One more Boston Meetup before PAXEast?

WaterbornWaterborn Registered User regular
edited March 2010 in PAX Archive
So, given that the January meet-up to Funspot fell through
due to cold weather and concerns about the distance to Laconia, NH
does anyone want to try for one more gathering prior to being overrun by the PAX Horde in March? I would be willing to host something at my place. I currently have 26 consoles and 8 full-sized arcade cabs. The only issue is that I live a bit outside of Boston (Woburn, only 15 minutes or so).

If this does not sound like a plan, let's here some other ideas. I really think that we should get one more community meet-up in prior to the big event.

So who is up for it? Any ideas on meeting locations or activities?

UPDATE:
This event has been confirmed for Saturday, February 27th, and my place in Woburn and it will be kicking off at 6 pm. If you need an address or directions, pm me. See below for a full list of games that will be available to play. If you have a gaming system not listed, please feel free to bring it and we can hook it up to one of the three TV's in our house. This should be fun.

Send a pm to Waterborn for directions and phone number if you can make it.

Sounds interesting. I'm not fully comfortable driving that far out on my own (from Salem), but I'm interested.

I'd potentially be interested assuming it fits my schedule. I'd be coming from the north.

This would AWESOME. I work on the Burlington/Woburn line, but live downtown Boston.

Never done something like this before, but am more than willing to bring my own consoles/controllers/games if there is a gaming focus.

    8 arcade cabinets!?!? I'm jealous!

If you're free, we should try to do something this month leaving room for an additional meet up pre pax in March :). I'm all for a gaming day and can supply consoles and controls, and chip in for snacks/food.

Is there a chance I could hitch a ride from downtown Boston? :P

I can provide an Xbox and 2 controllers, as well as various nutrients such as chips, dips, and cake.

I pretty much have all the major consoles already with the exception of a NEO GEO AVS (just traded my NEO GEO arcade cab today BTW) and a PS3 and Wii. If anyone wants to bring games or consoles, post what you have and we can start a list. Off the top of my head, here is what I currently own game-wise:

    Arcade Cabs
    Donkey Kong
    Pac-Man Plus
    Robotron
    Smash TV
    Nintendo Playchoice 20
    Taito Turtles
    NOVA 2001 (Universal Cab)
Dedicated Sega Genesis Cab (custom built by Buena Vista Games)
MAME in a converted Taito Cab (under construction, hope to have up and running soon)

    Consoles
    Xbox 360
Modded Gen I Xbox loaded with emulators
    Odyssee II
    Atari 400 Computer
    Atari 800XL Computer
    Atari 2600
    Atari 5200
    Atari 7800
    ColecoVision
    Intellivsion (Series I & II)
    Sega Genesis (Series I, II & III) + 32x
Sega Master System Adapter for the Genesis
    Sega CD
    Sega Saturn
    Sega Dreamcast
    NES (Toaster & Top-loader)
    SNES
    N64
    Gamecube
    Playstation I
    PS2
    Turbo Graphix
    Panasonic 3DO

And too many games to count (though I have sold off a good portion of my console game collection to fund my relatively new arcade cab habit)

Here are a few pics for your viewing pleasure

    Er, I am 42:mrgreen:

So it looks like we might have some interest in this meet-up. I would be willing to provide food (say some home made pizza) if everyone else can bring beverages and snacks.

Now we need a date and time. What would work best for everyone in general?

I've got snes, xbox, 360, ps3, and games/controllers. As far as date, I think a Saturday would be ideal. Maybe Feb 27th? I'm pretty flexible whatever the date.

I'm fully flexible, but we should try to find a date which works for the most people. Btw, I'd have to come after 6pm on Fridays.

Waterborn since it is your place why don't you list 3 or 4 dates, Fridays and Sundays in Feb and March (unless you also have Sats free in March?). That way we can all reply with which dates we can make and CAN just pick the most popular date.

27th would work for me, 26th is a toss up, due to the fact I may be working that day and the schedule wont be up until next week. As bad as this may sound, necessity says money is important so if they give me that day, I need to work it.

Otherwise, I would take a ride from you gannobd9, if you'll have me. :D

I'd also like to check out the party venue before things get crazy.

A good plan probably would be for us all to just meet at North Station (could you take the T there Lucazzo and Postal?) and then go to Waterborn's house.

Gamer, maybe I misread your message. You said you'd be taking Amtrak to North Station, right? I can pick you up right there...you don't need to get on the T to go somewhere else. I'm talking about the North Station at TD Banknorth Garden...that's what you're talking about, right?

Hey Folks, sorry that I have been MIA for a few days. Crazy work schedule. I can do Saturdays as well, but have to work most of them in Feb/March until 5 pm, so the fun would have to start at around 6 or 7 pm.

No quarters required (all games are on Free Play) though I might consider charging a "Beer Tax" for entry

Since my schedule is insane, I will let you folks choose the date. Unless it is a complete "No Way Jose" choice, I will go with whatever date ensures the greatest number of people can attaned. So far, the 27th seems to the be dates of choice. If we kick it off at 7 pm, does this work for everyone?

BTW, just got my Robotron cab back up and running. If we do this on the 27th, I just may have time to get the MAME machine running as well. That would require a quick turn around on my tax return and then same on an order for parts.

I might be interested in this, depending on the night. Thursday is right out for me, I could probably do a Friday or Saturday. As I tend to be on the Board game and PC side of geekery (though I logged a lot of time on stand-up machine's as well), I could try to bring a few if people are interested.

I will be paying my beer tax in actual beer - any requests? (never too early to start talking about these things).

Maybe we should mess with Waterborn by putting our beers on the cabinets while playing. (jk - as long as you don't have any of those Pizza Hut style tabletop cabinets you're probably safe :0)

I'd like to join in too it sounds like fun! =) I'm at MIT and don't have a car so I need to figure out how to get to your place.

I have an irrational overwhelming fear of being on a bus by myself (I tend to get horribly lost when i take buses), so if i could meet up with someone at a Tstop so i don't have to make the bus journey to Woburn myself, that'd be awesome.

As for beer, I like darker, craft beer, but am not picky. As long as the label has neither "Anheiser" or "Busch" on it, we should be good to go.

I am going to go ahead and set the date for Saturday Feb 27th kicking off at 6pm.
