Must have X-Box 360 games?

EdictEdict Registered User regular

I just purchased a 360 and have Dirt 2 and Fight Night 4, both of which I really like. What games are considered must haves? I am not a fan of FPS's on consoles. Since I really don't have much age isn't a big deal, anything from original launch titles to current blockbusters are acceptable. I like all types of games so genre isn't a concern either. Thanks for any input.

Brutal Legend will be 20 dollars at Best Buy with a coupon. It's Double Fine's first multiplayer game, and they celebrate by inventing a genre on consoles. There is much more to that game than Jack Black. Kor and I got to talk with Double Fine for writing a multiplayer guide for it.

Dead Rising is fucking sick. I played that for a year nonstop. Very addictive.

Dead Space takes the Resident Evil 4 formula and turns up the horror and intensity that runs circles around Resident Evil 5.

Street Fighter 4 resurrects the 2-d fighter and should not be missed no matter who you are.
Or if you're looking for crazy combos and supers. BlazBlue is the spiritual sequel to Guilty Gear.

If you're zombie minded, I highly suggest Left 4 Dead 2, its getting pretty cheap and a great amount of fun.

Ghostbusters is very fun, and around 20 bucks in a lot of places, well worth it, especially if you're a fan of the movies.

Edit: Doh, i'm silly and didnt see your FPS thing, L4D2 is a shooter, ghostbusters is kind of a 3rd person shooter, sort of.

Are... are you talking about 360 games that aren't on PC, or what? Cause the difference between 360 games that are 360 only and 360 games that are also on PC is huge.

Saint's Row 2 (or Saint's Row 1 first if you want to play a great game and then get blown away by an even greater game) and Crackdown are really fun, and are both 3rd person sandbox games. Saint's Row is a lot like Grand Theft Auto, just less "realistic" with more empathsis on silly fun. In Crackdown, you play a sort of super cop. You can leap over buildings, pick up cars, super punch/explode people, and so on, getting stronger as you progress and use these abilities. There's no real set way or order in how you take on the missions, so you'll never feel annoyed being forced do to a mission you don't want to at the moment.

Also Grand Theft Auto 4, because it's one of the best console games ever made if you have any love for physics and having a good time.

The Gears of War games are a lot of fun.

Dead or Alive 4 and Soul Calibur IV are both enjoyable if you like 3D fighters. The former also has true 4-player support.

Forza 3 is an excellent racing game, albeit with a steep learning curve.

Tales of Vesperia is an excellent, (I feel) challenging, and really goddamn long JRPG which manages to avoid many of the less popular features of JRPGs.

Dead Space is an excellent third-person horror game. If you don't like third person shooters either, though, skip it. Stranglehold is available cheap, features Chow Yun Fat and John Woo, and a lot of fun as another third person shooter.

Burnout Paradise. It's dirt cheap and has tonnes of content. And it's the best racing game you could possibly get. Arcade racing game anyway.

Darksiders is a great action/adventure title that's like a more mature Zelda. You could also look into Fable 2 but I didn't find it particularly good.

RPG world has Oblivion, which whilst not as good as Morrowind (IMO ofcourse), still kicks all kinds of ass. It's on the PC too though and that version is much better simply because you can mod the goose out of it.

Other action titles are stuff like Spiderman web of shadows and Mirror's Edge. ME does have guns and it is first person but it's heavily focused on platforming and does a darn fine job of it. Spider-man WoS is, IMO, much better than any of the previous Spidey games and it's lengthy too.

There's also Assassin's creed 2 which can be had for cheap now I reckon. It's fantastic and you'll enjoy every second of it. Confusing story though.

And that last game I mentioned reminds me of my favourite game of last year; Batman: Arkham Asylum. Seriously, if you get one game for your console, make it this. You feel so badass as Batman and the graphics are so good too.

Shadow Complex - Great Arcade game. Worth more than the 15$ cost. Metroid homage. Must buy.

Assassin's Creed II - And skip the first. Best of 2009. Read a synopsis of first game.

Batman: Arkham Asylum - Best game of 2009. Don't use batmanvision all the time.

Brutal Legend - Skip, unless you enjoy poorly controlled RTS.

Crackdown - Cheap, sequel coming soon. Fun sandbox action game.

Lost Planet - Cheap, sequel coming soon. Controls are iffy.

Dead Rising - Rent, sequel coming soon. Game is sometimes hard to get into.

Mirror's Edge - First persion platforming. Very cheap.

Resident Evil 5 - Game becomes much better with a friend. Avoid otherwise.

Fable II - Fun, arcady RPG. Good amount of DLC. Sequel coming this year as well.

Forza Motorsport III - Best driving sim on 360. Better than Gran Turismo.

Borderlands - You don't like console FPS, but the PC matchmaking with Gamespy is horrendous, so it's cool!

Burnout Paradise - Best driving arcade on 360. Very well supported with paid and free dlc

Saints Row series - GTA, but actually fun. Cheap.

Red Faction Guerrilla - Sandbox destruction. Very cheap. Good amount of DLC.

Eternal Sonata - Slow, cinematic, peaceful RPG. with chopin

Tales of Vesperia - Excellent JRPG

Gears of War 1 & 2 - Fairly cheap, loads of fun on coop.

