The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
I just recently picked up a used DSi off a friend of mine who didn't want it anymore, and I know next to nothing about what the NDS has to offer in terms of games (short of the Chrono Trigger re-release, which I'm off to pick up right after posting this). Normally, it'd be easy enough to track down the kind of games I'm interested in that are generally well-received by the community at large, but most of the sites I trust for game reviews and opinions don't typically handle NDS games.
On top of that, I'm not really after the best games of the genre I like (generally RPG and Strategy types), but I'm more interested in the "must play" style of recommendations. Games that shouldn't be missed whether you like the genre or not.

RPG and strategy, you say? Let me introduce you to my friend - his name is Shiren.
It's a Roguelike, just outside of your interests, but I expect you'll find enough commonality and enough difference to get into it. It is also the only game I am comfortable calling "perfect".
Also: Mario Kart DS is probably the best installment in the franchise and you'd be doing yourself a disservice if you don't pick it up too.
I say this in every DS recommendation thread, but I don't think anyone is taking me seriously!
Picross DS.
Over the weekend I beat the last puzzle in that game after owning it for two and a half years. Probably the one handheld game I've spent most time with ever. Picross 3D is out soon!
Also I know Apollo Justice isn't a favorite of many, but I thought it was fun.
I beat the last case just two hours ago. The characters aren't nearly as strong as in the PW games (likely because this is their first game), but those guys can still spin a helluva crazy plot. The way everything comes together in the end, leaving not even the most minute details untouched, is still masterful. But you probably won't get that much out of it if you haven't played the previous games.

I've never played The World Ends With You, but I can vouch for Scribblenauts being my favourite DS game of all time. Kept me occupied for hours just on the title screen!

I was actually a little disappointed by Scribblenauts because it was so hyped, and it didn't quite do what I expected. But I think it's still a good game and a great way to pass the time.
TWEWY, on the other hand, was just so awesome.
I will also throw in a recommendation for Advance Wars: Days of Ruin if for no other reason than the awesome soundtrack.

For me, the start screen allowing you to do whatever you want made the purchase much better. If it weren't for that I think I'd have slowed down my playing after the first few areas.
If you have the cash I'm going to plug my favorite import of the last few years, Umihara Kawase DS. I made a thread about it but the cost is keeping a lot of people from buying it. However if you have the $52~, do it. It's so much fun and as you get better and find new routes through the level it gets even better.
edit : Umihara Kawase is amazing but unfortunately only a port of the SNES (or PSX) version..
It's both games (PSX version is the second edition), with some new levels/rearrangements of the PSX game just for the DS version. It's also the only good portable version of it, as the PSP game has broken physics that make the game just awful to play. It's basically the definitive edition to own.
Cherrn is totally right, Picross DS is a ton of fun. I didn't know anything about Picross prior to picking up the game on a lark, and it's wonderful.
Other favorites of mine: Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes is a brilliant mashup of RPG and match-3 puzzle game that out-Puzzle Quests Puzzle Quest. Though the original PQ is still good and worth a pick-up if you haven't played it in some capacity.
If you like RPGs, the Dragon Quest remakes are solid gold. The World Ends With You is also really great because of its wholesale usage of all the DS features, and for as much as people rag on SE for just rehashing FF it's really one of the most novel and original games to come out in a long time. If you like dungeon crawlers, pick up Etrian Odyssey 2. And the FF4 remake is really well done, though terribly difficult in the endgame.
If you like nostalgia, Retro Game Challenge is a love letter to the early-80s NES culture, with faux 8-bit games that you totally would have played and loved as a kid if they were real.
For adventure/puzzle games, I really love the Professor Layton titles. Brilliant logic puzzles wrapped in a '70s-era animation aesthetic.
There are a ton of other great older games, like Meteos, Kirby Canvas Curse, Mario Kart DS, New SMB DS, etc.
Since you have a DSi, I can't recommend enough all the art style games from dsiware. The only one I didn't like was digidrive, but the rest are amazing games.

