The group rushed into the all-too-small room, and bolted the door when the last straggler was safely inside.
Even through the thickness of the metal door that they had just shut, they could hear the pounding and wailing of... them. The scratching and clawing continued for some time, as the survivors merely stared in horror.
It took a long time for them to breathe out. A deep sigh of relief, as they realised they were all still alive.
And then a sudden thud made the majority flinch, as a man rammed his fist into the wall.
"God damn it! That was too close!"
He was met by silence; they all agreed. It had been too close for comfort.
"Some of us got bitten, didn't we? Come on, speak up! It's not like we think of each other as people, anyways. That stupid codename bullshit, so we don't get attached to people who might have to kill - so own up! Who's going to turn into one of them? I'll tear you apart myself!"
The silence deepened, until it was a black hole of terror. Then, suddenly, the punctuation;
Drip.
Drip.
Drip.
The enraged man's eyes widened, as he realised what had happened.
"I've been bitten. But - I'm immune, I have to be immune -"
And the axe found its mark, directly in his neck. As his head rolled, another member of the group piped up.
"There are too many of us trying to travel together at the moment. We need to split up, and arrange a rendezvous for all the groups in the next nearest safehouse. Plan?"
The group nodded.
Any plan was better than no plan.
"We can relax for a moment," the man continued;
"We're safe... for now."
