PAX Gays?

WhirlspellWhirlspell Registered User regular
edited February 2010 in PAX Archive
This is a slightly awkward thread to start, since it may very well result in me making absolutely ZERO friends at PAX East this year, but I figured I'd give it a shot, anyways.

Penny Arcade has a history of being super awesome about gays, example: Giving GayGamer.net their own panel the last couple of years (and an EXCELLENT panel it is!). At PAX Prime 09 (my first PAX), I attended that panel expecting to be the only person in the room, but there were dozens of us! Nerdy gamer gays! I couldn't believe my eyes.
Unfortunately, I wasn't on the forums or anything back then, so I didn't really have any way of chatting with anyone.

So this thread is my humble attempt to give us gay PAXers a place to gather so that maybe we can meet up in Boston, or even grab some drinks together (or 10 or 15 at the Pokecrawl).

I'm by no way saying that I only socialize with fellow gays - far from it! It's just that I'm from Wichita, KS (not the gayest place on the map) and I honestly don't know a single other gay person who plays video games.

Gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transgenders and queers! Hit me up :) I'm NOT using PAX or these forums as a dating service (I have a partner, thank you), but I'd love to see some people actually reply to this. If no one does, then I guess I won't be too surprised, but I waned to try. :P

Hey, Im not Gay, but my father is Transgendered, so I grew up feeling the alienation that he went through, being called a fag every day because of it.

If you want to hang out sometime while we're all in boston, I'm always up for a drink.

Though not gay myself, I empathize with your situation! I get the feeling that PAX East will be no different than PAX Prime in terms of its inclusive nature: we gamers, geeks, and knowledge-seekers tend to be less butthead-like in our viewpoints, and thus I would wager that PAX held anywhere will be more inclusive and welcoming than most other places in their everyday shuffle.

Fear not, my friend! =) Also, our Poke Team is going to kick butt! =)

I understand what you are trying to say, but you forgot to include straight persons like myself.
Are we not welcome? I like hanging out with fun and interesting people and I am pretty sure we are all people.

Also, not only gay gamers attended the GayGamer.net panel. I was lucky enough to run into the guys while I was waiting in line for God of War 3. I told them how much I appreciate what they are doing for the community and they posed for a picture for me. 8-)

I'm not gay but my mother and uncle are. I don't know if gaygamer.net is going to have a panel this year but I saw the spot for it on last year's schedule and thought it'd be cool to check out. Like ZeroHourHero said, I'm up for a drink or whatever too as ZeroHourHero has offered.

From what I sense is that most people were pretty open minded here and pretty friendly. So I hope you making a post like this doesn't make you feel alienated.

Making this thread was absolutely not because I was feeling alienated or anything like that at all.

I didn't mean to send any wrong signals - I'm very aware that PA folk are some of the finest out there, and that PAX is generally a very inclusive and welcoming environment.

And Mentok- Of course straights are welcome, if there's any sort of meetup ^_^ I'm not excluding anyone at all. It's just that sometimes with sexuality, the only way to find out who else is out there is to ask, plain and clear, "Ahoy out there! Who's gay?" Because generally speaking, gaming culture is pretty homophobic (as I said, I know PA folk mostly aren't this way).

Keep in mind that GayGamer.net didn't get their own panel because they are gay. They got a panel because they have interesting things to talk about that are relevant to games and the gaming community. ;) PA is very non-biased and very fair. (At least, that's what I would assume)

You've definitely come to the right place to meet gamers of every color and persuasion, and this is not the first thread of this type to pop up. (It's not awkward!) I remember a very similar one appearing just before PAX2007. Pull up a chair, grab a hookah pipe and make yourself at home. Check out some of the unofficial events threads for good places to meet up with people, and/or organize your own.

I love PAX. I'm just old, not gay, was a bit worried about going to PAX the first time, but found it full of amazing people who don't judge you, who just want to hang out and have fun, and not surprisingly, several have posted in this thread. I'm up for socialising with anyone here!

I absolutely agree with this :) Sorry if I wasn't clear.

The responses to this thread have been really awesome! I'm new to these boards, so I don't know any of you (yet), or how to really go about this, but I'd love to meet up with anyone interested. Doesn't matter if you're straight, gay, bi, old, or whatever - everyone that's replies here seems pretty great. 8-)

Maybe Friday night we could grab drinks at a downtown bar? I'm normally not a fan of gay bars (they tend to be... cruisey... and gross..), but I like to check out the local scene when I'm out of town. There's a bear bar called "The Alley" that's right downtown, but I only just found that one on the GayCities.com directory. Maybe there's a better place - sound off if you know of anything or find anything!

One of my best friends goes to school in Boston, and he's gay, though not much of a gamer. Either way, I can ask him about bars in the area.

As an added note, it makes me happy to see open-minded and accepting people. Hopefully the rest of the world will learn eventually

    EDIT:
This is what he said: (let me know if you want me to ask him any other questions)

I don't really know any gay bars in Boston, there are some gay clubs, but I don't think that's what you're looking for.

