The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
Gameplay in BLASTER MASTER™:OVERDRIVE retains the critically acclaimed format of the original NES BLASTER MASTER™, alternating between side-scrolling platforming in S.O.P.H.I.A. and overhead-perspective blasting and exploration when controlling Alex. Upgrades for S.O.P.H.I.A. must be collected to access progressively more challenging terrain and a total of eight distinct areas. Each area features a mutant boss that must be defeated to progress.
I wish they'd show some bigger screenies, or some video, but this is most likely looking like an instabuy.
This was a pretty smart business move, as the original BM is still pumping though my veins from the VC release. If this ends up being good, and was being developed for awhile, they did a really good job keeping this under wraps.
If this is decent, I'll probably pick it up. I have fond memories of playing the original with my cousin. We would rent it and play through the whole thing in an evening.

Awesome - it's not a sequel, but a remake of the original.
Why the eff has this flown under every single person's radar? If the controls are somewhat improved from the original, this game is going to be a total blast. I admit a giddy smile on my face from the redone music.

Bought the game, played for half an hour, beat act one boss.
Impressions:
Much closer to a sequel then a remake. Music is the same but remixed but the maps and powerups are completely different.
-Start to get in and out of tank, Select is map.
-Only 5 levels of GUN so far, kinda like the GBC game.
-Also returning from the GBC game, Grenade Launcher instead of hand grenades.
-SOPHIA controls like Sophia. Exactly the same.
-Small enemies have attack animations that make them hittable with the first tank shot. Very welcome change.
-Only SOPHIA change so far is that your cannon uses a portion of your new energy bar. Regular shot drains it after about 10 bursts without a stop. Is expandable, recharges quickly.
-Smaller PC sprites=more maneuverability.
-Slower enemies (so far)
-Life bar and energy bar upgrades available; though unlike the GBC version they are in small increments around the maps and gates, makes it feel really Metroidy.
-In fact, the game feels like a Super Metroid to the originals Metroid. Friendlier but still hardcore.
-One live, no continues. Save system instead. Saves are in Gates.
-Gun level is thankfully saved. Not all gates have save points, but thankfully they are on your map.
-Map is awesome.
-Early enemies are slow and not aggressive but hit fairly hard. Red versions are a bit more aggressive and hit a bit harder, as to be expected.
Spoiler time
-There is a third gun that shoots blue homing projectiles, but very slowly.
Level 5 gun is a machine gun multiburst, firing 3 auto shots left right and center in a tight burst. Really good gun.
-Act One boss is the crab. Grenade trick does not work. Slow projectiles, easy to read but big life bar and hard hitting attacks. Level 5 gun recommended.
-First upgrade is the grapple hook. Is awesome. Change your cannon to grapple by hitting A and vice versa.
-Area Two can be found without any upgrades and Area Four can be reached with just the grapple.
After playing Blaster Master on the Wii, my overwhelming thought was "Cool game for the time, but it could really use a remake or a sequel. These maps are really boring." And then voila, new Blaster Master on WiiWare appears. I've got the money at the moment so I'm very tempted to pick it up.

Now if this would only come out on PSN or Live. Blaster Master was MY game back in my NES days. It Mega Man and Final Fantasy were the trifecta that owned my heart.
-All weapons can be powered up to level five! Homing Level Five is very useful!
-Act Two boss is the centapede from GBC and is really easy! Grenade Launcher Level 5 owns him.
-He gives you hover! Uses Energy as I expected, but does not do vertical..yet! Hookshot+Hover gets you pretty far though.
-Act Three is Water! Uses Act Five music from Blaster Master1
-Gates are very important in this game, most of the power ups are there.
-Sub Weapons (Aka Lightning Multi Warhead, and Homing Missile are absent so far. Not missed by this gamer.
-B is strafe! Makes boss one a lot easier!
What's that you say? More spoiler filled impressions?
-Act Three's boss? Flame Crab. Pretty good boss fight actually. Another great grenade launcher boss.
-Gives you drill to pierce the heavens...and get into area four.
-Well actually you can go into Area Four quite a few times before getting the drill and get some powerups. You're going to need them.
-Can't get to the last room in the fourth area? Try spidermaning using grapping hook diagonally and hovering. You'll make it eventually.
-Fourth Act Boss? Giant Bat. If you've ever played Blaster Master he's a lot like the Lobster on STEROIDS. Lobster+Extra Bullet Hell. I switched off between level 5 GUN and level 5 homing missile. His enrage is even more ridiculous.
-He gives you dive, just like that Lobster Bastard.
What is the setup for controls, and are there any different options. Classic controler?
You have to use the wand and there's no button config.
1 = Shoot
2 = Jump
- = Map
+ = Get out of Vehicle
A = Change Weapon
Hold B = Strafe
I find holding the Wand horizontally to be a bit of a nuisance, but the arrangement is basically fine (basically identical to OG Master Blaster). I just don't get why they couldn't add Classic Controller support.
Yep, bought it. I beat the first boss with a sliver of health. I'm liking what I am seeing so far. I definitely wish there was classic controller support though.
Haha, found I had 1400 points somehow, so I went and bought it. TOTALLY worth it. It's pretty much the old game redone for prettier and better. Still pretty hardcore though. First boss beated. It's funny how you still have the entire "go get powerup, exit, go get powerup, exit, etc" routine.

They announced it yesterday.
This looks like it could be really good or really disappointing. I didn't really like the redone music.

Video's description:
Exactly. Not a remake. The video already shows lots of content that was not in the original.
I was just demonstrating that it's not a sequel either, but good point. :P
Anyway, I never played the original but this looks like it might be fun. I liked the music as well.

Add me!
It was my hope GRIN would handle the remake after Bionic Commando Re-Armed, but it sounds like Sunsoft(?) handled this game perfectly.
So the big question: Get this? And if so, get it alongside Castlevania Rebirth?

I had to stop because my hand was cramping from being forced to use the fucking Wand. Not cool.
Other than using B to strafe, I've had no problems with the wand. I'm past the first boss, and loving it so far.

Why are you being ungrateful? I pointed you in the right direction, sorry for not helping you with your laziness.
Anyway, apparently this has turned out to be pretty good. I should try the first games. :P

So happy this is working out. Shame I have 700 points.
Until I got Hover, which makes a world of difference.
Game is pretty damn good now. Also love the fully upgraded 'Everything 180 degrees to me DIES' spreadgun.
