You people are stupid for not buying Hellgate.
It will be fucking hotness.
Just....offline.
Pigdogs...
Multi Diablo 2 esque action was what I wanted. Offline will be awesome I'm sure, but it just won't be the same...
Maybe in a year when I'm not playing City of Villans anymore or if the price is low I'll do it.
Fair enough. Launch prices are usually too rich for my blood anyway. But come on guys!
This will still be as good if not better than D2 offline. And I know you guys rocked the D2 single player when you had no internets or just wanted to goof off.

If it was "designed as an MMO from day one" why is this the first I've heard that? Have I just not been paying much attention to HG:L news or were they just being misleading in the promotion of their product?
Besides, EA's in on this aren't they? I don't think I'd want to play anything that's potentially going to be hosted on their hardware anyway.
Giving this product's multiplayer a possible "shelf-life" makes me really, really hesitant to invest any time in it.
That said, if the fee is less than the current MMO standard $15/month, I'd probably consider it. It's heavily instanced, though, so I don't see myself being too into paying anything more than $5-10.

Basically my answer. Maybe if they have some form of LAN play so that a few people can play, but even then :?
Looks like I'll be skipping this one. I don't care how much they constantly add shit or whatever, I'm not paying to play one of the big MMOs, so why do they expect me to play for a frikken Hack and Slash with some extra players?
You know, if this game had been designed from the ground up as a MMO, I wouldn't mind this announcement even a tiny bit. As it stands, though, it seems like they're thinking with their wallets - why shouldn't a Diablo/Guild Wars style game make a monthly subscription fee?
Fuck. I just thought of something else.
Where are the character files going to be stored, then? Server shards? Locally means they'll be hacked, server shards means something a lot more annoying than just USEast and USWest. Fuck fuck fuck.
The reason this is disappointing to me isn't so much that I'm unwilling to consider paying monthly for a game. It's that it seems to indicate that this game isn't going to be as DII-like as I had hoped, since if it were there would be no reason for a monthly fee.
I still have hope for this game, but this is troubling. Once they start worrying about balancing the PvP, that could be it for me. Blizzard North made no effort in that respect and admitted it, and it led to a PvM game in which you could create totally ridiculous characters of all types, under- or over-powered, and have them use a wide variety of items.
Part of what made Guild Wars so boring for me was that they put a huge focus on class balance for PvP, which essentially meant that there were a few specific builds within each class but little variety overall, and that the game had incredibly little item variety. The reason I love DII is that you can build a character around almost any skill in the game and have fun doing it. I hope that's the case with HG:L, but as I said, this raises some doubts.

as like many others, this is hugely disappointing for me. I too was wanting to play this game online and have it be like diablo2. I didn't touch Diablo2 single player, I thought Diablo1 did the single player better. But in multiplayer, Diablo2 was just totally awesome. Argh... why.
Hellgate: London starts off as probably going to have free online in the vein if the Diablos
Then, EA signs on as a partner
Magically it turns subscription based for the multiplayer.
HMMMMMMMMMMMMMM
wrong.
decision was made before EA bankrolled em.
Uh, do you have proof of this? Because EA joined back in November, and the subscription thing was JUST announced.
Just what i picked up on the internets.
Which is not at all reliable, but this is also the press release, which doesn't indicate it's the first that we have heard of this.

you caught me, I was just pulling shit out of thin air.
also, I am too lazy to dig up the forum post where I read it. I was on the flagship studios forum.
It doesn't matter.
They would have jumped on it for money either way. No matter how great and noble we think the Bliz guys are, they still need money to feed their families.

guys I don't speak MMOese, what does "instanced" mean?
When you enter an area it creates a little part of the world where only you and your friends/party/guild/neighbors/sexual partners can see. It's not public.
It's a way of trying to eliminate camping areas while basically eliminating any sense of persistence or achievement in the game world.

Was there any sense of achievement in killing the same enemy for the fiftieth time? Or any persistence when they respawned five minutes later?
Instancing is hands-down better than its predecessor: sitting on your ass all day waiting for a rare spawn / sitting on your ass all day killing a common spawn

That, it is. However, it kills any semblence of having a community. When everything is instanced in Guild Wars you always feel like there may be a community out there - but you never see them. It's very jarring.

Well. This is, uh, perhaps the most surprising info released about an upcoming game I have read in a long while. It totally came out of left field for me.
I really hope they still have multiplayer LAN.

If you can't shell out 10-15 dollars a month for a subscrip you should probably reprioritize your spending habits.

Even GuildWars couldn't satiate the need......it didn't feel.....diablo-y enough.

Most of Ropers fans are nuts over the concept of free.
I'll still get the game.
Subscription fee.
Heavily instanced.
This is just making me :x all over the place.

Good thing they charge us to buy the game then, huh?
I wonder how much load a heavily-instanced game puts on their servers to justify a monthly fee...

Good thing Guild Wars hasn't been tagged with expansions that makes the old content all but useless.
Because that would totally suck.

This game has me agreeing with Uriel. It is dead to me now.
(Just kidding. Sorta. I mean, fuck paying for a Diablo 2 clone.)
I really hope they still have multiplayer LAN.