The Darkness - Dirt cheap, made by Chronicles of Riddick duders

Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Dark Athena - Basically 2 games for the price of 40$. Great deal, good games.

Halo Wars - Simplified RTS. Fairly fun.

Ninja Gaiden 2 - Hard game, very hard game.

Halo - You may hate console shooters, but they're pretty cool.

Viva Pinata -Trouble in Paradise - Chill the fuck out games. With pinatas and shit. Very Cheap.

Banjo Kazooie - Nuts and Bolts - Fun, creative, puzzle game. Very cheap.

Dead Space - Best action horror you'll see.

    Darksiders - Zelda, but good.

Bayonetta - Devil May Cry, but good.

    Mass Effect 1 & 2 - If your PC can't handle them.

Splinter Cell: Conviction - Keep an eye out for this in April.

Alan Wake - Max Payne developers at work. Out in May. Very cinematic.

Bionic Commando - Rearmed: Old skool

Geometry Wars Evolved 2 - Intense shmup with good music

Castle Crashers - Fun with friends. Hack 'n Slash.

Braid - Puzzle game with art and an enjoyment of being pretensious.

Also, not detailing what other consoles/sytems you have or if you're looking for 360 exclusives/best versions is pretty dumb.

Mass Effect 1 & 2 are great, i prefer them on PC, but i prefer every game on PC....i just own a 360 for the exclusives really.

    Assassin's Creed 1 & 2 (Especially 2.) Grand Theft Auto IV.

    A few I haven't seen mentioned yet...

Ace Combat 6 - Awesome flying action. Shit story, but skip all that stupid shit and get back to shooting down planes.

The Club - I know you don't like FPS on the consoles much, but this is a third-person shooter with a bit of an arcadey twist. You get combo and accuracy multipliers and rack up points for kills... reminds me of other SEGA titles like Sonic where you compete with yourself for higher scores. Good fun.

Project Sylpheed - You like Wing Commander/Freespace? Why don't you already own this?

Prototype - Spiritual successor to Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction. You can jump-kick a helicopter. That's really all you should need to know.

Pure - Think SSX on ATVs. Haven't played the SSX games? Guess you need to buy a PS2, as well...

    XBLA

Splosion Man - Platformer where you blow yourself up to jump, and when you blow up humans they turn into pieces of meat. Real meat. Awesome fun.

    Castle Crashers - 4-player beat-em-up/RPG. Good stuff.

Catan - port of a great board game.

Carcassonne - Port of another great board game.. tile game.. whatever.

Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2 should be at the top of your list, cause they're really good games. ME2 is better than ME1 but you need to play ME1 first to get the savefile and get into the galactic adventure and make decisions and set events into motion to reap the rewards in ME2.

ME2 is soooo so good. It's really damn sexy. All those asari strippers... oh man. And then you upgrade your guns and armor and you look good cause the camo's customized and the voice acting's really good and... and...

I dunno, I think it's an amazing game. Feels about as good and refined as Gears of War 2. Honestly... after playing a few setpieces... I actually think the combat's a lot more fun then Gears of War 2. Which is generally regarded as the pinnacle of third person shooters. But Gears of War 2 didn't have you using different ammo mods and biotic abilities or combos with an ally's biotics and uh... it just all comes together as something so much better and much more satisfying then a normal third person shooter. When you've got this amazing first-rate third person shooter combat, and then couple it with BioWare's traditionally stellar RPG mechanics... well, you've got one of the finest games ever crafted, I think.

Frankly, ME2 makes ME1 look really bad, even though I really enjoyed ME1. The combat is just soooo much smoother and more responsive. No more collecting 15 rifles and vendor trashing 14 of em. No more worrying about hitting that 150 item limit.

Mass Effect 2 is probably one of the best games ever made. Like, you'll want to play it over and over again. Cause I have, and I never replay singleplayer campaigns. It's really lame replaying a story, cause you already know how it ends and all that. But ME2 is so fun and the gameplay is so rich and satisfying that it doesn't matter. You need to experience this masterpiece. It is phenomenal craftsmanship. Food tastes bland now. Porn doesn't look as hot. I still download it, but it's not the same, man. You need to get this game.

Do not listen to this. AC 1 is far from being "shit awful". It isn't as good as ACII but it is far from terrible. It's got great graphics, a highly detailed open world and a fairly competent story. It can be a little repetitive but its a pretty decent game. The gameplay is very good and is the basis for the gameplay in ACII, which kind of makes me think the above guy had never even played it. You can also get it on the cheap now as well, you could do a lot worse for $10-$20.

The point is not that AC1 is bad. Just that, AC2 offers everything it does and more. AC1 just isn't good enough to justify playing it when AC2 is around.

Just because AC2 is better doesn't mean AC1 is automatically horrible because of it. It's less than half the price of AC2 and i thought the plot was good enough, and it's the precursor to AC2 plot wise. The games are almost episodic in their story.

Read around, look at reviews, decide for yourself. But i honestly dont know what game these guys were playing that keep talking like it was the worst game ever, because it definitely isn't AC1. While not perfect, it's definitely not horrible in any way shape or form. The missions get a bit repetitive sometimes, but that's pretty much the only major gripe i can think of with the game.
