Star Trek has a very strange obsession with Nazis.
So does the DC universe, and a lot of other popular media. Nazis are fun to throw into anything these days as a laugh or to look serious/evil/we want to kick Hitler in the nuts.
They've been timetraveling and fighting Nazis/aliens pretending to be Nazis for 44 years now. You'd figure that maybe they'd give Stalin a kick or two.
Anyone else notice the server a little weird tonight? Loading screens are taking almost 5 minutes, lots of rubber-banding, a strange sort of latency now and then, and more bugs than I remember ever seeing. I guess it is the first Friday night after the S2 launch so they're probly loaded down, but still. My fiance and I had to give up playing for a while out of sheer frustration (a 20-minute mission refuses to turn in, and we couldn't loot anything for the last half of it.
Just for a kick in the teeth, it wouldn't even let us log out properly, the game crashed when we hit exit. /grrr
I stopped playing this game after the first month, and was thinking of trying again with all the new stuff, but you're telling me that they're STILL having major lag and connection problems with this game?
Is this on a regular basis or have they ironed most of the problems out?
So, how much has this game changed for the better since Beta? I played the Beta right up until launch and decided not to get it since it was just too monotonous. I hear the ground combat still sucks, but how much have they done to change it, mainly mission variety wise? Thinking about picking it up now that it's only $20.

Well, there's still the monotony, but now there's New Monotony!
Actually, it's the diplomacy missions. Having to actually talk to NPCs and figuring out what they want and how to give it to them.
Remember one of the earlier missions where you had to talk to the mining community in the early part of the game? There's now more missions like that and a different experience tree to level up in (Diplomacy XP).

I hope that isn't a really good example, because that mining colony mission was idiotic.

Best I could come up with. I've been mostly blasting things in my cruiser anyway.
Glorious Auto-Fire!
Man, I stopped playing just before they introduced respecs and have no idea what to do now. I have an engineer at 44 but am probably using all the wrong equipment/skills

The new missions also make use of the diplomacy system.
At the end of The Return you can
Choose to let the Romulans go, take the Borg tech, or destroy the Romulan ship
What do you alters how the mission ends, and what you have to fight. Taking the middle option also apparently reveals
What's likely to become the first actual raid content of the game. An Iconian ship finally shows up outside of Iconian space and blows the utter shit up out of an armada of Borg cubes that you were fighting (And possibly losing, depending on your ship equipment.), making the Undine look like pansies by comparison.
It then sends you an ominous "Yeah, we're awesome" message, before warping out.
Much pants shitting goes down in the mission debriefing after that.
This is pretty easy, wonder if i could let them do it alone.
You what? Bring it!
...So.. i get to kill em then at some point?
Also, if how they fought the borg is any indication. Yet another later level foe who makes shields utterly worthless. Which puts us three for three so far.

The notable thing is that they fucked up the Borg's shields. Later high end Borg (Like the Tactical Cube), have some beastly shields that a group of ships have to sustain fire on one side to take down. And even then, they'll just come back up in short order. Current Federation and Klingon ships are nowhere near the high end Borg's level of shield capacity.
It chewed through two cubes shields like they weren't even there, and (in my case) four shotted a Cube's hull once the shields went down.
On that note, i'm dreading the day that the STO developers add in the Tactical Fusion Cube as a boss. Not only would it be the size of a planet, nearly, it would probably be able to chew through entire armada's of ships like they weren't even there.
Of course, in order for that to happen they'd probably have to add in Fusion Cubes as well, first. Which would be a nightmare all to itself.

I can but hope. Honestly something inside me kinda dies everytime my singular star cruiser turns a cube into so much space dust. Those things should be scary but even on elite it's more a case of.
1. Spam Hazard emiters so i have shields.
2. Shoot incoming heavy plasma torps.
3. Grind it down.
Rince and repeat. I can but assume it's likely even easier for escorts as they'll burn through much faster.
something like a tactical fusion cube to make me go "Oh god!" would honestly be awesome. It's a shame that the borg are more scary on the ground than in space.

