Are there any non-random-encounter patches for Far Cry 2? I'd love to purchase it, but I seriously despise infinitely spawning badguys in my shooters.
My 9.99 is either going to Far Cry 2, or Secret of Monkey Island SE....Hmmmm
I don't think there are, or I would've heard of them and installed them. Like Royce said you can stay off the beaten path here and there, or go really fast and hope to avoid a fight. I don't seem to get it right though and the game is worse for it in my eyes.
$9.99 isn't much though, it'd maybe be hard to argue that the game isn't worth $9. Although Monkey Island is also most definitely worth >$9. Hmm.
Look, I love Far Cry 2 for being in africa and not doing what Resident Evil did vis a vis the racism, and even though I am not that good at adventure games like MI or Sam and Max, I still think you should get Monkey Island.
edit:
It occurs to me that there is a bunch of crap they forgot to mention in the game's tutorial that I figured out later and that should be mentioned.
Far Cry 2 quick tips by Roycesraphim
Hit crouch while you are sprinting to do a slide, maneuver leaves you in a crouch and is very useful for infiltrating areas quickly while remaining stealthy.
When your health gets to 1 bar, you start bleeding out. Patching yourself costs no syrettes but this can be interrupted.
Your Machete is a instant cripple weapon and is stealthy. When an enemy is down, you can use it to kill them without wasting ammo and still be stealthy at a distance.
When an enemy is crippled, they loose their main weapon and use their secondary (usually a handgun). They are not a real threat but can catch you off guard.
You are better off shooting everything that blows up so it cannot blow up when your are hiding.
Things that blow up
Yellow Barrels
Red Barrels
Small propane tanks
compressed air tanks
gas pumps
gas tanks
cars
trucks
atv's
ammo depot
boats
Your buddies will rescue you only when they feel like it. Your rescue buddy will need at least 30 minutes of rest before they will help you. They don't rest when you play though, you need to sleep at a safe house for them to rest.
That briefcase detector also tracks down the tapes left by the reporter. They don't get you anything AFAIK, but still are interesting, more so that the characters you meet.
When driving, push L. Mouse button to look left quickly, R. Mouse button to look right quickly, and push L. Mouse + R. Mouse to look over your shoulder, a quicker way to keep track of who is shooting you.
Enemies rubberband chase you if they are in a vehicle when you pass them by, if they are on foot, you need to be at least 50 feet away by the time they start the engine for them to chase
Zebra's look like sign posts when you drive past them.
Anything larger than a gazelle will hurt your vehicle.
If you can't reach that beacon, look for a handglider
You can see snipers as well as they can see you.
When you hear a bullet wizz by your head, duck and look for the sniper.
The DLC weapons are in the middle of the weapon's hut and make the game much easier.
What ever you have as your secondary weapon is replaced by a handgun if you are wounded.
You break your legs if you fall too far
Your buddy revives you instantly if you fall or are hit by a car
Find more buddies by visiting the opening areas that you didn't use in this playthrough and by finding them where their planes crashed.
The game's files are locked (whatever that means) so its nigh impossible to mod it. So find those programmers and send them an email or a letter begging them to tell you how to unlock it. I would promise them sex and hope that most of them are gay or bi or that you could pass as a woman.

