I guess enough people own a Zune for a Zune help/tech thread, perhaps? I know there's an impressions thread floating around, but the thing has been around long enough by now that people know what it is and I think that thread has died down.
Anyway, I got one for Christmas and have been fiddling around with it and the Zune Marketplace for the last couple of weeks. I also have a Zune Video Converter program (Xilisoft Zune Video Converter 3, to be precise) and the Xilisoft Zune To DVD Converter as well.
A few problems I'm running into:
1) Isn't the Zune supposed to support AVC video? Whenever I convert from DVD to AVC or from one video format to AVC, the Zune software recognizes the .MP4 file, but it has to reconvert. I don't know what the fuck it's doing, because the Xilisoft software puts it in the proper resolution, and it's supposed to have converted with Zune-compatible settings. This conversion within the Zune software takes a long-ass time.
2) Same thing happens with some .WMVs that I've converted to using the Xilisoft converter. You can select Zune AVC or Zune WMV, and sometimes the WMV will just sync up immediately, but often you will have to convert. What gives?
3) Is there any way to change the name of a track or video file or reorganize photos once you've synced them to the Zune?
4) Fuck off, Terrorbyte.

Unfortunately they did not.
I guess the Zune is okay...
Fuck, I'm not paying PS3 prices for a PS3.
it's buggy shite.
use the zune video converter.
This one can't be chalked up to Microsoft. There were licensing difficulties - similar to the difficulties Apple has has with iTunes TV shows and Movies.
It doesn't look like this situation will change any time soon - but that really doesn't matter due to our status as a haven for "teh piracy".
you dont see apple holding back sale of the ipod itself here just because there are issues with the online content delivery store.
its a clusterfuck to not be releasing a major product like this simultaneously in Canada.
A friend of mine bought a Zune and he likes his pr0n on the go.
Has Microsoft alleviated any of the software problems yet? The engadget review made it seem like it was a miniature hell on earth.
Really? Dammit I wanted one.
So what are my other options for a portable device with a good screen that'll play music and video?
Xbox Live Gamertag: Suplex86
So, anyone out there with song-swapping stories?
Apparently the next update gets rid of 3x3 sharing for non-Marketplace music. GOOD.

Does microsoft sell refurbished ones like apple does with ipods?
Whoa whoa so any of MY 10,000 plus songs that I DIDN'T buy on the marketplace can be given to any other Zune user? Like stuff I rip from CDs and what not? Because that would be pretty sweet.
Apparently.
So is there no way to rename videos that you've already synced? I never got an answer on that.
Search for "Xbox 360 converter VLC" or something similar. Using VLC (video player) and a batch file, you can convert almost anything (including MKV) into a WMV, which will at least play on a Zune.
If you rename the video in the zune software with right click > edit, then sync, it renames them.
Anyone else's zune "lag" a lot? Mine will hang randomly while browsing menus or switching screens, occasionally even getting then circle of dots loading screen briefly. Also, my Zune seems to turn off with static electricity, and needs to be reset afterwards.
I've read this is a common issue.. but I hope it can be fixed with firmware.
Thanks for contributing to the thread, you may now leave it. I'll cover from here.
The only way I got my DvD's from my collection to Zune was to rip them and them save them as .avi. It works, but is verrrrrry fucking time consuming.
Yeah, a simple way to do this would be great.. I know the long ways, but does anyone know of an app that will do it in one shot?
Ok, so it doesn't go through the whole reconversion process when you do that? It'll just change the name?
Xilisoft Zune DVD Converter 3 actually works well.
I'm going to try that Alive converter now though.
their dvd ripper is ok but thats because its been through 30 versions.
It's an app that converts youtube, google videos and what not into wmv for easy recognition by the zune software. It's nice because it places a button right in the tool bar, and all you need to click on it, and then wait till it downloads and it'll show up on the Zune software ready to be synched. No converstion needed.
The downsides is that it can be slow (though it doesn't seem to take almost any resources), and only works for IE.
Does it work through an IE emulated tab within FireFox?
Or does it, like, integrate into IE?
Does anybody have a source for this info? I can't imagine the record companies not throwing a shit fit over this one.
The are throwing a shit fit.
Unfortunately, it's the independents that will be hit the hardest.
It integrates into IE. You also have to download that net passport thing, so I'm assuming it's IE only for the time being. Still, it's worth it just for the convenience.
I've been using the excellent dSHARPiE to set up the metadata for my encodes of The West Wing, and it's been doing a good job of it. I highly recommend it for all your Zune video metadata needs.
Anyway.
I was tagging my files like so: Which I've recently discovered, funnily enough, is incorrect for TV series. The Zune device uses the Video Title tag as the name of the series - so if I want the Zune to group my videos by series name, I'll have to retag everything like so: And I did so, and everything was fine until I noticed that in the episode list, episode 3 was above both episode 1 and 2.
After a bit of digging - it would appear that the Zune doesn't drive the order of the list based on the Episode Title so much as it drives it on the date the video files were created. Also, the Episode Title tag is not exposed in the Zune software, so I've got a whole season's worth of West Wing episodes that I can't distinguish between. Fucking. Retarded. :x
Any ideas as to how I can put them in order? I was thinking I could copy the files elsewhere on my computer, but I'm not really sure as to whether that'll work...
edit: Found a tool - AttributeMagic. That said, I have less of an idea as to what drives episode lists than I had before, as it's not working the way I thought it would. :?
