I've been wanting to check out Wild Arms XF as well. I've heard bad things about the traditional Wild Arms RPGs, but a lot of good things about XF.

They'd be wrong. Well, really it depends on personal preference (Some people don't like 4, some 5, some 2). Peoples personal taste influences a lot of the series because they're all pretty different than one another.

Wild Arms 3 is one of the best PS2 RPGs out there though. And has one of the best female leads ever.

So I updated to Gen-D3 in an attempt to see what I've been missing; is anyone else on this FW and still able to buy/play things off of PSN? The demo for Echoshift doesn't run, which is a shame as I want to check that out, and I'm also curious about Patchwork Heroes, but don't want to buy it if it doesn't run.

I'm waiting until I clear Phantasy Star Portable before I pick up Disgaea. A man only has so much time. Although Phantasy Star Portable 2 will probably be released stateside right around the time I finish PSP, so it may be a while. They're definitely on my list, though. Hopefully by the time I get around to playing them the second one will be cheaper on the PSN.

I ran all around trying to pick up a used copy of Phantasy Star Portable yesterday and couldn't find one. I may end up waiting for Portable 2 in the end because it's not too far off.

I ended up picking up Crisis Core instead.

Lunker - echoshift is a total mindfuck. The "cooperate with yourself" gameplay had already been done before by games like Cursor*10, but it's still pretty interesting.

To be honest, I like echochrome much more though. Maybe it's just the way my brain is wired, but I find it much more fun to "visualize" the geometry in echochrome versus working out the sequential steps in echoshift.

Entaru - Phantasy Star Portable is so good. It is pretty hard to find though. I lucked out and scored a used copy in excellent shape for $10 at a local shop. My understanding is that while you can import a character from PSP to PSP2, it doesn't really do anything other than transfer your name (due to the large amount of added physical customization) and change a few lines of dialogue (to refer to you as a member of the organization you work for in PSP), so while it definitely is an awesome game waiting for PSP2 might not be a bad idea (it'll have infrastructure as well).

I still need to check out Crisis Core. I'm not a huge Final Fantasy fan (although I've played through a few of them), but my understanding is that it's a pretty solid game anyway.

Yeah it's not really all that difficult, although it got a bit harder at the end of phase 1, but don't get any funny ideas about wandering off and exploring in other areas. All of a sudden the game decides you die if you do that. I'm just after the second monolith and if you head back to that temple and go right instead of left you are dead if you trigger the mimic or healing spot battle. They'll do like 600 damage in one turn.

I have a hard time paying the $40 they want for Phantasy Star Portable when I know Portable 2 is really pretty close. I'll pick up Portable 2 as soon as it's out though. I miss the old PSO to this day.

As for Crisis Core, It's a pretty neat game. I'm not far into it but the battle system is just fun, it's sort of like a cross between an RPG and a Brawler.

I've started and stopped Crisis Core at least three times; I think it's a fantastic blend of RPG and action game, and I totally recommend playing on Hard. The first mission of the game (Wutai) is pretty brutal, but after that it levels off to fairly manageable; I tried it once on Normal and found everything so crazy easy that it didn't hold my interest. I don't know if CC would hold its own without the allure of FF7, though, so if you're not familiar with the PS1 original, CC might seem really out of left field.

What other games that have come out in the past year or so are recommended? I've been totally out of the scene for so long, but I want to check out a few things. I might splurge on Half-Minute Hero; I liked the demo.

    Yeah, I own Patchwork Heroes.

    Pros
    Great Art Style
Nice evolution of the classic Qix arcade gameplay
Lots of content - multiple difficulty levels, and plenty of levels (both story & bonus challenges)
Fair amount of variety from level to level
    Good music & sound effects
    Nice price

    Cons
User Interface could be better designed (takes longer than it ought to navigate through menus or see your high scores)
Didn't really care for the story
Fun in small doses, but doesn't really hold up to long play sessions IMO.

Overall, I'd recommend it if you enjoyed the demo.