Yeah, no. Scribblenauts is the biggest disappointment of all time, that's for sure
It's not a very good game, like at all; the puzzles devolve into "what one specific item class do we want you to use" reallllly quickly, the controls are terribad, and there's no real incitement to not jetpack/flying creature your way through levels to win, plus there's very little reason to do all of the puzzles besides to...well...do them, I guess
From a technological standpoint the game is fuckin' amazing, but as a game, it sucks. This sounds weird, but I don't regret buying it, but I do regret playing it.
I'd much rather see Objectnaut in a game like FO3 or something, but as it stands Scribblenauts is not good

I'll hit the something different spot and stick with RPG and Strategy. Knights in the Nightmare is crazy fun, really different and has some great artwork and personality.

Just think Action Strategy Bullet Hell RPG.
seconded. last DS game I really got into (my fault, not the system/games) and it was phenomenal.
The World Ends With You is a must since you mentioned RPGs. The FFIV remake is fantastic as well. The graphic style actually works really well.
Tetris DS and Planet Puzzle League are musts for puzzle games...if you can find them. Tetris DS is pretty expensive since it's OOP, and I'm not sure what the status of PPL is. If you can find them reasonably priced certainly pick them up. Clubhouse Games is also a fantastic board/card game collection.
I'll second most of what's been mentioned already (EBA did not appeal to me at all, but I can see why people like it), and also offer Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword (NG goodness on a handheld and with a fixed camera angle!), Etrian Odyssey 2 (addictive, unforgiving in a good way, 1st person dungeon crawler), and Jump Ultimate Stars (if you don't mind importing). I suggest JUS in every one of these threads I pop into because it's just that awesome. If you like Smash Bros. at all you'll dig it, even more so if you're an anime fan. Keep an eye on PlayAsia for their 20% sales and grab it.
Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia
The Dragon Quest IV and V remakes
Rocket Slime
The various Phoenix Wright Games
The World Ends With You
Just a quick question, but is that DS Castlevania any good?
I didn't like two of the three versions released on the GBA (The only one I enjoyed was Aria of Sorrow... I think).

One and a half pages in, and still no one mentioned the DS Zeldas.
That's a statement, I'd say.

What the fuck people? The thread maker notes a taste for RPGs and nobody brings up the Etrian Odyssey series?
The games are great. It's an oldschool dungeon crawler, and you use the touchscreen to draw out your maps as you explore. It's also tough as nails, this isn't an RPG for lightweights (though, once you figure things out it can become easy). A third entry in the series is on the way.
blaze_zero, all three of the DS Castlevanias are good. It's just a matter of which one people prefer over the other. Order of Ecclesia actually has difficulty involved, and a sorta unique combat system since your regular attacks consume MP (and then waiting a bit will let it come back sorta fast). Dawn of Sorrow is just an upgrade of Aria of Sorrow, so if you liked that one you'll DEFINITELY like it. Portrait of Ruin (my personal favorite of the three) just kinda has a general kick-back theme in 'story' to the Genesis game and give you two characters to play as (so you can either play a mage or the general ass-kicker with melee combat).
Posts
Advance Wars: Days of Ruin.
Greatest strategy games on the DS, if not any system.
Have you tried Rhythm Heaven yet?
Scribblenauts
The Dragon Quest IV and V remakes
Rocket Slime
The various Phoenix Wright Games
The World Ends With You
I'll also add:
Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story
GTA: Chinatown Wars
Prof. Layton & the Diabolical Box
Space Invaders EX2
New Super Mario Bros.
Absolutely fantastic.

Falser words have never been spoken.
Elite Beat Agents is well worth whatever tiny amount of cash you'll have to spend to buy it these days.
Yep. I'm just saying that picking up EBA for $5-10 is a better recommendation for a new DS owner than spending $50+ to import either Ouendan game.
But seriously-
Get Elite Beat Agents.

A terrific RPG within the SMT universe :winky:
Valkyrie Profile : Covenant of the Plume
Another amazing RPG that combines a captivating story, great music, combat and multiple endings.
Rune Factory 1 & 2
ridiculously long gameplay that combines Harvest Moon with RPG action
Dragon Quest 4, 5 & (soon) 6
Classic RPG right there..
The 3 Castlevanias
Classic action and metroidvania addictiveness
