Back when the game just opened in 07, my first character was killed at level 6 by that elite warg that wanders chetwood.
Even as recently as 08 -- before MoM -- Unwary was the only title that was pretty much a cinch. That spider cave in Archet was pretty nasty in the old days.
I thought I'd done Othrongroth with all my guys, but my hunter had also managed to get to 22 before doing it (or any of the Old Forest quests); I actually hit 23 inside the instance, and even then finished one fight with only 3 morale left -- I got cocky and took on a sig with his two adds without using traps (the one before the last fight that goes green while calling for the adds, and possibly heals himself like the last guy does). Now, I did lay down a trap for the final fight -- right at whatshisname's feet at the throne there -- the plan being to take down both adds before he got into the mix, but he walked right through it. That fight that got me down only to about half morale, though.
Meanwhile, my RK leapfrogged into the lead, levelling twice in one session and being the first to 24 on Landroval. He and Warden are currently the leading candidates to become my main, slightly ahead of hunter now.
I'm pretty sure that traps are triggered by a mob entering them, not just being in them. So if you drop a trap where a mob spawns, or turns aggroable, it's just a wasted trap.

Looking over the SoM info, and with the revamp on Lone Lands, there is a real possibility I am going to pick this up again.
That said, what do you guys think the next expansion will be (if it's not already announced)? I'm hoping the game makes it long enough to see Mordor and Gondor added to the game. I'd love to ride across the Pelennor Fields and see Minas Tirith rising up in front of me.
All signs point to Rohan for the next big expansion. Next book will move the focus north of Mirkwood and back to Eriador to recruit the Ranger's aid in Aragorn's battle in the east.

Rohan would make sense...here's to hoping after Rohan we get Gondor/Mordor (which I assume will go in as one expansion, you can't really separate the two story wise).

I kind of thought that might be the case -- after it failed, of course, not before. That would also explain a similar encounter in the barrow downs with the spawned sig mob to get the shade's ring. I guess I could've run through to pull him back into it (the trap was still there after the fight ended), but that particular fight went okay as it was. The first add was a 2-shot kill, and the second about the same, so it was mostly a 1v1 encounter. The main guy's pauses helped burn through some of my cooldowns, so even with his heals, he was toast. I'm still a little puzzled at that earlier encounter in the instance (the sig mob that goes green after getting down to about 1/4 morale and calls in two adds) that brought me down to 3 morale -- I must've taken more critical hits than normal, and/or taken longer to zap the adds. Or maybe I was just overconfident and started the encounter at less than full morale, another distinct possibility.
I'd hate for them to throw the whole rest of the movies in 2 expansions. I hope they're gonna do some other parts of the world first. Dale and the Southern Lands would be awesome to me, but I think Isengard is more likely.
You run into all kinds of lore-related problems, though.
Firstly: wtfhobbits. Sam, Frodo, Merry & Pippin were supposed to special, yet we run into hobbits all over the damned place. Hell, there's a hobbit hunter in the Scuttledells right at the edge of Dol Guldur. Tolkien would not approve of that, I think*.
Secondly: you get into the big battles. Helm's Deep, Minas Tirith and some of "skirmishes" in the movies have more Free Peoples in them than there are on my whole server. If they're going for as much epicness as the books they'll have to come up with some very impressive storylines to pull it off in an agreeable way. I mean, we're deep into Mirkwood at the moment as the Golden Host: together with the elves we form a diversion for the fellowship, we're supposed to be a big army. But what's gonna happen when we reach the really big armies? Do we turn into an elite force sneaking by the big battles to do important background work?
I really hope they're going to expand the world in unbelievable ways, with mounted combat, improvements to what the graphics engine can show (I mean, everything grinds to a halt for me the moment I enter Emyn Lum or 21st Hall, even when there's only a few players there) and countless other things that are going to give me a big erection...
*OK actually the guy hated modern technology anyway, but whatever.
I'm guessing they're going to handle the big fights in a way similar to the movies; lots of generic NPCs fighting generic mobs, while the named characters epically taking down a small horde on their own, making their way to the boss. Given Turbine's history of trying things out in small scales or modified forms before major changes, I'd say that the Mirkwood expedition was a step in that direction.

This would be my assumption as well. You'll make the "elite" forces of the army, but the majority of the armies will be AI driven NPC's fighting each other, mostly as a back drop to the things you're doing. Like killing a Mûmak.

