Most Frequently Asked Questions
1. Can I register this __Insert Game Here__ on Steam?

Here's a list of games you can register on Steam. You can always add a non-Steam game to your Steam games list, so that people can see you playing it.

2. If I buy a game pack that already includes a game I own, can I gift that game?

No, this was a one-time thing for people who already owned Half-Life 2 and bought the Orange Box. Additional copies you own are lost forever to the ether.

3. Why isn't __Insert Game Here__ available in my region?

Many Steam games might be unavailable in your country if you have the temerity to live outside of the United States. This is not Steam's fault. Regional game availability is determined solely by the publisher, who should be the source of your ire. Gifting works regardless of region so you might find some helpful person in North America who can gift you the game.

Helpful Stuff
AUSTRALIANS!!!!

You need this program.

It reconfigures your Windows IPSEC settings (run it as an admin) to block out all but the servers which don't count towards your download quota on Steam. Now supports a bunch of ISPs through a graphical interface.

Basically guarantees you won't add to your download quota with Steam.

Download TCPview: TCPView

Then, use TCPview (run as admin if you're on Vista) to close all Steam TCP servers (this is important, NOT the UDP ones, just the TCP ones). Steam will then reconnect to a different server, which will hopefully get you a better speed. If you don't go faster in a couple of seconds, retry until you get a speed you like.

This shit totally needs to go into the OP, I've tipped this to so many people already.

Cool Community Add-Ons
Steam Signatures
With such a cool service, someone must have done some extra things to build on it. The forums have one such man, who made some super cool Steam signatures. Suds is his name and killing is his game. Except for the killing. The signatures automatically use backgrounds for the games and the correct icon. Pretty neat, and they're 100% free!

Steam Calculator
You can also use a script on his Steam Calculator page to see how much your Steam account would be worth if you had taken advantage of some obscure, arcane combination of special deals that nobody could ever have taken advantage of. Or something sort of like that.

Steam Sales Tracker
You might want to add this page to the steam links section - a complete sortable list of every game on steam, the metacritic score, and if its on sale, the % its discounted by. Yes. http://steam.addhawk.net/[/QUOTE]

I know opinions are like assholes but seriously, I wanted AvP to be good but the demo is disgusting.

    I disagree!

That's about the appropriate level of context for a reply to your criticism there.

Seriously, I love this game - to me it's just am advanced AvP2 and that's all I wanted. They have my money, definitely.

So I bought Bioshock off of Steam when it was on sale. I've been forcing myself to play it because "OMG! BIOSHOCK IS TEH BEST GAME EVAR!", and now I'm at the part with the artist and the crossbow. Still waiting for the game to get good... at least it was only $10.

I'm simply not interested in AvP. If I really want some AvP action I'll rent the movie.

I want to pre-order AvP, but I almost think it would be a better deal if you didn't get Universe At War. I do not want some shitty RTS that I'll never play.

It is really all about the big plot event. The story was good, the mechanics were pretty run of the mill. Not knowing what part of "BEST GAME EVAR" excites you (story, game mechanics, etc.), I am not in a position to tell you to keep playing.

I think page 1 is a good place to inform everyone who did not purchase the X-com pack (or who did not already have it) that they have utterly failed at being good gamers.

To anyone who did miss out - I might have a spare gift copy of the X-Com pack. If I do, I might be interested in trading it for a $5 Steam game, or I might be interested in just giving it away to some poor schmoe who doesn't have it.

$50 on craigslist will get you an old Pentium 4 based computer with which you can run your own Q3 server. Then buy real Quake III like a man.

Then PM/Steam Friend me, because I will totally play some TDM or CTF with your ass.

Each game is so drastic from each other other than sharing namesake and being FPS'. They are two different experiences, but for that price I recommend it.

Yeah, I loved FarCry 1, and bought 2 when it was on sale for $15. I paid... too much. Besides it crashing on me and me losing some time, it didn't really do much for me. The checkpoints are lame, story isn't compelling in any way, shape or form. It looks great, lots of guns, and some cool effects - it's more like a tech demo. I much prefer tropical paradise to african landscape.

I missed the X-Com pack, partly because I promised my wife I'd stop spending so much on games, and a have a killer backlog. That said, turn based anything with a grid layout (or hex) gets me aroused. I've also never played any of the X-Com series except for Enforcer when I bought it when it came out, hearing awesome things about the series. It's not what I was expecting...

SmokeStacks, about the only game I have to gift is Half-Life 2, which everyone and their mother already has 3 copies of. I don't suppose you lack this game, do you?

Thank you! I'm at work now so I'll have to click your link and start up Steam later on. What can I get you in return? I have stacks of old PC games that aren't moving on Goozex, any interest in old RPGs (think Ravenloft and Al-Qadim, SSi games)?

I can't really accept anything since I bought the X-Com pack while it was on sale (it was $2, I figured I'd buy an extra in case someone missed out - I did the same thing with Psychonauts), but damn if I'm not tempted. Shoot me a PM with what games you're having trouble moving and maybe we can work out an alternative payment scheme.

I would definitely be down for buying some old SSi RPGs.

The hell? I can' get past the age confirmation in steam all of a sudden-- tried restarting my client, but no good. The weird thing is it recognizes when I enter a 'bad' age, but just reloads the confirmation when I enter a 'good' one. Gonna cross-post this to the Aliens vs. Predator thread too (which may make the context of this a little more clear,) but thought it might be relevant to some others in this thread as well.

    What gives?

If anyone has an extra copy of Bioshock they are interested in giving away/selling/trading please shoot me a pm. I just have a craving to actually finish it and realized I must have traded in my 360 version. The only extra game I have atm is the horribly worthless Half Life 2 that may as well just come free with the steam client at this point but I'm willing to try and work a deal for it.

I have to agree with this, crappy port for PCs, seemed like they wanted you to play it with a gamepad anyway, crappy video options (was an issue for my old PC to get it to run remotely acceptable, and that was with a 7900gt). And it really just did not grab me, the setting, the little files you would pickup, atlas..all kinda dull. Amusingly the intro was good, while the rest was not, Dead Space's intro was boring but the gameplay immediately after was gripping to me.
