480i HDTV gaming: PS3 a solution?

I have a 60" 1080p SXRD. Personally, I've found that anything at 480i looks like total ass on it. I immediately went and found component cables for all of my game systems and set them to widescreen and 480p if possible. The games that support 480p over component look great on a big HDTV. Better than on an SDTV imho. The question is, what to do with those older games (or most ps2 games) that don't support 480p.

My question is: have any of you had any success running some of your 480i PS2 games in 480p over HDMI on your PS3? I'm under the impression that the PS3 will automatically de-interlace 480i games when outputting over HDMI. I am also aware that some games don't de-interlace well on the PS3 and that some do. My TV lags on 480i input, so I have to use the gaming mode for those titles, which removes all the image enhancements that make low resolution content look so much better. Here are the games I have or that I plan to get that are in 480i only. If anyone has tested them on the PS3, can you post your experiences?

Clock Tower 3
Final Fantasy XII
Grandia 3
Indigo Prophecy
Kingdom Hearts 2
Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence
Okami
Onimusha 3
Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams
Project Eden
Shadow Hearts: Covenant
Shadow Hearts: From the New World
Silent Hill 2
Silent Hill 3
Silent Hill 4
Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner

Feel free to add games that you have that either do or don't work well on the PS3 (particularly ones that do succesfully convert to 480p and look good). I'll post my findings as soon as I can get these games tested.

I thought the PS3 didn't do anything to PS1 and PS2 games. Maybe I am just thinking about how it does not upscale them.

I don't think the PS3 can do 480i over HDMI (minimum of 480p)... so for those games that don't support progressive scan it has to do some signal processing. From the looks of it, poor signal processing.

Correct. From the OP's list I've only played FFXII and ZOE2 on the PS3, both of which have significant problems on my HDTV regardless of output mode. I can hook up a PS2 and the games look just fine, but on the PS3 even stuff like the rounded edges of static bitmaps (stuff like the Konami logo in ZOE2) have really bad jagged edges.

It can't do 480i over HDMI. It will do 480i over component though, so I think the solution, at least until Sony comes up with a patch for the jaggy problem, is to use component.

I've only tried a handful of PS2 games, but I haven't seen any extreme jagginess.