1. Was that first bit (in bold) regarding my close call with my hunter, or something else on this thread? The more I think about it, the more I think I just didn't rest up before that fight...
2. I'm not so concerned about their "using up" all of the movie material too quickly -- they did include Tom Bombadil, who didn't even appear in the movie, and probably other stuff that didn't make it into the movie... hmmm... you know, I did read The Hobbit several years ago, but I'm thinking now that I never did read the LotR books themselves. Bad Glornt!
3. A few years ago I played a text-based MUD (Genesis) that had a Middle Earth area, along with areas from Dragonlance, Earthsea, and a couple of original areas. When I saw the LotR movies, I was amazed at how closely Minas Tirith in particular matched what I had imagined just from the Genesis descriptions. Did anyone else here ever play that game?

Why are you guys even talking about the movies? You do realize there were books, and that the game is expressly based on the books, and not the movies, right? In fact, Turbine isn't even allowed to use any of the movie only material, as it's not part of their deal. They are only allowed to use the books, as pure canon. In fact, I don't even think they can sample from things like Untold Stories or the Simirillian, as Christopher Tolkien didn't give his okay.
Minas Tirith doesn't match the description on some text based MUD, it matches the description in the books, almost to a T.

I am pretty sure stuff is referenced from the Simarillion and other stuff every once in a while. It's just not the major focus in any quests because, well, it wouldn't make any sense.

The latter doesn't preclude the former, it merely shows that the designers of that MUD were faithful to the books.
Aldo: Yeah, there are some nasty debuffs in there, but the ones I've noticed have been mainly to might and agility -- which could still be a big deal... every time I've run Othrongroth, I usually wait for the previous encounter's debuffs to expire (usually I have the lvl 20 potions, and these are lvl 21 debuffs) before entering into combat again. It's possible that with my hunter I still had some of those on me when I started the fight that was such a close call.
Fonjo: It doesn't seem to be very active lately; whenever I login, the PA chat channel usually has no more than 3 on (including myself). The most I've seen in the past several weeks has been 5, and I've yet to get any of my characters into the kin; the one time I saw someone offer invites, it was just as I was logging off for the night, and I didn't feel like logging back on at the time. I often don't pay much attention to the chat window, though, so I may have missed some recent bursts of activity...
Alright. Is there anyone here that has founder status? I would not mind having a lower monthly rate to start. If not, I'll just start when I get my CE in the mail. They are going really cheap, it was hard to pass up.

There used to be a thread to ask for a founders referral on the LOTRO forums, I'd try checking there. Thats where I got mine, though I've since lost the pricing since I cancelled for a while.
So I think I'm going to give this game another chance.
The reason is that I just finished reading the Hobbit and am now reading the other set of Books. It has got me increasingly interested to go back and the places actually have meaning.
Now to figure out if I want to play my Loremaster or make a hobbit since the books reversed my hate for them.

Yeah same here. There's a lorebook button by the minimap.
So Codemasters just released that function on the European servers. I'm glad we are slowly moving into the future here. Maybe one day we will have mylotro too.
Yeah, that's been available in the NA version as long as I've been playing. Most of the time I still end up launching a browser to look something up, as I don't find the Lorebook or its search very helpful.
I just don't have much to look up anyway, but I still think it's a fancy feature. Especially for new players it might be a good way to look stuff up without having to rely on a years old manual.
Also: quick access to raid tactics would be awesome. :O

I sometimes keep a browser pointed to Lotro-Wiki.com, but a lot of its information is out of date at least since the introduction of SoM -- for example, something as basic as the entry on the Will stat omits the effect on healing and tactical ratings (when I last checked a week or two ago in trying to decide on virtues to equip).
I'm pretty sure the Lorebook in game was unstable until Mirkwood, but it's been there for quite a while.
And for those of you wondering about founder's pricing (and are in the US), Turbine has in the past run specials where you could get the $30/3mos pricing pretty regularly. The launch anniversary (April? May? I forget) is usually good for that, as is right before an expansion.
Damn it! The itch got to me again. I found myself back at the turbine account website and resubscribed. See you all on Landroval soon. Hope I remember how to play.
Edit: Well, maybe I'll see you all later rather than sooner. I keep getting a 404 error on the launcher when it's trying to update the data.
Since they normalized weapon speed, shouldn't weapons with higher DPS also have higher Damage? The only way I can imagine this not being the case is if you're picking between a 1-handed or 2-handed weapon, and the decision there should be dictated by other factors.

You get a cheaper monthly rate ($9.99), for one thing. However you don't keep that perk if you cancel and then resub.

all weapon speeds per weapon type are equal so it's no longer possible to buy a super slow weapons with high damage.