I'm in the same boat (although I should be picking up a PS3 before the end of the month), andf I bought LBP a few days ago. It's pretty awesome so far. I dropped a few bucks on some DLC and the Turbo level pack starts off frustrating as hell and then segues into pure awesome.

I've dicked around a little bit with the level editor as well and although it seems to me like it suffers a little due to the PSP's fewer buttons, it's still very intuitive. There is a pretty exhaustive tutorial, and I was able to cobble together a certain 1-1 and 1-2 (which seem to be the "Hello World" of 2D level editors) after only a few minutes of effort.

Looking at a guide because I wasn't sure if it was some kind of beginner's trap with the starving guy in the worm for Hexyz Force, I've come to the conclusion that the game is total bullshit with its dialogue choices. I think there's a NG+, which is good because odds are every dialogue choice you make with Cecilia is going to be Destruction or Neutral, and sometimes you just have to finish with unconscious teammates because the game will blind side you with a mimic that suddenly does 700 damage and finishing with dead teammates contributes toward destruction. There's a neutral ending and a destruction/creation ending for each character, so that's 5 playthroughs. So I really hope there's NG+.

But seriously, these dialogue choices are total fucking shit. Here's an example, this is what happens when you enter the desert. You see a big sandstorm and the guy runs off ahead. You have no idea where to go, and your choices are to say something like

    1. I don't want to
    2. We'll get lost
    3. I'll get sweaty

Choice 3 is the good option. What the fuck. There's another choice later where you get eaten by a worm, and your choices are something like

    1. I don't care
    2. Is this destiny?
    3. Why did this have to happen to me?!

Again, 3 is the good option. WHY WOULD YOU PICK THE WHINIEST OPTIONS?!

Dracula X. It comes with a copy of Symphony of the Night, so you basically get one of the best classic CastleVanias ever and probably the best MetroidVanias ever in one game.

    My justification:

    - I liked Megaman Powered Up more than Maverick Hunter X (the level editor was an awesome idea).
    - Ultimate Ghosts and Goblins sodomized me sixteen times in the ten minutes I spent with a friend's copy. It looks really good, but I just couldn't handle the difficulty.
    - I have yet to play Hammerin' Hero, but to be fair I've heard it's really good.

If you are down with classic style castlevanias at all go with Dracula X. (Some people can't handle the fact that you can't really control your jump mid air). Maverick Hunter X is good, don't get me wrong, Vile mode is a nice addition, but I liked Dracula X more.

Let me tell you about Demon's Souls....
I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.

My Logitech Playgear Pocket arrived today and it is great. Thanks for the recommendation. I feel like I also need a carrying case though, and I'm wondering if the PSP will be able to fit in a case with the Logitech Playgear already on it. Anyone have any experiences with that? I know having the Playgear and a carrying case at the same time seems a bit overkill but for trips it seems like a decent idea.

So I scored a used Madden PSP 2000 today for $40. The screen has a few light scratches and the metal ring on the back is dinged up, but other than that it's in decent shape. The only downside is that the AC adaptor did not have the portion that plugs into the wall, only the portion that plugs into the PSP. Since it's just a generic figure-8 power cable it's not a big deal though.

I guess with the blue Madden PSPs it's sort of a 50/50 chance as to whether or not they can be modded, so I figure if it can, awesome, I'll drop $20 on a replacement shell online and it will make a nice counterpart to my 3000. If it cannot, then I'll just throw it up on craigslist for $80 and double my money.

I've owned a 2000 before (and a 1000 before that), but seeing both the 2000 and the 3000 running side by side really accentuates how much better the screen is on the 3000. After viewing the new screen, everything looks slightly washed out on the old one, and it was a trip seeing image ghosting again.

Yeah, the 1000 was a beast. I used to have one until I upgraded to the Star Wars white 2000. The one thing I'll give the 1000 is that it feels like an expensive, solid piece of tech; I personally prefer the light, plasticky feel of the 2000, but there is a certain geek-lust sex factor to the solid metal feel of the 1000.
