Does anyone else have this problem or am I just a silly goose? (Babying Electronics)

Okay, so I've owned a PSP for the last two years at least. If I remember properly I bought my first in 2007. Since then I've upgraded to a 2000 model, and last Sunday to a 3000 model. (The white version via the Assassin's Creed bundle.)

Now, is it just me or does anyone else feel like these things are going to fall apart in their hands? The screen is the biggest offender. You fart on the damn thing and it scratches. So I buy a screen protector for the thing from Amazon. Whoops, won't arrive until February 9th. In my impatience, I decided to grab a Rocketfish brand (Essentially the Best Buy in-store brand) screen protector until I get the nicer Hori model in.

I applied the screen protector, and as it usually does, it went badly the first time. A few bubbles, a speck of dust, and after a few re-applies it went on decently me enough for me to live with. Now for the last few days at work I was contemplating ripping the thing off and just keeping the thing protector-less until I got the Hori in. Tonight I did just that, and took the protector off, but soaked it in a bit of warm water to clean it up and stuck it back on.

What I did notice is that when I pulled up the protector, that the screen was scratched. Obviously not deeply but those faint hairline scratches that you can see when you hold the system at an angle. Ugh, had the thing less than a week and the screen is scratched. I want to enjoy this damn system but at the same time it's like I'm afraid to touch it lest it gets beat up.

TL;DR: So I am the only one that has a problem with over-coddling their electronics to a point where you almost don't want to use them lest they get scratched? Or am I just a silly goose?

Yes, but its inevitable. All of your game systems will get hurt.

    And then you die.

Point is, live it up while you can!

I have one noticable scratch (very small though) on my PSP screen, but that's only because I put it in my backpack without it being inside a carrying case. Point is, carrying cases are very handy. I usually take good care of my systems, but I don't ever worry about their condition.

I have a playgear pocket and it stays in there when it's not being played. Believe it or not the scratches come from when I wipe the damn screen, even though I'm using a microfiber cloth.

I tend to keep stuff in cases and in special pockets in my bag if I'm taking them somewhere for the first couple of months, but after that usually just throw them in with everything else.

Also peeling the plastic off a new screen on a phone/psp whatever is the best thing.

If you don't use something—electronics or anything—because you're worried about keeping it in pristine condition, then yes, you are an immensely silly goose. Game systems are meant to be played. If you want it in mint condition, keep it in the box and put it behind glass, then buy another one and use that one to death. I ride bareback with my iPhone, no case or nuthin', and I do have a DSi case with some screen protectors but I stopped caring about exterior case scratches the day after I bought it.

And man, I've been hearing you complain about the PSP screen for years. Shouldn't you have learned by now? :P

I just really want to love the thing, that is all. Sigh.

Kinda hard to do when I spend more time looking at the screen at an angle in the light to see if I got any recent scratches more than I actually play games on the thing.

I used to obsessively care about that sort of thing, and then I played Elite Beat Agents...

I could S-Rank Jumping Jack Flash on Diva mode or I could have a perfect shiny screen forever and ever.

    No friggin' contest.

Also I am a clumsy woman and if a scratched screen is the worst thing to ever happen to my electronics from here on out then I am blessed indeed.

That's why I dig my DS. It's built really well and I just slapped a screen protector on it. Never had to worry about it ever.

It was weird getting a PSP after having the DS. Such a big screen, so prone to get damaged...

Despite all my worry, I'v yet to buy a screen protector for it, and have been lucky enough it hasn't had any major scratches. I really need to get on that.

One month. One lonely simple month after I got my PSP, I dropped it. On concrete. Hard.

    It survived!

But it's shiny new L and R buttons were to be forever marred and chipped. Alas.

Moral of the story: Things get dinged.

I dropped my DS and PSP and both of them survived. My DS didn't do so well, as I cracked the hinge when I dropped it.

Almost anything will get those faint scratches on the surface when you look at an angle. I only consider it a problem when watching or playing something head on and it takes my focus away from what I'm doing. I stopped using a screen protector on my PSP, my DSi doesn't have one, ditto for GameBoy Micro (though I have faceplates so I'm not worried) and most of my other electronics save for my iPod Touch. I carry them around a lot, and have yet to have the problem of a noticable, and annoying scratch, and I'm sensitive about those.

I'm inclined to think you're being a silly goose.

What are you guys doing to scratch these things?
All my devices (ds, psp, laptops, iphones, ipods) have taken mad mad abuse and only my first gen macbook pro has screen problems.

In fact laptops are the only thing I can kill ( i do it often , but I travel often and hard )

My iphone goes straight in my pocket with NOTHING. And it's great.

So my Hori PSP screen protectors arrived today. I did the whole shower trick, but still the bastards were a pain to apply. After about an hour I got them on perfectly.

I put a fair amount of scratches on the protector itself during this hour, and I likely put a few new light scratches on the screen itself with the few times I wiped the thing with the little microfiber cloth, but the protector is there, and I don't care how badly it gets dinged anymore, and it'll stay there for the life of the system.

    Woot.

My DS has some scratches on the lower screen. Trauma Center, Meteos and turbulence are to blame. :(

I used to care something fierce, to the point of trying not to use the object in question. While I'm still anal about packaging damage (sticker goo, creased spines, broken manual clips...you name it) I've learned to accept that anything that's going to be used is going to show signs of that use and thus those scratches on my DS are like war wounds, man. My PSP [of three years] is still pristine funnily enough.

It's funny because I constantly have this conversation with my wife about screen protectors. I don't use them and she does. My screens phone, psp etc get scratches but nothing major, I rely on a case/micro cloth to protect them instead.

Just the other day we removed a few of her protectors and low and behold the scratches on her screens are deeper and more numerous.

I don't mention this to gloat because honestly I skipped screen protectors because of poor fit/tactile response and I had believed that her screens would benefit. But it would seem that a good case and micro fiber cloth made more of a difference in the end.

and unless you have a clean room then whatever is under the screen protector, most of which hang on by static cling, is going to stay and scratch the screens.
