I loved playing tf2 on penny arcade servers. It was just fun and amusing.

Not necessarily a pet peeve against gaming, more against gamers. Gametags with the following in them:
1) A bunch of xX's before or at the end of their tag.
2) The words "Darth" "Jedi" "Sith".
3) Either "Sniper" or "Assassin".

There is absolutely no need for a mic in agame of L4D or the sequel, at least on normal difficulty (and I played plenty of expert campaigns in the original where nobody in the team had a mic) All that's required is that the team is capable of:
A: Staying together
B: Paying attention
That's it. If mics are so important then don't play a random match.

There was one time I almost got banned from a TF2 server cause I kept taking metal as an demoman from an engineer, and Ididn't have my volume up so I couldn't hear him. The Admin had to type a message for all to see that told me to stop. It was embarrassing.
Point is, I hate when games almost force you to communicate via mic.
I'm not sure if this has been said already, but the goddamn retarded insulting points-buying system. It's a completely shameless, transparant two-fold money-grab.
1) Use arbitrary point values to distance the perceived value of the points from their actual value, i.e. Microsoft's $1 = 80 points. There is absolutely no point in not using multiples of 10 per point other than to hammer home the point that Microsoft knows that consumers are stupid and don't want to do math in their heads and will more willingly buy things that they can't assign a solid dollar value to immediately. At least Nintendo does $1 = 100 points (I don't know what Sony does).
2) Selling points in batches of $10, no less. Nintendo doesn't get let off the hook here. This buying scheme makes it extremely difficult to actually spend all the money you gave them without giving them even more. Let's say you spend $10 (1000 points) on the Nintendo store. You buy a $5 game, 2 $2 items, but nothing that costs $1 interests you. Shit, looks like you're out of luck.
I'd like to add that there is one thing that makes this not so bad. Every couple months there's a random sale going on in which you can get point cards for much less than they're worth.

I have a lot of gripes with the "people" part of games.
Bad gaming communities definitely get on my nerves.
Looking at you, WoW.
Developers/publishers that don't support their game if it has online components and needs balance annoys me.
People who act "pro" but really aren't that good bug me a lot. That attitude defines a scrub in my eyes.
Blind hatred of a game without looking at any of its good points bugs me. The worst of this is fanboys.
People using "fun" as the end-all of game design or whether a game is good or not. The word is ambiguous, subjective, and ultimately demeaning to the medium when it becomes the standard way of rating games.
As for games themselves....
Lack of Metroidvanias. The best genre ever needs more representation.
Of course, random QTE's. God of War did it right by making its QTE's consistent, something that seems to go over most developer's heads.
sewers
"Streamlined" sequels of games that had amazing scope and content. GTAIV and Oblvion come to mind.
MMO design. Take away the players and you get a horrible game. I refuse to to think that the current system of "grind to keep players playing" is the best way of doing things.
Pre-order exclusives based on where you order a game.
See these don't really bother me because they tend to be items that are just horrendously overpowered and take any challenge or fun out of everything but the late game.

Ergo he wants the experience of talking to human beings and interacting with human beings. Seeing as you have already said, you don't necessarily need to do that for L4D, it's obvious that he wants to play games with other human beings for a social reason rather than just for the sake of playing the game itself. "Silent robot" is the clue here. You basically responded to his complaint about people being silent robots with a guide book on how to be a silent robot.

Only a complete masochist would openly invite interaction with the dregs of humanit... I mean pubs. Seriously the signal to noise ration on live has to be what? 1:100? 1:1,000?? Mics are for two things on live:
A) talking to your friends during a game because you don't want to be on the phone with them during the game.
2) spewing racist, profane, bigoted insults at every living breathing thing because you are a total asshole.
Seriously... "meeting people" on xbox live is like looking for a nice girl at a maximum security prison. A MALE maximum security prison.
This is a really new thing, this generation and it really pisses me off no end. Pre-order bonuses that aren't available to everyone. One store will do one particular item as a bonus and the other store will give a completely diffferent item. Its stupid and it only ever pisses off fans, if I pre-order something I want the good stuff but what if the store that offers the best bonus isn't located anywhere near me? Its silly and it needs to go.
The other thing that bothers me is a silly one since it makes sense in the grand scheme of things. DLC. I don't have live and so I lose out on every bonus thing that the rest of you guys get. I get the usual expansion thing a couple months down the line, that makes sense but the aforementioned DLC bonus for pre-orders? BIGGEST BULLSHIT EVER,

I wouldn't give a toss about pre-order bonuses (store-exclusive or not) if they would just put them up as DLC a few months later. As it is, pre-order bonuses are more of a detriment to me buying at any one place because the practice bugs me; shit like that just encourages me to be patient and wait for a price-drop/buy it used off ebay.

