Hurray? So today is Ash Wednesday for those crazy Christians out there, signalling the start of the Lenten season, which means getting dirt on your forehead and fasting on Fridays and giving something up for lent and yadda yadda. Lent is a time leading up to Easter, which is an underrated holiday involving the Easter bunny coming to life to take down Satan and leave chocolates for good boys and girls or something. Just curious if any of you sinners are gonna be giving up anything for lent. I'm giving up sodas, which will be tough because I love sprite and orange soda. Catholicism is kinda cuckoo about some things, but the basic idea are decent enough in my book. Jesus was a supercool dude. I'm more of an ala carte catholic anyway. If you're not religious, that's cool too! As long as it works for you. So yeah dudes, let's get holy!
I LOVE GIVING UP SHIT. I'm not catholic and sometimes I worry that true catholics would be offended that I really like lent but don't consider myself catholic, but dang I love giving shit up. I don't know what to give up this year, maybe pizza? That would be incredibly difficult for me.
I ate so many pancakes last night. Lent is awesome because before it you have to stuff yourself silly with batter, sugar and lemon.
Man so jealous of you English peeps for having a day dedicated to pancakes. I want Pancake Tuesday! And Bacon Monday!
It's not government mandated - you could've had your own shrove Tuesday.
The only pan we have that's good enough for pancakes is about 8" across, so we ended up making pancakes the size of your American things, but as thin as a crepe. It was 3 mouthfuls of awesome before having to make another.
SporkAndrew on
The one about the fucking space hairdresser and the cowboy. He's got a tinfoil pal and a pedal bin
I am interested in which denominations besides Catholics really observe Lent and ash wednesday. I know that Baptists don't (or usually don't).
Lutherans do, mostly because it's an excuse for another potluck
There are a pretty fair number of baptists/baptist-a-likes who do Lent by personal choice, not because it is mandated. My sister generally does it and I've done it a few times. I haven't decided yet about this year (which I guess I should, time's a-wasting)

It's down in Fairfax, so a bit further south than DC, but it is a fantastic shop and less than a mile from me.