Boylston St. has a lot of bars on it. There are like 4 right next to each other. Here are a few that are practically across the street from Hynes.
    -PourHouse
    -Whiskeys
    -Lir
-Cactus Club (get a frozen margarita)

Just out of curiosity, why did you expect the thread to get shut down instantly?
I know many gamers on Live or PSN yell "gay" or "fag" all the time, but the forums here have always seemed pretty all-inclusive to me.

Sadly I've come to expect most forums to lock/delete any thread that mentions anything GLBT. I have seen this happen on almost every forum I have been a part of (excluding GLBT themed sites).

Looking at most of the posts in this thread it seems this forum may be different, which is an awesome thing. :^:

Eh were laid back here and moe is a cool admin.

Also all the bars that zezspecs Lists look like they are in walking distance if not directly in front of the Convention center. I would love to attend some kind of gathering and having the bars very close is a big deal because most people are not in a walking/taxi mood after pax.

So i definitely think if OP sets something up you could count me in. Also it would be advantageous to contact the bar or place you hope to gather at because a number of the bars have private parties held during the convention.

zezspecs - Any of those bars in front of the convention center would be perfect! Would anyone be up for Friday night, before the Frontalot concert starts (he probably won't play until midnightish), around 10?

I'd love to meet all of you.

Madnessofcrowds - My BF is a non-gamer, as well, but I'm working on turning him into one :) Hopefully this time next year we'll planning a trip to PAX E. together. I'm traveling to Boston with a friend, but he's not 21 yet so I'll be on my own out at the bars, etc.

Friday night would be cool potentially for me. I'm still figuring out my transportation as far as getting back to Providence on the train/bus, but would be fun to at least get a beer or something. (Where'd you find out when different concerts are??? :-) )

My boyfriend likes games, but we mostly just have very different taste. He's addicted to his Ipod Touch and plays pretty much all casual games - Tetris, Tap Tap Revenge, pretty simple-type stuff. On console, the only game he ever got really into was Mario Kart on Wii.

I like casual games, but not into racing games at all, and big into adventure games/RPG/action-adventure/more story-based type stuff on Xbox 360/PC/DS. At any rate, he's not into games enough to spend money to go to this kind of event - I am working, like you, on finding gaming middle ground though. :-)

Not that it's a necessity, but there are plenty of gay bars near there, too, if you want to go that route.

I've only been to one, Machine/Ramrod, but that's just a half-mile away (1254 Boylston) - that looks like the closest one.

Perhaps we can bump the time to 9 or 9:30? And definitely advertise it as a GLBTF meetup :) It would be even better if there was a bar close by (one of those that are across the street) that was 18+ to enter, just in case anyone isn't 21 yet that'd like to join.

If we get these details (time, location) nailed down, where should we advertise the meetup? I know there's an unofficial PAX event calendar. Is that the best place?

I think 9 or 9:30 is a great idea. Gives everyone a chance to get to know each other, and then those who want to head out to a dance club that night (or later in the weekend) can do so, and others who want to just hang at the con can do that instead.

It'd be fun if we could have a GLBTF gaming session at some point during the convention.

Ok just got off the phone with the bars zezspecs listed and here is what i found out.

-PourHouse After 8pm becomes 21+ ONLY

-Whiskeys after 10pm becomes 21+ ONLY

-Lir is 21+ AT ALL TIMES

-Cactus Club BAR is 21+ AT ALL TIMES

-Cactus Club Restaurant is all ages at all time.

So for the most part these places will be 21+ at the times we are looking forward to. Also i did not ask about special event during the dates of PAX because they would probably not know. I do know Lir on the Saturday the 27th has an event going on starting at 8pm. So if anyone wants to set up something firm go right ahead.

Also i would suggest changing the thread title to "GLBT friendly meetup" or something like that. Pax gays seems a bit blunt now that the thread has progressed this far. Any way i am down for whatever.

Chupaniubre - Thanks for getting that info!

This thread has been awesome. How do I go about changing the title of the thread? If it sounds good to everyone else, I think we should set a firm time for 9pm on Friday night, at one of the bars across the street from the Hynes. Is there a poll function we could add? Or I could just use an external site to take a quick poll.

I'm also down for a GLBTF gaming session, perhaps in the freeplay room? Or maybe we can all play a board game together for a bit? Catan? Carcasonne? Doesn't matter to me.

You can probably either ask an admin to change the title of this thread, or to lock it and start a new one with the title you want. I suggest "GLBT and friends meetup".

I agree we should just pick a bar near the convention center and meet up there at 9pm.

All of the bars listed are, in fact, directly across the street from Hynes.

    They are also pretty small.

Another thing to remember: Massachusetts was the first state to legalize gay marriage, so we're all friendly in Boston. Actually, Cabridge was the first city to do so. I was living there at the time, and was at the court house that night to watch the festivities. It was nuts.
