Hey all, I bought this game the other day and I'm really liking it so far. Yeah, it's not X-Wing or TIE Fighter, but it's a decent quality "lite" space sim.
My Japanese isn't that great so I can't really understand the story, although the space battle cinematics are beautiful to behold, but I was wondering if anyone out there had translations for the various menus and what-not. I've pretty much figured everything out except for the wingman commands.
It's frustrating that a game that has so much English in it still has Japanese for other things. It's pretty random what's in English and what's not. I would imagine that Japanese people who aren't that good at English have the same complaint except from the other side.
I checked gamefaqs but as of yet, there aren't any guides out there.
Anyone know of any? Thanks!

I don't know of any guides, sorry.. but you need to give us more. What are the controls like? Does it have Newtonian physics, or Wing Commander style? Difficulty?
Ok, I'm not really good about writing impressions of a game, but I'll give it a shot. I'm at work now and don't have the game or the manual in front of me so I apologize if this isn't all that in-depth.
I'm not exactly sure what Newtonian physics refers to. I think it might be "do you still move when there is no acceleration?" and I'm pretty sure the answer is no.
The controls are pretty similar to the Wing Commander style. Right trigger accelerates, left trigger brakes, both triggers at the same time matches speed to your target, two quick pulls on the right trigger uses your afterburners, and two quick pulls on the left does a power break.
Using either the afterburner or the power break uses up energy from your shields, which recharges but takes a while.
Left analog stick controls ship motion, right stick changes camera angle around your ship. Holding Y and moving left/right on the left stick revolves your ship in a circle but keeps you on the same heading. Holding the right trigger and pushing left/right on the left analog stick puts you in a power spin which is used to evade missles, but again, it uses up shield energy.
Your ship has both shields and armor. When you get hit, your shields take damage and recharge slowly, but if you get hit enough, you will permanently lose shield power. Once your shields are gone, you can still fly around, but you're pretty much toast with just your ship armor.
The radar system is pretty standard for a game like this. Different colored dots representing allies, enemies, current target, etc... What's nice is that there is an arrow that moves around the screen that points you in the direction of the ship you have targeted. You can change targets anytime you want, but once you kill your target, the game automatically targets the closest enemy to you.
There are lots of different weapons in the game, I haven't really tried out that many except for the ones you start out with, standard guns and missles. What's cool is that once you target a ship, on the HUD it has a distance meter that shows you where you are in relationship to your target, as well as a cone that shows you if the target is in range of your weapons.
Also like Wing Commander, once your target is in range of your weapons, a 2nd circle appears near it, a leading circle, which tells you where the ship is going to be.
The graphics are beautiful and I've experienced no noticeable slowdown despite the fact that there are always tons of ships, lasers and things going on, on the screen. It's awesome shooting multiple missles at a target and seeing them scream off, like something out of Macross Plus.
The D-Pad controls your wingmen, if you have any on the mission, which is the only thing I'm having trouble figuring out.
Another thing I really like is the sense of scale in the game. The capital ships are HUGE compared to your fighter, and it's really awesome to skim across the hull of a large ship, like you could do in X-Wing or TIE Fighter.
Let me know if there's anything else you want to know about. Overall, I would give the game a solid 80-85%. I can't tell you that much about the story since I don't understand it, but it looks like your typical anime space saga with the quiet young pilot called upon to save the galaxy with the usual cast of stereotypical sidekicks, the loudmouth guy, the love interest girl, the supercool/mysterious instructor, etc...
And as I wrote in the first post, the space battle cinematics are awesome.
Yes, the game is region locked. I live in Japan so I have a Japanese 360.
No official word yet if it's going to be coming to the states, but if it does, I would be seriously tempted to buy the US version (or the Asia one, for that matter) so I could understand the story.

I mentioned in another thread too, as of now Squeenix has absolutely no desire to bring Sylph to the states. I don't know why, but I'd assume lack of sales would be the top reason (and they'd be right, I'm sure).

That is interesting because it is pretty impossible to make a profit from the tiny install base of 360s in Japan right now. If every single person who owns a 360 there bought a copy that is like 200,000? Developers almost have to release in the states if they want any chance of making money. I am sure we will see this sooner or later.
It would be a shame if this game was never brought to the states.
Playing this game reminds me a lot of the Colony Wars games for the original Playstation. They were a lot of fun and were reviewed pretty favorably. It's a shame that Sony gave up on the IP and never made any sequels for the PS2.
If anyone at Sony is reading this: COLONY WARS FOR THE PS3!!!
I guess anime space sim doesn't fit the shooters lol US demographic.
Well, considering that they probably won't sell enough copies in Japan to recoup the development costs, you figured they'd at least give it a chance in the US. I mean, seriously, are they expecting Japanese dudes to buy it twice?
I don't usually buy Japanese language games, so I don't know if this is a common occurrence or not, but the thing that I don't understand, and that bugs me the most about this game, is that some things are in English and others are in Japanese, and I can see no logic or reason behind the decision.
For example: All the wingmen commands are in Japanese, which I don't understand that well, and is pretty important. On the other hand, all the designations on the radar are in English. Also, all the warning messages: shields/armor low, missile lock, etc are also all in English.
You'd think that since this is a Japanese game, everything would be in Japanese. What pisses me off is that they went half-way and put a lot of the in-game text in English, why not go all the way and put everything in English or have an English subtitles option?

Then they would have to spend money to localize it, which would cost them even more.
Also, You never know about the buying it twice thing. "Browncoats" AKA really stupid Firefly fans have been known to buy tens of copies of Firefly and Serenity DVDs in hopes it will make the show come back somehow.
EDIT: Also, any screenshots? This sounds kinda neat, I like space combat.
Im pretty sure its up to the developer whether to region lock or not but most good games that don't come to America seem to be locked such as this one.
No problem, I've been excited about this game for a long time. I'm glad to hear its good from someones who's played it and that it seems relatively import friendly if you don't mind missing the story.
I knew I should have imported the Blue Dragon 360 pack.

Was it developed by GameArts? Because that's who immediately comes to mind when I think Silpheed... I guess this could be an entirely different thing though.
While looking around the net for a guide of some sort for the game, I came across this review from GameScience. It's much more in-depth than what I wrote above, so I thought I'd share. Generally, I agree with the reviewer on all counts. Enjoy!

Just throwing that out there.

Totally inexplicable. I was looking forward to Sylpheed stateside. I guess 10 million potential customers isn't worth the localization.

But later...
Steam ID : rwb36, Twitter : Werezompire,
As you can see, a lot of the in game text is in English, but not all of it, unfortunately.
Anyone know of any Uk sites/stores that are selling Jap 360's?
I knew I should have imported the Blue Dragon 360 pack.

Hmm, the original game for the Apple IIgs is abandonware now.
Because we just got a date in July for US release! =D
