Well this is a huge disappointment for me. Hellgate London's multiplayer is to be a paid MMO.
In addition to yesterday's announcement that Hellgate: London will be shipping in Summer 2007, developer Flagship Studios revealed this week that the game's multiplayer component is a subscription-based MMO. Speaking to Shacknews at CES in Las Vegas, CEO Bill Roper noted that the game is a full scale massively multiplayer game, with genre trappings such as guilds, continually developed content, a full social system, and raid-type gameplay.
Drawing similarities to ArenaNet's Guild Wars, the Hellgate MMO is heavily instanced. Group and solo PvE is the game's main focus; PvP will exist in a small scale form, but is not a major element of the initial launch. It will also feature a Hardcore mode similar to that found in Blizzard's Diablo II, a game on which many members of the Hellgate team worked. Hellgate's MMO will contain all of the missions and story from the single-player aspect of the game, as well as exclusive gameplay modes and content. Like the single-player game, the MMO will be comprised of dynamically generated areas and items. Further content will be continually added over time by a dedicated Flagship team.
Flagship expects to launch an open beta prior to the launch of the game. Pricing details have not yet been determined, though Roper noted that there will be some kind of trial or free play system for those looking to get a taste of the game without commitment.
"I think that just as Diablo and Diablo II started this religious argument over whether they're RPGs or not, I think that Hellgate will spark that same debate over whether it's an MMO or not," commented Roper, who added that the game has been designed as an MMO from day one. Check back this week for an extensive interview with Roper, delving more comprehensively into the online aspects of Hellgate: London.
This makes me sad.
mod edit: Update on Page 6: Seems they haven't decided if it's going to be paid to play or not. Roper was misquoted, or his quote was misinterpreted, or something, but the fact is they just don't know.
This makes me curious. I definitely am not looking forward to it as I was before. This game was the highlight of the Digital life expo in NYC as far as I was concerned.
If everything is randomized, what on earth would I pay for? The ability to play with other people?
This is bad. I hold out a little hope that it wont suck.
so-wait.
They want me to PAY for insatanced gameplay that is PvE centric?
Um-no thanks. It's called Guildwars, and they have PvP too.
GASP!
I am still going to rock the single player.
Pitty that there won't be a free D2/Diablo-esque online mode. I guess they saw the success of D2 and got a taste for money.

thats exactly what I was thinking for a long time before this was announced.. some sort of guild wars type business model that allows for no subscription fees.
I had my hopes up for Huxley also, but I heard that the combat is going to be mostly smaller battles in instance type arenas. Plus it's going to be more Unreal-ish rather than slower PS tactical type fights.
It might be awesome, but I have little faith in Korean MMO developers who push out dime-a-dozen bland MMO games every day.

I replied to this in the mmo thread, but this is a different thing I'm about to say.
Basically, I've lost interest in this because I was going to play it as an aside to eve, my other current mmo. I cannot afford to play for two mmo game subscriptions. Unless the price is VERY low, or there is a pay by hour model, I wont play it enough to make this worthwhile. It does not and will not have enough multiplayer features to make me play it exclusively from eve, because I wasn't even interested in gw and I only play d2 on battlenet once every few months or so for a few days.
So in that case, they lose my subscription, and my game purchase.
I'm sure I'm not alone here. It's not very smart to make a bare bones mmo that tries to play with the big boys. It's not going to work.

(PSN: Morninglord) (Steam: Morninglord) (WiiU: Morninglord22) I like to record and toss up a lot of random gaming videos here.
It is a bummer that the multi player is pay-to-play, but when I think about it this is probably one of the few games that I'd be willing to pay in order to play online.

So... some people, along with Roper, might say that it isn't doing things worthy of an MMO fee?

And what if it's something like $1 a month, to help pay with their servers? Blizzard has their past sales to pay for Battle.net; what does Flagship have?
So is there any word on whether or not players can still host their own servers for free? Even if it's only over a LAN, it might still be worth buying if you can do that.
If Hellgate's multiplayer is more expensive than Phantasy Star Online/Universe for the same type of experience and features, I'll happily call them complete lunatics. But if the price is around PSO/U's $10 per month, I would find it more reasonable.
Still wouldn't pay for it either way though.

I can sum up my reaction to this in one word. Ah what the heck, I'll give myself two.
Fuck. That.
On the other hand, it saves me some serious cash as I will not have to buy a new computer to run this game. Although as someone who plays Diablo II largely solo, I may not be out of the woods yet. I was looking forward to being *able* to play this game online, though. And that almost never happens.
I'm not getting it at launch anymore. Naw, I'm just gonna wait until somebody else here does the guinea pig thing and convinces a band of us to join him in killing some london hellbeast things ... from hell. In other words: Unless it gets serious praise..
If it was "designed as an MMO from day one" why is this the first I've heard that? Have I just not been paying much attention to HG:L news or were they just being misleading in the promotion of their product?

Wonder if they'll do a Mac port, looks intriguing.

Will there still be "free" singleplayer?
yes.
Can we at least play for free over a LAN?

Multi Diablo 2 esque action was what I wanted. Offline will be awesome I'm sure, but it just won't be the same...
Maybe in a year when I'm not playing City of Villans anymore or if the price is low I'll do it.
