Guys I've become the weirdest sort of fear junkie. For the past week or so I've been sleeping with my closet door shut and a night light to make sure I'm completely alone in my room. The feeling, for some reason, is addictive. Maybe that's not the right word, but I need some scary stuff.
Things that scared me:
Marble Hornets
Ted the Caver House of Leaves
The Ring (though that was ages ago)
Brainscan (when I was a little kid)
I am more into cerebral stuff. Pop-up scares don't really get me anymore, and gore is not really my thing.
I'm also willing to play survival horror games. I got dead space because it was recommended to me, but it is more tense than scary. I have a 360, a Wii, a PS2, and an oXbox.
Just recommend me whatever stories got into your head and had you looking over your shoulder in your own home.

Have you read Phantoms by Dean Koontz?
It was one of the few books that really freaked me out... though I haven't read it since Highschool so take that as you will.
edit: And just in case you haven't seen these classics, i whole heartedly recommend, Jaws and Alien. You might argue that they are more tense than scary but... for me atleast, the two go hand in hand.

Love those movies, but yeah they are more tense than scary.
Any game in the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series.
I dare you to play it late at night with the lights out and headphones on your first time around.
Just keep in mind it's buggy as hell, but there are mods out there that fix this so it's not so much of a problem anymore.
Somewhere in the Games and Technology forum there is a thread on this game, they'll point you in the right direction. Also some of these mods were made for high end machines and if you only have an adorable little laptop it might not be the best game for you to try, but I'm confident you can find something.
It's a hard game anyways so you'll be saving often.
For all the trouble though, it's totally worth it.

check out three extremes. it's three short films by three different asian "extreme" directors (takashi miike, park chan-wook, and fruit chan) which are each totally different but also completely upsetting. there's an image from the "dumplings" segment that is burned into my brain forever.
And while this was heavily influenced by being on the big-screen, Cloverfield kept me very tense for most of the movie. Nothing scary, but some very unnerving parts (like the helicopter, for instance).

The descent is a bit gorey, but it seems to rely more on creating a sense of dread than pop out scares. There are a couple of pop out scares though.
This reminds me: check out The Descent by Jeff Long. A novel, with nothing to do with the movie of the same name. The first part is absolutely fantastic, and definitely falls into scary territory. It doesn't maintain that level of quality all the way through, but it's still worthwhile - especially for someone looking for scary material.
I got the game Pathologic because it was scary by recommendation. I was not disappointed. Doesn't require a super-computer to play either. It's not translated perfectly, and is somewhat difficult, but the atmosphere is really disturbing at times.
Without a doubt, The Exorcist is the scariest movie I have ever seen, with The Shining a very close second.
One particular scene in The Shining had me so terrified, I was literally petrified with fear and couldn't look away from the screen no matter how much I wanted to.
Read anything by Clive Barker yet? I can personally recommend Weaveworld. I mean, it's just a book, but the horrors he describes are terrifying and the story he tells is very clever and very unsettling.
REC is pretty good stuff. It's got some jumpy bits, but also a generally creepy vibe throughout.
Del Toro did The Devil’s Backbone before Pan's Labyrinth. It's definitely more horror focused, but both are solid movies.
Echoing The Descent. Not your typical people-trapped-in-an-isolated-location movie at all. Very good use of lighting.
And for something completely oddball, Pontypool. The first half is engrossing and sets a perfect vibe and mood, the second half just goes further and further. The ending is something you'll have to decide on yourself.

Seconded. Barker's series of short story collections The Books of Blood is awesome too. His stories are amazingly original, imaginative and disturbing. There are excellent comic book versions of some of the stories as well.
A Tale of Two Sisters is probably the scariest modern horror film.
For something slightly older, check out Ghostwatch (if you can find it) or the 60s versions of Carnival of Souls and The Haunting.
In literature, read MR James. Finest ghost story writer in the history of the genre, and his stuff's easy to find.
Joe Hill's stuff (20th Century Ghosts, Heart-Shaped Box) is worth a look as well.

Man, it's scary half a movie until they reveal the "threat", if it were a study into what happens to people when they're confined and scared it would've been frightening as fuck
No Paranormal Activity yet? Scariest movie I have EVER seen. 6 months later and I still keep the bedroom door closed.
Seconded. I've watched that thing a few times since it came out on blu-ray on top of seeing it in the theater, and it still gives me chills every time. The way they made everything just seem so ordinary, yet so fucked up at the same time is just brilliant.
Man, I'm going through 'Salem's lot for the first time (also happens to be the first King novel I've ever read) and it is freaking me out. I actually jumped when my brother came through the door last night.
It's been mentioned, but I highly recommend Stephen King's older works, if you are ok with reading. Especially The Shining and It. If you have seen Kubricks Shining, the book is ~10x scarier. It, while being super long, is all kinds of disturbing and frightening. Someone also mentioned his short stories, which almost all excellent.
I've also heard that the movie Misery, based on one of Stephen King's books, is also excellent.
Older King, especially IT, which, in my opinion, is one of his greatest. But honestly, one of his newest, Duma Key, freaked me right the fuck out as well.
Also seconding Weaveworld, and the Books of Blood. Midnight Meat Train especially. Barker is able to completely fuck with your mind in a way King can't. They're both scary, but in completely different ways.
Also, anything in the Bring it On series.

IT messed me up. I watched the made for TV movie when I was a kid, and you know what? No big. And no big surprise as it was made for NBC, or whatever network. When I was in highschool though, I broke out the book.
I still have recurring nightmares about that damn clown.
Edit: To put that in perspective, I'm 27. So... that's a lot of years of recurring nightmares over some damn fictional boogeyman.

Definately going to join on the Lovecraft and Clive Barker bandwagon.
For movies I'd recommend Audition
For games I'd say Call of Cthuhlu and Eternal Darkness

I agree. I just about shit my pants during the first underground level. And that was before anything happened.
i'm thinking about it now and it is terrible.

For some reason, I really love this movie.
Its pretty unsettling, in a David Lynch-esque kind of way.
Second. For some reason, this movie scares the bejesus out of me.
Especially if you're used to the jump out and scare you types of movies
And I should have mentioned my pc is broken, so I'm on my brother's age old laptop. So PC games are out of the question.

About ... 30 minutes of that movie are what could be described as scary, unnerving, disturbing, whathaveyou.
The rest is filler and severely brought down the movie for me.
