Not to notify me a game I reserved was in, but to harass me about completing a survey about the Gamestop I recently visited.
What the fuck, Gamestop? I want you to call and let me know a game is in (although if I reserved it, I am anticipating it, meaning I don't even need the call), not for you to bother me while I'm working with stupid shit about your business.

This is why I don't give stores my phone number. give a fake one.

I am never going back there, damn their preorder bonuses.
Preorder insurance to ensure that you receive your preorder?
Isn't that what the fucking money I gave you earlier was supposed to do? Isn't that the whole point of a preorder? To ensure that I get the game on release day because I've already given you money for it?

I understand that it's completely legal, but what's the point of preordering if I have to pay extra, too? Not only am I letting go of at least $5.00 early, but now that $5.00 doesn't mean I have a copy of the game waiting for me on release day, it just means I'll have a copy of the game waiting for eventually.
That's bullshit.
A preorder is supposed to mean that I have a copy waiting for me on release day.
They'd may as well ask if you'd like punching insurance to make sure that none of the employees punch you while you're picking up your sometime in the vague future reservation, too.

Also, a preorder simply denotes that you get a system before the people who doo not preorder. It does not insure you get one upon release.

You don't pay any extra for preordering, that 5 bucks (or however much you put on the reserve) goes towards the prices. Always have, always will.
And I'll tell you from personal experience, it's absolutely not our fault in the rare occurance that we don't have enough copies for reserve customers. It's UPS/FedEx, and that's the honest-to-God truth.
The reason why we don't sell copies to non-preorders within the initial 48 hour period, is so that a preorder copy doesn't get sold to a non-reserve customer. That, and inventory reasons, but those are annoying to even think about, much less post about on my day off. :P

k, so define how asking people to take advantage of a service they legally offer is immoral?

As far as I'm concerned, nobody should preorder. The way things stand, gamers are doing Gamestop's market research for them. Why is it so hard to find copies of Atlus games? Because Gamestop only orders (number preordered + 1) copies for every one of their stores.
It's not so much about getting the revenue into Gamestop's hands as quickly as possible, as you said in your blog entry--although that's certainly a factor--it's about Gamestop using the preorder system to minimize lost revenue on unsold new games. Each copy of a new game costs Gamestop $40 or more, and sells for $50--for every copy of a new game that the store doesn't sell, they have to make up a $40 loss. In other words, they have to come up with the equivalent of four new game sales for every piece of idle inventory.
Some people say they're fine with the preordering system, because they don't mind keeping Gamestop in business, but I say fuck that fucking nonsense. It's not my responsibility to do Gamestop's market research. It's not acceptable for Gamestop managers to call me to let me know about "great trade-in deals!" I shouldn't be required to put money down on a piece of entertainment before it's been given to any critics to review (the equivalent of paying for a movie ticket before even the advance screenings have played, or putting down money on a car before you even test drive it). And it's absolutely inexcusable for the kind of nonsense to go on that syndalis' blog entry referenced--a retail sales employee badgering a customer and/or refusing to make a sale because he didn't subscribe to the preorder system?! It's all complete bullshit.
In a perfect world, I'd be able to convince everyone in the world that we should stop supporting this system. If everyone stops preordering, the system fails, and they have to invent a new one. The new system might suck, but I'd be willing to take a chance on it, because this system fucking sucks.
But that won't happen, because people will keep preordering. It's a tragedy of the commons.

Being moral isn't one and the same with following the law. For example, if you see some bastard beat his five year daughter, you can get in trouble for kicking his ass instead of contacting authorities. But you should totally do it anyways.
Wait, why wouldn't they sell an non-preordered, readily available copy of the game to that kid? There has to be more to that story.
Because store managers and district managers ride their employees like fucking donkeys to get their preorder numbers as high as possible? If you haven't worked at a Gamestop or EB, you can't really appreciate the workplace atmosphere.
Personally, I have no trouble believing that this register monkey thought he was being a true Gamestop pimp, teaching this random scrub a lesson by denying him a purchase because he dared to not preorder a game like Gears of War.
But seriously, if there were no preorder systems available, places like Atlus, and Nippon Ichi, would have an even tougher time. Preorders are a way for a company to see what demand is like for their product in certain portions of the nation. The more preorders, the more follow-up shipments, special events, preorder bonuses, and things of that sort.
Also, for everyone that absolutely despises Gamestop/EBGames, don't shop there anymore. Seriously, don't. The last thing the staff (at least, a GOOD staff) at your local EBStop needs, is random walk-in customers bellyaching about a service the store provides. Our jobs will be alot easier without it.

Man, what? The whole thread is about why what they're doing are being dicks, and you keep on saying "BUT IT'S LEGAL!" I was trying to illustrate why legality has little to do with what's moral, nothing more.

At some point, They get insane with the pre-ordering. I really think alot of the ordering people just shouldn't be doing that job. By the time they reach that point in management, they aren't connected with the end user.
At that point they bring in alot of crappy games that people don't really want.