That's true to an extent. Yes, playing pub games is a roll of the dice to get some annoying kid or KKK member, but when playing games like L4D in VS or Scavenge mode, it's so much easier to coordinate a strategy with a mic than without one. Every now and then you get a Snake Eyes type of dude (someone with no mic, but knows what's he's doing and is a badass) but it's rare. My roommate and I play and about 65% of the time we get people who are down for the cause. Otherwise we boot them and move on.

It's genuinely irritating to have something re-quoted and bolded closer to the actual response? Okay.
1. Have...have you played L4D2? The bots have serious trouble doing either of those two things.
2. His intended point isn't at all obvious from the original quote, especially with the bolded taken in consideration.
3. The L4D threads have numerous examples of people arguing over this exact same issue of whether it's wrong to play without a mic.
4. I didn't give a guide on any such thing, I pointed out why there's no real need for mics in the example he used.
5. Why do you insist on drawing me into the most pedantic arguments imaginable?

Just to be fair, a point system allows them to be more flexible. They can use points for prizes and such, and points are currency-agnostic, allowing for a simpler back end system that can be used worldwide much easier.

How does the Nintendo store work exactly? Is it accessed from the Wii?
I don't like it when my enjoyment of a game is lessened because I don't have a mic. With my living situation and other outside factors, I can't really talk into a mic while playing games. I love games like L4D though, and I like playing them, but people are always dogging on me for not using a mic. I don't mind the way Nintendo and Sony do it. I can buy 1,000 points, understand that it's $10, and not really give a shit when I have 100 or 3 cents (because Sony prices are all $x.99).
And I understand what MS did, but they didn't go all the way with it. 80 points per dollar seems designed to keep the dumb US consumer from immediately thinking "$15! F that!" when they see a price of 1,500 points but instead everything is still in $ increments giving you dumbass point values for things like Rock Band tracks for 160 points vice 200 or a new arcade release for 800 points instead of 1,000. It always seemed to me that they were trying to fool people into paying $6.25 for things (500 points) but feeling like they were only plunking down $5.00.

I just prefer good conversations/good trash talk. You can trash talk, just make it good. Calling people racist/sexist/biggott names is not necessary. Maybe even apprecaite the opponents skill. If the guy pulls off an awesome counter, admitt it was a good move.
Campaign and team must use communication, and I haven't had a problem in most of those situations. Of course, you don't want to piss off the folks helping you.
1)Squad Mates (AI or other players) who run in front of you while you are shooting or decide it would be a good idea to hang out right in front of the enemy during a firefight.
2)Follow the leader missions or fly in formation missions in flying games.

I don't get that mad at human players doing this in L4D etc., as when you take into account lag etc. you can be running into someone's fire/shooting at someone running past you for a second before anyone realizes what happened.

One of my great gaming joys is just getting into a random match with a classy dude (haven't run into any ladies with mics online, but I'm sure you're out there). General niceties during SFIV matches make the game that much more fun for me. I always make sure to compliment someone's play if I get my socks rocked.
I'm too old to enjoy even light shit-talking anymore.

I've made an effort to compliment someone on something if they do something well. In a Bioshock 2 match today, someone dropped a geyser trap that blasted my straight up, face-first into a rocket turret. That at the very least deserves "Wow, very creative" rather than a barrage of smack-talking put-downs. Agree with you however - I'm only 22 and my gut reaction to smack-talking is just "Shut up and play the game instead."

I just enjoy it when people work as a team. I'm not really there to make friends, but I won't be a dick either. As long as we are working together it's all good. I played a L4D2 match yesterday where the opponents were really good. My friend and I were teamed up with 2 other randoms who were working with us. We were good, but the other team was always a step ahead of us. I enjoy losing like that and can congratulate the players who beat me.
What I can't stand are the guys who won't shut up about you being a noob and how they are better human beings than you because they won. Good example are 1 on 1 games. I learned early on in my XBL gaming not to wear a mic during games like Fight Night where I was drivin into rage at times. In SF4 I recieved plently of hate messages when I would kick the shit out of someone or when they beat me really bad. RARELY would I get a friendly "gg" message. I swear, you get on these games and some gamers feel like they have transformed into the fighter they are using in the game!!

I have to say, DLC that is either on the release disk or announced before a game comes out really boggles my mind. I just don't get the appeal behind most payed DLC anyway.
I never used a mic when I played on xbl and I would get kicked for it all the time, especially in fighting games. Don't know why, or what people expected me to say when I won. They certainly had nothing worth saying to me. Hell, even people I knew personally didn't have mics and we had fun playing together online. It's not a barrier.
But I would get kicked for so many reasons. Like my gt, that got me kicked constantly.
So basically you want to play with people but not really interact with them in a social way.

