So this sounded interesting from the OP, but I have a thing about avoiding games that refuse to tell you anything at all regarding what they're about or how to play them on the website. Any actual information anywhere?

You have actions (up to 10) that you can spend to either A) use cards or attempt storylets (sorta like quests). You have 4 attributes (Dangerous, Shadowy, Watchful, and Persuasive). Most storylets will test one quality (some will have options for testing it more for better rewards, or testing another quality for a different approach, etc).
Most of the storylets are simple "try this, pass/fail, get reward", but some are more involved, require building up a certain amount of a unique quality. The real reward, honestly, is the flavor text. Think of an MMO where you don't have to physically run around or attack things.
@Shifty - I've never seen a Primordial Shriek, sorry.
@Raiden - normally I'd agree, but a) it's free and b) you can't really screw up and c) like Delzhand said the fun is really in the journey (flavor text)...my delicious friend.
Eff Knife & Candle. When they say dangerous 25, they're not kidding. I got murdered 3 times this morning. In unrelated news, I opened up The Forgotten Quarter. Not much to do, but Hunting For Curios has a luck based option that usually rewards 10x Relics of the Fourth City, which sell for 5p each.
Light Fingers 6. Still trying to accumulate the Glim/Surface Currency to get into Wolfstack. At this point I have the money to buy them outright, but I'm hoping to get a bit more to reduce the cost. I'm looking at spending a little under half my 25e to get in right now.
Ambition: Bag a Legend 8. Training dangerous to pass a hard check.

Wow, just nailed a "almost impossible" Watchful to move my Ambition to 9!
Ugh...apparently I need to find my way into the Forgotten Quarter to continue my quest for my wife's killer! Must find a London Street Sign, or all is lost...
This thing is awesome. I'm already well-enraptured by my Sherlock Lovecraft character who has already been inflicted with a rash of nightmares from delving into secrets meant to be left undisturbed. Twitter name is Paradiso42 for those that want to add me.
A cheery gentleman
Who made this storylet?@alexiskennedy made me.
In the street, you pass a tall, cheerful man with a brisk manner, a stovepipe hat and a row of bright brass buttons down the front of his coat. He winks familiarly as you pass and spreads his hands: eight fingers.
You've seen him before. Of course you have. He was beside your bed when you woke this morning. Or were you still asleep?
Note: Your Nightmares are reaching a dangerous level.
whats the point of clicking the cheery gentleman mission if it is going to raise your nightmares?
I've decided to give this a shot. If anyone wants to add me I'm hypacia. I didn't bother with a special twitter account as I normally only use mine to stalk web comic artists and actor/directors.

That's kinda the point. The cheery gentleman doesn't unlock until you're having nightmares. Naturally, since he's part of your nightmares, seeing him when you're awake just makes it worse.

We should make a list with some easy marks for knifing and their defense strategies because that's fun.
e: Also I can counsel some nightmares but don't go overboard.

@paradiso - I have tonics to reduce nightmares and I have tonics to heal wounds...robbing drunks is a wonderful way to acquire a whole assortment of things
Does anyone have any advice on figuring out the Mysteries? Are these things that you find answers for later on in the game? Or are you just supposed to piece together tidbits of information and guess at the answer?
Fumelin and I had a conversation about the Fourth City, and I got the following information:
It's something about the silver tree. And a battle that never happened. "Blood on the troubled garments..."
Per the wiki I linked, correct answers are hard to come by, although they may provide some modest Fate. They are, for all intents and purposes, a mystery.
I need to spend some actions advancing some of my Storylets, but I keep getting distracted by interesting Opportunity cards. It's only a matter of time before I break down and start buying Fate.
whats the point of clicking the cheery gentleman mission if it is going to raise your nightmares?
I'm curious if there is a longer-term plan for this one beyond "Lol! Ur nightmares r increased!" Otherwise it seems like all it's good for is a shot of curiosity before avoiding that damn man and his shiny brass buttons like the plague.
In other news, I appear to dream a lot about drowning, dead people, and wine. This will not end well.
I've been taking every "fire dream" card I can, so long as my nightmares are manageable. I'll let you know if there's any 'conclusion' or storylets unlocked by higher Recurring Dreams.
I'm working on everything-but-dangerous, as a general strategy, and I'll probably move to dangerous after I finish everything-that-isn't-Knife-and-Candle.
Also, assaulting the drunks gives you laudanum? YESSSSS. I need laudanum. I keep dreaming about the Fire Sermon.
Also also, have you noticed that the recurring dreams give you Fate? I'm saving mine up to 50 so I can eventually complete a second Ambition, if that's possible.

Remember that hotel I was going after?
My ambition just gave me a quest where I need 500 Prisoners Honey.
Damn you! Video Game!
Got a storylet on Ladybones Road that raises my connections with the church and hell at the same time.

edit:
And I'm in as mundanesoul. Really enjoying it so far. My main stat is Watchful.
There may or may not be good general advice as well, I have not pursued it. This game is too delicious to spoil.

And wow, Shadowy at 13 unlocks "Rob a drunk" which yields interesting and varied loot.
I can't help you with Nightmares. Mine are between 7 and 8 and I can't afford to get anymore.
Any other offer I will gladly help with.
Not Nightmares.
No.
Nein.