Glad I held off on getting Rome Gold during the holiday sale when it was selling for $9.99 (I think). Not that I am sure I will even buy it considering how much I played Medieval II since I bought it (Got through the first part of the tutorial).
Urgh - I feel like a complete divot for paying £15 for the mess that was Empire at the time, and not getting more than a few missions into its tutorial campaign before drifting off. £7!
The pack's obviously brilliant for those who don't own any of the contents (although I'd honestly question who had no prior interest in the Total War series and yet has the patience to sit through 3 massive games and expansions!), but a little infuriating for those looking to round out their collection. The 2 items I don't own (Medieval 2 expansion and Rome DLC) have completely inflated prices relative to the rest of the pack - I know Alexander has Brian Blessed, but how is it worth twice the price of the source game + expansion?
I didn't think it was possible but spending $2.49 on Rome Gold and $4.99 on Medieval 2 like I did during the Holiday Sale now looks like a bad deal. I've been wanting Kingdoms so that I can try the Stainless Steel and LOTR Third Age mods so that's a no-brainer.
Consensus seems to be that Empire has been patched to the point of being fun now, and they are continuing to develop patches for it, so I'll probably end up buying that too:
Today we’re announcing that a new update for Empire: Total War will shortly be entering its beta group phase.
We’ve spent the last few months listening to and acting on fan feedback on the battle AI in Empire, and this update has been designed to improve your experience.
This update seeks to reduce the occurrence of aggressive melee behavior in the AI armies, milling or ‘blobbing’ behavior during formation and the leapfrogging of units sometimes experienced.
It’s important to set expectations realistically with this update, where these issues occur they will be significantly reduced but not altogether eliminated.
The Battle AI will be a significant improvement over Empire 1.5, and is based on Empire. It will not exhibit the progression seen in Napoleons more advanced Battle AI system.
The beta group phase is for an indeterminate length of time so the public release date of this update isn’t scheduled yet.
If you’d like to take part in the beta and test the update for compatibility and stability please contact Sensei and sign up for the beta group.
Please note we’re not looking for feedback on the BAI’s performance in general, we’re looking to test stability and performance at this stage.

As an addendum we'd like to extend a special thanks to those who took part constructively and politely on the discussion thread here at the TWC, your points were well received.
Gah, I already had everything in the Total War pack except Empire and Alexander, and I bought it anyway just for the convenience of having it on steam. Damn the internet making buying stuff way too convenient.
And to think I nearly went a whole week without buying something...
Rome: Gold is a great deal. The more I think about it; it's a damn shame they don't offer the earlier games for memory's sake. They'd be cheap as hell and idle fun for a little while at least.
So, honest question:
Have any of you played Cake Mania? Have your significant others or kids played it?
I am thinking about gifting it to my nieces and nephews (ranging from 5 to 10 years old), and I was just hoping to get some type of feedback from fellow PA families on this.
Those who have played them before: is Rome still worth it if I have the other ones? Is it more tweaks and time period and graphics that make the newer Total Wars better or are there fundamental changes (for the better) in gameplay that make going back less fun?
Are memories of Rome just that, nostalgia for an old game that it's descendants have made redundant?
So I should start with Rome if I've never played any of them before?
Also, should I have the expansion installed?
Absolutely no reason not to. In fact, I heartily recommend it. As for expansions...I'm not sure. Gold gives you the 1st, but I don't think the 2nd is required at all, and would actually advise against it. Pointless cash-grab imo.

The expansion, Barbarian Invasion is like a totally different game in many respects. It takes place during Rome's decline. It doesn't change Rome Total War in any way, and it's very good in its own right.

For some reason, Rome TW Gold (Rome + Barb Exp) is 3.99... but so is Rome TW Complete (Rome Gold + Second Exp).

I liked the way that for most of Barbarian Invasion your big savage mob is your capital. Only towards the end of the game, playing as the Barbarians, do you actually settle down into a town.
Hey, for folks who got Mass Effect 2 via Steam, any sense of how it would run on this rig:
AMD 64 X2 Dual 3800+
2GB RAM
MSI Radeon HD 4850 512MB
Win XP
I don't want to go into the ME2 thread for fear of spoilers.
I'm playing it for the first time. So far I've conquered most of Gaul and a little bit of Greece without much difficulty. The last two cities held by the Gaul's have full stack garrisons, so they might be a bit harder to deal with. I have a feeling the real challenge will be throwing down with other Romans once we've carved up the world.
Rome was a civilization that grew out of a small agricultural community founded on the Italian Peninsula as early as the 10th century BC. Located along the Mediterranean Sea, it became one of the largest empires in the ancient world. :^:
