It's a terrible analogy and it's not surprising that somebody for whom English might not be a primary language mangles it. Especially as it's taken from a larger interview and posted in a fairly transparent attempt to 'score points'.
Everyone comes home, it's a toy, people have got to realize the Wii is a toy, not an entertainment focused product.
See everyone, the Wii is primarily for entertainment, but not focused on it. Or something.

Thats pretty dang harsh... in a way though some of the comments echo's my own personal sentiments.
I feel the Wii is a great secondary system. I know this is not everybody's opinion and i know more than one gamer who only have a Wii and actually play the hell out of it.
Personally though I cant see myself with a Wii as a primary and only system. I'm also having a devil of a time trying to find one to fill out my need for Nintendo console games.
The people that only own the Wii, ask that consumer how often they use their machine. They just don't use it, it was cool, but they're not gamers, so they put it away.
And yet the attach rate is about the same as the PS3 despite being much more back loaded than the other consoles...
Where the fuck does this meme come from? Being less avid doesn't mean they quickly forget about it. People don't talk about real movie viewers and those darn casual movie viewers.

Of Course they do. Go talk to an Oscar snob and you'll get an earful about the moronic general public who buy all these tickets to Michael Bay movies and then don't go see Dramatic, Boring Oscar Winner A.

Mike Capps, head of Epic, doesn’t like Nintendo’s Wii console one bit.
“… First of all, great credit to them,” Capps said of Nintendo in an IGN interview before the Wii bashing began. “The first time I played a videogame with my parents – aging myself a bit – was on Atari 2600. The next time I played a videogame with my parents, 25 years later or whatever, was Wii Tennis. So it's about bringing people together, families, Thanksgiving, all that. I think it's kind of like a weird virus because I have not yet found a reason to play with my Wii since then.
“Zelda I really didn't enjoy on it. They back-fitted the control scheme on it, it was better on the GameCube. Mario, I wish there had been a button instead of wiggle and all that kind of ****. So I haven't played anything that I really wished hadn't been on another platform sadly enough. It's a virus where you buy it and you play it with your friends and they're like, ‘Oh my God that's so cool, I'm gonna go buy it’. So you stop playing it after two months, but they buy it and they stop playing it after two months but they've showed it to someone else who then goes out and buys it and so on. Everyone I know bought one and nobody turns it on. Obviously there's a class of people who really love it and enjoy it and are getting into the games but I'm still waiting for that one game that makes me play it. Who knows, maybe Wii Fit will be it."
I knew I had heard that analogy before. I thought CliffyB said it but whatever. I find this funny considering that they are now making iPhone games.

So Tecmo and Oatmeal Cookie Face have come to an agreement.
Back in mid-2008, you may recall former Team Ninja head Tomonobu Itagaki leaving Tecmo and filing a lawsuit regarding, in his words, a dispute over "unpaid completion bonuses" for Dead of Alive 4 and "unreasonable and disingenuous statements" by Tecmo president Yoshimi Yasuda (who has since left Tecmo).
As of today, the lawsuit has been settled out of court. And Itagaki has supplied 1UP with the below letter explaining his side of the story:
"To Whom It May Concern
Regarding Settlement With Tecmo, Ltd:
I, Tomonobu Itagaki, announce that a settlement was amicably reached on February 26th, 2010 upon a mutual agreement with respect to the lawsuit for remuneration, etc. that I filed against Tecmo, Ltd. claiming the payment of unpaid remuneration, and unpaid wages, and payment of compensation for dismissal, etc.
To All of My Fans:
I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your great help and words of encouragement which have been extended to me so far. I can't hardly wait for the day of announcing my newest work in progress to you all, but I promise you now that I will deliver to you an enjoyable game with depth that surpasses all the games I created before, and is worthy of being world-class entertainment.
As big a jerk as the dude is, Tecmo somehow managed to be bigger jerks to him. So, glad to see that justice has been done and the jerk level can be lowered back to "egotism with mild sexual harassment."
So when he talks about his games having depth, he's talking about cleavages that rival real-world valleys right?

Right but the people complaining about the Wii are big fans of the gaming equivalent of Michael Bay movies, from the big production budgets to the big advertising budget to the demographics and on and on.

The meme implies that there's something wrong with people not using a console for hours on end (for the sake of my statement, more than 2 hours applies) every day of the week. That's the bullshit people take issue with.

So Gaming Snobs have better taste than Oscar snobs... I dunno - I didn't say it was a perfect one to one analogy. Just pointing out that this stuff is in every circle of every interest.

Let me see if I follow this:
-The meme is that Wii-owners don't use the Wii as much as people use other consoles
-You say that's because Wii owners don't play the console for hours on end every day of the week, therefore it's not a bad thing it's not used more.
Did I get that right?
Because it seems like you answered one generic characterization with another (arguably worse and unsupported) generic characterization.
I'm not sure you guys are even clear on what you're criticizing.

Someone should do a breakdown of what professions / lifestyles favor each console (stay-at home parenting vs. college student vs. single person working 9 to 5 vs. etc). So that we can investigate it further, find out how many people with generally more free time on their hands are inflating numbers for whatever portion of that chart up above.
The meme is 'bought it, don't use it' rather than 'bought it, have other shit to do too'. The terms 'collecting dust' and 'paperweight' imply total inactivity.
Shitty pull quotes from ineffective interviews try to push the concept of 'rather be playing the "better" console'. Of course, when people have an agenda to get across, it's not to hard to spin anything for or against.
And I know the games continue to dominate the sales charts
But yet every person I know that owned or owns the Wii has either given up on it and sold it or simply just doesn't use it at all anymore
It's a weird conflict
It's also a fantastic social phenomena that provides more proof that people stick with like-minded individuals and a close group of friends that really make up a very homogeneous group.
Which then we can extrapolate to the adage, it's not what you know but who you know. Or anything else that deals with social circles.
And devs keep falling for it. "everyone I talk to" look buddy, your friends aren't a diverse group and are actually a niche within the overall populace. Learn to actually put yourself in others shoes.

Sure, if taken literally. But I'm not sure why you would do that in this instance.

Am i reading this right?
so for example in june of 2009, just over 11% of 360 owners were active on the console?
And I know the games continue to dominate the sales charts
But yet every person I know that owned or owns the Wii has either given up on it and sold it or simply just doesn't use it at all anymore

anyways. rant off. Sales. Waiting for AvP #s
Do you know what "anecdotal" means? Of course my friends aren't a diverse group and are actually a niche within the overall populace.
I never claimed anything else.
I'm willing to bet those that make similar claims don't either.

Because of where we are.
Fool says foolish thing. People with minimal stake in the outcome take offense and return fire. Pretty soon every thing gets twisted and stretched until it all becomes the extreme example of whatever it was in the first place.
If a developer says they have no interest in developing for a platform, it eventually becomes 'developer hates platform'. If a consumer says they don't play a platform as often as they used to, it eventually becomes 'consumer doesn't play platform at all'.
And everybody does it because they're trying to push their particular agenda. As I said previously, it was a silly thing said by a silly person and used by a silly website to generate hits and views. The follow-on outrage was inevitable.
According to a recent study by casual game developer PopCap, nearly a quarter of internet users play games on social networks -- but the age of those players can differ significantly across regions.
In its "2010 PopCap Social Gaming Research" report, the company found that fully two-thirds of social game players in the United States are 40 years of age or older, while the majority of players in the United Kingdom are under the age of 40.
The ages of 30 to 49 seems to roughly be the transatlantic casual gaming sweet spot. Both nations have at least 40 percent of their social gamers in those ages. And below 30, social game activity in the U.S. tapers off significantly, while the same is true in the U.K. for ages above 49.
Meanwhile, twice as many U.K. twenty-somethings (22 percent of those 22 to 29 years of age) play social games as in the U.S.
Young adults and teens in both countries are the least interested in playing games on sites like Facebook and MySpace: only 9 percent of U.K. casual gamers are 21 years of age or younger, and the proportion is only 4 percent in the States.
The statistics may reflect generational differences in the adoption of certain new communication trends in the two countries. It is possible older internet users in the U.K. have been less receptive to social networking and social gaming -- or that the younger generation in that country has simply picked it up even faster than in the United States.
Some demographics are less variable. The gender breakdown in both countries reflects a somewhat higher proportion of female users, with that imbalance slightly higher in the U.K.: 58 percent of U.K. social gamers are female, versus 54 percent in the U.S.
The Wii makes up a disproportionately "low" amount of overall gaming time.
Granted, there's a lot of exaggeration involved in the meme, but there's certainly some amount of truth to it.
I always forget how much more 360's there are in the US than PS3's. I mean I live in Australia and went to Europe recently and it is the complete opposite.

Anecdotal stuff, mostly
I know the Wii has sold 50-million plus units
And I know the games continue to dominate the sales charts
But yet every person I know that owned or owns the Wii has either given up on it and sold it or simply just doesn't use it at all anymore
It's a weird conflict
Anyway, I guess I'm excited for the 1-2 (3?) punch from Nintendo this year. Don't have a Wii but really, it's about time I had a reason to want one.

It's basically a Guitar Hero/Rock Band controller that doubles as a midi guitar.
I could never, ever see that catching on though

If it came out around the same time as GH/RB were getting huge, at a similar price point, then I think it would have been a big deal.
But not now.
It's use as a midi instrument is pretty nifty though.