I don't see what people have problems with XBox Live. I've never encountered any of these racist slur slinging 8 year olds. I once, ONCE encountered someone on Phantasy Star Online who played rap through his mic in the lobby, but that was like 6 or 7 years ago.
I don't get it. Maybe it's just luck on my end, but I find that everyone's in a Party Chat or doesn't have mics. Hell, there was this time in BF: 1945 where I was sniping out on this boat in the middle of the Coral Island bay thingie for a good.... I dunno, Ten minutes? Got like 8 kills. Then I got headshotted. I sent the guy a message.
"Nice shot! "
He sent back a thanks and said he was a Marine. We swapped messages back and forth for a bit, seemed a nice guy.
Six of the eight dudes on my XBlox Live playlist came from random games on F.E.A.R. 2 MP. We were the only ones with mics in our respective games. All of them were polite, well spoken individuals. Not a single screaming 8 year to eb had anywhere....
I dunno, it's probably a case of I don't play titles until a year or two has passed since launch and all the ADD kids have moved on to the next "Halo-Killer."
OH, speaking of.... ANY GAME THAT CALLS ITSELF A 'HALO-KILLER.' What the flying frak?!

I don't mind playing with people who use their brain and are pleasant to talk to.
I loved playing tf2 on penny arcade servers. It was just fun and amusing.
1) A bunch of xX's before or at the end of their tag.
2) The words "Darth" "Jedi" "Sith".
3) Either "Sniper" or "Assassin".
Ugh, just... Ugh.
Really? That doesn't bother me at all.

But seriously, I never care what someones name is. That really bothers you? Why?
There is absolutely no need for a mic in agame of L4D or the sequel, at least on normal difficulty (and I played plenty of expert campaigns in the original where nobody in the team had a mic) All that's required is that the team is capable of:
A: Staying together
B: Paying attention
That's it. If mics are so important then don't play a random match.
So basically you want to play with people but not really interact with them in a social way.
You have completely missed his point champ. It's not about the game at all.
Point is, I hate when games almost force you to communicate via mic.
I'd like to add that there is one thing that makes this not so bad. Every couple months there's a random sale going on in which you can get point cards for much less than they're worth.
It sucks the rest of the year thought.

It's idiosyncratic in my case - I just can't stand it. I could throw out reasons like "Oh everyone has it and it just gets lame to see a load of sniper-assassin names" or "Just because it looks cool in movies/games/television does not make it cool", but eh, it's just an irritance of mine with no real logical foundation. It started when I saw Leon with a friend, and we switched off the DVD player with completely different outlooks on the character: He thought it was awesome to be a hitman, to which I'd argue that it clearly wasn't because he was a pretty miserable bloke. Didn't get through.
I hate it when you start a match and literally nobody is using a mic. Especially team games. You want toplay against silent robots? Go play campaign or against bots or something, but don't go into a team game expecting you can play by yourself.
I think you're the one who's missed the point.
Fair enough.
I use the nick BobtheJedi sometimes. It's a parody of people who put jedi in their name. A jedi called Bob. Think about it. It's such a normal name, Bob.
BobtheJedi.
Yeah.
I have a strange sense of humour sometimes.
<_<
Bad gaming communities definitely get on my nerves.
"Streamlined" sequels of games that had amazing scope and content. GTAIV and Oblvion come to mind.
MMO design. Take away the players and you get a horrible game. I refuse to to think that the current system of "grind to keep players playing" is the best way of doing things.
Aces Wild is a pretty stellar game.
Blog, Playing Rules; Let's Play Demon's Souls; My Backlog
See these don't really bother me because they tend to be items that are just horrendously overpowered and take any challenge or fun out of everything but the late game.
Could you perhaps be less of a silly goose about answering. You quoted the top of the quote tree. You could have just bolded that instead of copy pasting it. It's irritating.
Bots could be programmed to
A. Stay together.
B. Pay attention.
BIGGEST BULLSHIT EVER,
So it doesn't really bother me at all
That's true to an extent.

Bingo. I missed out on some nice shit for Mass Effect 2 because I'm in the UK and don't have the luxury of being able to pre-order at Gamestop.
I just wanna play with the Black Hole gun.
6. Champ.
Morningwood and Ed123 are gonna totally beat each other over a girl in the playground after school, pass it on.
Just to be fair, a point system allows them to be more flexible. They can use points for prizes and such, and points are currency-agnostic, allowing for a simpler back end system that can be used worldwide much easier.
In fact I ban myself from responding to anymore of your posts in this thread.
How does the Nintendo store work exactly? Is it accessed from the Wii?
Stupid rant.
I don't like it when my enjoyment of a game is lessened by having a mic :?
Yeah, the 'channel' for the store is already on your wii, if it's connected to the internet you just click it and bam, wii shopping (after updates obviously).

"Nice shot!
