January was chock full of great releases, but who “won” the unusually jam-packed month? Well, you might be tempted to say “gamers,” since our plates were full all month long.
But you’d be wrong. Mass Effect 2 definitely won. No question.
According to a report by DFC Intelligence (as posted on Industry Gamers), BioWare’s galaxy-spanning role-player moved 1,100,000 units in January. Its nearest competitor, Army of Two: The 40th Day, tallied up a comparitively miniscule 175,000. Sorry, boys. No fist-bumps today.
The rest of DFC’s estimates (on the Xbox 360) are as follows:
Good lord the PSP looks bad. It has one big US/EUR game this year and a bunch of also rans.
The DS has a Pokemon game or two, whatever the heck Nintendo decides to release later in the year, and the gigantic pile of cult to mid range Japanese crap you come to expect from the little system that could.
Oh and another console revision. Probably another Layton game.

I'm gonna redo the benchmarks. Theres a mistake in there somewhere
Games like UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves are surpassing our lofty expectations as it outsold the franchise’s first PS3 game and is now closing in on three million copies sold worldwide. Over half a million of you have already chosen your allegiance in MAG, and have played over 270,000 games in the Shadow War.
Online shooters are also obviously doomed on the PS3.
In all seriousness how much room can there be for online shooters if CoD is going to come out every Christmas?
Things could change, unlikely though that might be. Everquest used to be King Shit until WoW came out. Something will eventually surpass that (probably WoW2), so CoD won't be on top forever.
Wait, what?
"Something will eventually kill Franchise W Game 1 (probably Franchise W Game 2), so Franchise C won't be on top forever."
Core Games on Wii Continue To Struggle
No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle has scored top reviews averaging a 90 (out of 100) since its release. However, sales came less than 30,000 units for its first week (January 26, 2010 release). Given that the game is more targeted to the traditional core gamers (who tend to be more attached to the Xbox 360 and PS3) this is yet another sign that the Wii is a difficult device for third party publishers to succeed on with M Rated titles. Other titles that have failed to perform despite strong review scores on the Wii include Dead Space: Extraction (ERTS) and MadWorld (Sega). Of course, all three titles did have low marketing budgets, which is likely the wrong strategy to use when attempting to target the Wii consumer, even if you are targeting the “core” market.

Wait, so if MAG didn't hit the top 10, and the number ten spot sold 171k, then how in blue blazes did they get half a million?
And looks like I was wrong about NSMB Wii's closeness to combined MW2.

I remember it charting fairly well in Europe.
True, but well enough to counteract fairly low sales here?

Me thinks that maybe the Sony PR man is talking shipped instead of sold again and carefully choosing his words to cover the fact.

*Cough*
At least someone somewhere with some clout gets it.
Nintendo Wii Leads U.S. Video-Game Sales Lower With 31% Drop
By Adam Satariano and Pavel Alpeyev
Feb. 12 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. sales of Nintendo Co.’s Wii video-game console fell 31 percent in January, pulling industry sales down 13 percent for the month.
Purchases of consoles, games and accessories fell to $1.17 billion, NPD Group Inc. said in an e-mailed statement yesterday. Sales of Sony Corp.’s PlayStation 3 increased 36 percent and Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 rose 7.7 percent, the Port Washington, New York-based researcher said.
Fun fact: Nintendo killed Bloomberg's father and raped his mother!
Unfortunately someone dug up the real first month numbers for NMH1 and it was 60k with only a few more days of accounting. Hmm. I wouldn't put it in the grave exactly but that's not all that promising either.
How the hell did Army of Two: The 40th Day do that well?
It had like no hype
Not-amazing reviews
Heard no good word-of-mouth
The first one was not that good either! It had everything going against it.
Also, XoB pointed out that even though it's not in the game, I maintain that Just Dance did as well as it did by suckering people into thinking that "Just Dance" is, in fact, in the game. It makes absolutely no sense that it's not.
Satisfying month overall, though. Good to see NSMB Wii sitting pretty on top, and Darksiders pulling into the top ten deservedly.
Overall, Wii games claimed half of the top 10 slots. Grabbing two others was Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, driving total Modern Warfare 2 sales in the U.S. to 9.44 million (including 290,000 PC games sold.)

Saving it for the sequel! :P

NMH actually had more hype and (at least in my memory) better marketing, though it was pretty minimal back then too. TvC selling more though is a bit surprising

Sure, but I think you get the gist of what I'm saying.
Lets compare the following to what actually happened. In short, they suck.
The DS has a Pokemon game or two, whatever the heck Nintendo decides to release later in the year, and the gigantic pile of cult to mid range Japanese crap you come to expect from the little system that could.
Oh and another console revision. Probably another Layton game.
Someone pondered that Bayonetta was number 11 and it looks like they were correct.
Guess Capcom has another scapegoat on their hands. Divinity 2 sold similar to Sacred 2. Up to expectations.

No, this song isn't in the game. Probably too expensive. Yes the game is complete garbage...and yet surprisingly fun.
That always gives them a good boost.
Those were just the predictions, not the actuals, right?
Very curious to hear what Dark Void actually did.
There was brief celebration at GAF. Now it's PS3 fanboys saying that ME2 bombed.
Bombed?
It most certainly did not bomb, for only six days it did gangbusters. It might not have beat Mario but hey it's sells were quite damn good.
Bayonetta now that seems to have bombed and can apply to both the 360 and PS3.
Bionic Commando
Dark Void
Anymore?
They must be terrified about Dead Rising 2.
Wait, what?

Psh.
Troll.

They might just be counting demo players.

Wouldn't be the first time they did that.
You know, except for those months where it won.

Also Sheep tells me to tell you guys that he thinks I'm a troll.
Well, honestly I think he's got the facts wrong. I take normal damage from fire and acid and I don't regenerate hit points.
NPD sales. Serious bizness.

I heard that NMH sold about 60k at launch last time. That was released on the 22. The second one was released on the 26.
It's worth a chuckle. If Nintendo is DOOMED, then PS3 sales always suck. It just follows...

Oh and Mario Kart Wii was the only game to show up for both Januarys unless you count Wii Fit+/Wii Fit to be the same game.

And it's interesting that TvC beat NMH2, most people thought it'd be the other way around.
