I'm sitting on skype playing Global Agenda with a buddy and he won't stop complaining about vista minimizing his games every time any background application wants to do anything. I would like him to stop. Is there a setting I can direct him to which makes background applications stop minimizing something running in full screen?
Tell him to stop running things in the background. There used to be tools to deal with this in XP, they don't really work that well anymore, but searching for "vista prevent focus stealing" is the ideal thing to search for. YMMV.
Both me and a friend had these problems on Vista x64 and Win7 x64 respectively. Fullscreen apps just minimized randomly, pretty annoying when playing TF2 and such.
It turns out it was some 64 bit AVGfree issues. We just uninstalled that and et voila!

This. There are plenty of apps that are shittily written. Use Microsoft security essentials instead. it's far less annoying than AVG in the "getting in your road unnecessarily" respect.

Go into Control panels, under User Accounts, and Select the "Turn user control On/Off". Uncheck the box and hit OK.
No more annoying Popups.
Its UAC dude. Nothing should be throwing popups from the backround unless its UAC or its Malware.

Ask him to uncheck the box and test it. Come back with the results.
