain any kind of virus or spyware.
List the OS (or OSes) it is available for, which formats it can read and which it can export to.
Thanks!

Windows only. Still in development, with regular support. Freeware, but it will open a pop-up asking for a donation after every use.
Don't let the name throw you. It will convert most types to most other types, with various and sundry options for quality and the like. I mostly use it for .mkvs with softsubs to .avis with hardsubs, and it will retain graphical softsubs perfectly. The version I have doesn't always do well with multiple language tracks in .mkvs or .oggs, but I haven't updated in a while. Simple GUI, though setting up batches can be some work since there's no drag and drop for multiple files.
Windows, Mac OS, Linux. Freeware, but hasn't been updated in a while.
As above, converts most types into .mkvs or .mp4. I've had less success with it, which is why I still prefer xvid4psp. I have trouble getting it to handle softsubs and multiple languages properly, but I'm sure I'm doing something wrong. One thing it does have is a preview function that will let you sample a short clip so you can check the quality and settings before you commit to a long conversion or batch conversion.
Windows. I checked the author's homepage and it looks like they're charging for the new version. I have 2.0 and 3.1 and they're both 100% freeware, so whatever.
This is for really quick and dirty jobs. I use it almost exclusively for converting .flvs (from youtube or google video) into .mp3s so I can listen to lectures on my mp3 player, or quickly converting videos from my camera so I can slap them onto youtube. I wouldn't use it for anything else, and the options are pretty limited.
