If you've ever played Fluxx, this should all sound very similar.
Here in Nanofictionary, each player is trying to create a tiny story that contains four devices: a Setting, a Problem, a Character (at least one), and a Resolution. You build up a set of these and create a story from them, which we'll all judge on which is the best. There's also these things called Action cards which allow you to extra stuff. You know the drill.
In the Writing Phase, everyone collects four types of plot devices.
In the Storytelling Phase, everyone takes turns telling short stories from their cards.
In the Awards Phase, we give out points and, well, awards. You get bonus points for having more cards in your story.
We need 3-6 players, and we need non-players who are called Jurors and just want to read the very short stories and award points to whichever they think is the best.
=====================
So here are the rules.
The Writing Phase
Each player draws a card and then does just one of these three options:
- Add a plot device (Character, Setting, Problem, or Resolution) to the story,
- Use an Action card and then discard it,
- Discard as many cards as you wish, and then draw back to five.
Whenever you perform one of these actions, type it up in orange (like,I play this Action Card: Uncrumple), so I can scan the thread and see it easily. I'll put everyone's stuff up in the second post, including the discard pile, you can refer to it there.
When you play a Plot Device, play it face-up - unless you're playing a Resolution, which must remain secret to everyone but you. Play this card face-down (and also PM me what the card is!)
You can have as many characters as you want, but you can only have one Problem, one Setting, and one Resolution. If you play a new one, you have to discard the existing Problem, Setting, or Resolution that you own (so if you have a Problem and you play a new Problem, you get rid of the old Problem).
We've got four types of Action cards, here's what they do:
- Complication: Add a second Setting, Problem, or Resolution to your story, and then draw one card.
- Brainstorm: All active players draw a card, then give a card of their choice to you. You also draw an extra card for each inactive player. Then you play one card, and discard down to 5 cards.
- Plagiarize: Steal a plot device from another player's story, replacing it with a card from your hand that is of the same type (if it's a Resolution, they don't get to see it, which is fun - but you still need to PM me and tell me what you gave them)
- Uncrumple: Take any card from the discard pile, add it to your hand, and then play a card.
Instead of playing a card on your turn, you can discard a card. If you do, discard as many additional cards as you wish, then draw back up to five cards.
===================
During the Writing Phase, we all work on our stories at the same time. You take your one turn at the same time, and when we're done, we go on to the next together. Your turn begins with all players adding a card to their hands, and then each may perform their action for that turn whenever they are ready. When you're done, say Done in red.
When putting cards down, feel free to look for a certain genre, and to aim for cards that fit. Murder-mystery, sci-fi, fantasy. Keep it in theme, it's all really cool.
At any time, if you've got at least one of each of the four plot devices (Character, Setting, Problem, and Resolution), and you like the ones you have, you can declare your story to be complete by posting My story is complete in lime. When you do, take the highest remaining Completion Bonus card from the pile (there's a number of cards equal to the number of players. If we've got six players, we have six Completion Bonus cards. If you finished first, you take the 6-card. If you finish second, you take the 5-card. The last player takes the 1-card. Like a countdown.) This indicates how many bonus points you get. You're now out of the game until the next phase - prepare your best storytelling voice, and maybe go get some pictures to accompany it, that'd be funny. But here's what you do:
- Discard your entire hand.
- Your story is now locked in, and nobody can mess with it through any sort of card or rule.
When there's only one person left trying to finish their story, the last person gets one more turn to finish. If that player doesn't have enough cards to tell a story, they can't get no prizes during the Awards Phase, and have shamed us all.
Since we're all playing in this phase at the same time, it's first come first serve. If two people post to do the same thing, whoever posted first gets it.
The discard pile will be reshuffled if necessary.
==============
The Storytelling Phase
Jurors, it's your time to shine.
Take turns telling your stories in descending order: Whoever got the highest numbered Completion Bonus card tells their story first, then go down until you get to whoever got the 1-card. If at any time you decide you don't want to use any extra cards in your story that you've put down, you can discard them, so long as you still have one of each of the four plot devices. When you're done, say The End or something like that.
You can elaborate and embellish the outline presented on your cards, but remember that the cards form the core of your story. Don't create any major characters who aren't on your cards. And keep the story short but awesome - imagine if you were writing it down on the back of a large envelope. Keep it that length.
You can change genders of characters if, for example, a card suggests a girl and you want it to be a boy. Or if a card suggests a group and you want it to be just one person, or vice versa.
Something else, you can condense more than one Character card into the same person - The evil twin is also the inner city schoolgirl. A character can also turn into a problem: the millionaire is the one who's got the gun, for example.
I'll PM each player their Resolution card if they don't know what it is. Otherwise, just go on ahead.
====================
The Awards Phase
Each player now gets a Grand Prize card, a Runner-up card, and a number of Honorable Mentions equal to the number of players.
Next, every player will give someone else an award card, face down. Whoever's story you thought was the best, give them the Grand Prize card. Give the Runner-up card to whoever had the second best story, you think. Everyone else gets an Honorable Mention. Keep what you give a secret, but PM me and say who gets what from you. You can't give any awards to yourself, nor can you give a single player more than one award.
Jurors, remember those guys? They can give a Juror Vote, which is worth two points. Jurors, PM me who you want to give your two points to - you can only pick one person, you can't split the points up.
So then I reveal what everybody got. Honorable Mentions are not worth any points. You get:
- 1 point for each card in your story,
- 1 point for each Runner-Up card you got,
- 2 points for each Juror Vote you got,
- 3 points for each Grand Prize you received,
- whatever number is on your completion bonus card.

Also, anyone wishing to sign up as a Juror, do so as well! Just be all like, Man, I want to be a Juror.
Im very interested.
Thank you, players, and Jurors!
Okay, sending out hands now. I'm also sending everyone's first draw. Remember, no turns, it's all simultaneous, so just play whenever.
After you make your post, I'll be back in later to give you your new draws, and we'll just keep on keepin' on until all but one player is ready.
If someone wishes to take my spot i would be happy to give it to them.
Any particular format rules for the Writing Phase?
This sounds fun and I haven't written fiction in a long time.
I would like to do... either.
*MEOW*
That's Darian and INeedNoSalt as Jurors.
Crimson King - no format, just what you're doing in Orange for me, if'n you please!
- SETTING: the dangerous objects factory
- CHARACTER: the assistant manager
- CHARACTER: the super-evolved sentient broccoli
Which should mean I get 2 cards back, right?
EDIT: Gandalf, was that your play for the next round? Because it is still the first round I think maybe, so you might want to "hold off" on your discards until you get your new card, it is just a "suggestion"
Leaving my move public in the interests of...well, laziness. ;-)
summeryclept you are the worst host ever who isn't me
hehe. probably.
in fact, i think that theoretical Infinite Monkeys would probably be able to replicate the plot of MGS more reliably than the works of Shakespeare.
however, i think the plot for any of the recent final fantasy games would take approximately... a million cards.
I'll go ahead and play UNCRUMPLE, in order to take SETTING: the dangerous objects factory. Then I will play that exact same card!
An evil twin in a dangerous objects factory, how can I lose!
- CHARACTER: the relentlessly inquisitive reporter

God this story practically writes itself. Millionaire Sky, by Mr. C. King.
simon it is not my fault if you are so stupid
Gettin' and givin' here, folks.
