So I just bought
this off of Ebay. I have no idea what games are on those 113 disks, but I'm looking for recommendations for some of the greatest C64 games of all time (it's been a few years since I've owned one) to try and track down for my new baby. Definitely finding Below The Root and Alice In Wonderland along with all the Ultimas right off the bat.
Help.

To name a few.
I'll probably keep remembering shit I used to play and update this.
Ah, the Apshai series. I remember having to read the books for the room descriptions.
:^: @this list
There is also a sequel to Impossible Mission that was good. I think the C64 got a port of Karateka, that was fun if memory serves. And Loderunner.
Didn't one of the Impossible Missions have a bug making it unbeatable?
Karateka was great. I need to find that for the Apple IIc I'm buying.
Also, remember Infiltrator?
CARRIER COMMAND
CARRIER COMMAND
Bruce Lee: An action-platformer where you controlled Bruce Lee (duh), or alternately, you can control some furry looking character that resembeled Chewbacca to me. Punching and kicking is standard fare for this game, but you could also shimmy across different gaps. Decent game.
Potty Pidgeon: The name says it all. I don't know if this was a homebrew game or what, but you controlled a bird in the sky and your main goal was to take shits on the cars below, thus "destroying" them. Fun while it lasted.
Congo Bongo: Classic isometric game where you run around collecting red gems. Memory is a little fuzzy on this one.
Back to the Future: Yes, there was a Back to the Future game on the commodore. Again, fuzzy memory on this one, but I think I remember it playing similarly to Double Dragon.
Jumpman, Boulderdash, Karateka: All classics that everyone should have played by now. Jumpman is notable for most likeley spawning today's modern platformer.
Friday the 13th: Little is known about this game, other than it is played from an overhead perspective and you have a bow and arrow.
Bards Tale, Legend of Kage: These game disks did not work for me, so thus I have no memory of them.
Nick Faldo Golf: My dad played this one a lot. It's....golf. I think from more of a Links perspective.
Spies Demise: I've never played this, but my dad claims it is his favorite game of all time, and he cannot find it anywhere anymore today.
Jeopardy: You're standard Jeopardy game.
Pitstop 1 & 2
Annihilator
One Man and His Droid.
Awesomely awesometastic.
most of all, most of all
someone said true love was dead
but i'm bound to fall
bound to fall for you
oh what can i do
Other games I liked:
Archon
Summer/Winter/California Games
Jumpman
Leaderboard Golf
F-15 Strike Eagle
Skyfox
Some air combat game whose name I can't remember where one person flew the plane and the other person controlled the weapons that my brother and I loved to play
Beach Head
Space Taxi
Some weird German porn games that my dad had hidden in the back of the box with his business disks
Edit: Holy shit, Karateka. How could I forget Karateka?
I'm going to pretend you didn't ask that question. Close the door on the way out behind you.
Tai Pan.
Mondo's Fight palace.
Kickstart (the original excitebike)
Rampage
Wizard of Id Typing/Math game. (I played the shit out of this game, and maybe even learned from it too)
there was a great music proggy named songwriter or songbird or something, that was fantastic.
there were also a couple great cart games (plugged into the back on the commodore, no disk)
Battle Tanks, or Tank Wars or whatever that was called.
Jumpman was also a favorite of mine.
oh oh and California Games (I'll never hear "Louie Louie" without thinking of this game anymore)
I miss those days =0

Wow, yes. I remember when we had it, my dad kept a piece of notebook paper by the computer with a bunch of instructions like that on it that you had to type in to play a game. I remember a few years later when I dug the thing out of the closet, I couldn't find that paper (and Internet was nonexistent yet), so I wasn't able to play any games at all.
Meiz, :^: to army moves. Took me nearly 20 years to find out the music was 'Colonel Bogey March'.
I'll be doing a lot of that with those 113 disks I can imagine.
Bungling Bay
Wizball
Dropzone
Paradroid
Turrican (& Turrican 2)
Rainbow Islands
The Eidolon (get the disk version - the cassette will send you mad)
Skate or Die (ditto)
Rescue on Fractralus (sp?) - It'll make you jump.
International Karate Plus
Myth (hard)
SNARE (v. hard)
Mercenary
Hawkeye
Pathfinder
Shoot em up Construction Kit (exactly what it says on the tin)
Plus all of the Games Series (California & World esp.)
These are all UK games, so don't know if the US versions are a) any good (apparently some US versions are completely different games), & b) even available. Also, I haven't played any of these for over 15 years, so who knows if they will stand the test of time.
Finally - games that are worth it for the music alone :
Turbo Outrun
I-Ball
Friday the 13th is possibly the worst game of all time - get Forbidden Forest instead.
There's not only a Back to the Future game, but also a Back to the Future 2 & 3 - I remember #2 had a puzzle bit where you had to avoid meeting other versions of yourself.

Also pick up some of the Epyx and Imagine games collections if you can find them. I played them to death when I was younger. Literally in some cases: the tapes died.
I had an Imagine games collection with: Arcadia, BC Bill, Pedro, Jumping Jack, and Cosmic Cruiser that ate up more of my life that I would be willing to admit (BC Bill even ended up as my PA avatar). All of those games are recommended, despite their simplicity.
I also had an Epyx game collection with: Impossible Mission, Pitstop II, Summer Games, Fire One, Starfire, and a few others. These are all highly recommended too, especially the first three.
I'd also recommend:
Firetrap
River Raid
The Last Ninja series
International Karate+
Green Beret
M.U.L.E
Galactic Games
And Labyrinth, if you liked the movie.
The C64 is really a great machine. You make me want to go dig mine out of the cupboard now, and stick the Leaderboard Golf game in. I loved the way you often ended up stranded on little islands.
POKE 53280, 11
POKE 53281, 6
My dad went absolutely bananas for this game. I too must admit that it was pretty fun for it's time.
I always wanted to play the Labyrinth game but couldn't find it as a kid for some reason.
I remember playing that in the arcade.
Amen to the extreme.
Street Beat was hella fun. Dr. Destructo. Boot Camp if you hate yourself or your wrist joints. Such a long time since I've seen the old C64.
Dear God Yes. I can't even put into words how much I loved that game.
BTW, for those that mentioned it, there was a C64 version of Yie Ar Kung Fu???
Also, BC Quest for Tires...awesome game.
Fuck, now I need a C64.
I was thinking the same thing and popped onto Ebay and that auction I bought had 37 seconds left. That was a sign from God.
I had BC on cartridge back in the day.
That reminds me. I need to find a Fast Load cartridge and some joysticks...
Yeah, it's a great game. It was released a bit late in the life of the C64 to be very popular, but it pushed the hardware to its limits, and was really fun.
It's amazing that such a great game was released 11 years after the C64 launch, and it was fantastic that it took advantage of graphical "features" in the VIC chip that hadn't been exploited by anyone (other than the demo scene) up until then.
Here's an awesome remix of the music by Press Play on Tape.
Great music, that game had.