To be fair, the few situations where we're genuinely put up against a Borg fleet where they're not handicapped in some way generally ends in lots of players being slaughtered.
The Khitomer Accord mission, and Infection space portion of the TS are good examples. Especially Khitomer Accord, where there's so many Borg, and they're so powerful, most of them just ignore you and bee-line to their objective, since you can't kill them all fast enough without a clear-cut plan of attack before-hand.
That Return mission is a good example of being saved by deus ex machina too. Had the thing-that-shall-not-be-named-outside-spoilers not appeared, the position and number of Cubes meant that they would have utterly ruined your shit if you weren't in a cruiser with (what was previously) max level epics.
The easiest place to see what the Borg are made of is in the (often ignored) Borg DSE's. The Borg, if they get the right group composition (Read: More then one cube.) will systematically tractor a ship, strip it's shields, then utterly obliterate it before moving on to the next one.

You get the same if you tell the Romulans you can't let them leave... I'm not sure the ending is actually any different on the three choices.

I just encountered a pretty good Diplomatic mission. Quarantine that starts at Memory Alpha.
I don't know what it is, but whenever I play an MMO I just want to rush-rush-rush, even though I know there's a semi-decent story underneath (I feel CoX is the same way). So I'm really taking an effort to slow down and enjoy these. Helps that I solo a lot though.
Didn't see this mentioned already. Free weekend for all past and present subscribers.
Greetings, Captain!
Season Two: Ancient Enemies, our latest content update to Star Trek Online, is now available to everyone at absolutely no charge. To celebrate, we’re throwing a party: It’s time for a Welcome Back Weekend!
The Welcome Back Weekend is available to all former players. Just log in to any Star Trek Online account that has a valid retail key applied and play the complete game!
The event begins Wednesday, August 4, 2010 at 11:59 p.m. Pacific and ends Monday, August 9, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. Pacific.
If you haven’t updated Star Trek Online in a while, head over to our download page to grab the latest version and reduce your patching time!
Be sure to log in and see what we’ve been up to. And thanks, as always, for your support.
I'm going to start trying to schedule things in the Event system for us to do as a fleet. Perhaps an STF or a Fleet action or something. Be a bit rough to coordinate, but I'm going to try and do better at scheduling "events".
Sometimes when you need to beam down, you don't. You just keep on that collision course for the planet.
The big thing is the aid missions. The "Continue ... Relief" mission button isn't working. It just teleports you to a random mission. So if you have to leave to get shield generators or whatever, you're screwed.

Anyone interested, or am I wasting time?
I'm interested. My schedule can be a bit wonky (and I haven't played in a couple of weeks, and probably won't until I finish up SC2 single player sometime tonight or tomorrow), but I like the idea of doing stuff as a fleet, even if its just a high level DSE.

This tremendous friction . . . is everywhere in contact with chance, and brings about effects that cannot be measured, just because they are largely due to chance" Carl Von Clausezwitz. (1832),
Just so everyone is aware, I've scheduled a event involving a run at Infected on Advanced for tomorrow at 9pm EST, RSVP in game if you're going to be there.
Also, in an effort to have some fun as a fleet, and get to know our fleet mates I'm instituting a "Help a fleet mate out" night on Sundays between 8 and midnight, if you're a high ranking person and you see someone lower in rank online, touch base with that person and see if they'll let you help them.
I will be trying to stick to that one hard.
I'm going to try and keep Friday and Saturday night for STFs, fleet actions, or whatever, but Sunadys I think it'd be fun to just putz around and help other characters with rough missions, or just leveling up in general.
Obviously participation is optional, but I'm just trying to create an environment where we can all have fun, and know when the fun is going to happen.
Remember to check the events list for start times and locations of the events. I'm going to try and be very pro-active on this one.

All the Deep Space sectors seem to have that problem (the Continue.... Relief button not working).
Which sucks because I want to get some diplomatic XP and unless I carry 10 of every commodity, that's not happening.

You should be able to open the replicator and make the commodities you need for the aid missions. Before you warp back to dector space, open the replicator and check.
I actually preferred those missions at the end to hit vice admiral: quick and easy xp and diplo xp.

Oh? They added (back) the ability to replicate commodities now? (Apparently it was available in the early closed beta).
It's more expensive than buying them at a starbase, though. Especially if you find the starbases with the bargain basement prices.

Also, nearby starbases related to an unexplored section of space can tell you what commodities a sector needs.
So you don't really need to carry ten of everything if you do about five minutes of research before-hand. Just a stack of ten of three or so commodity types.

I didn't notice it in the C-Store. 2000CP...
It's still there as a bonus for subscribing someone though, so I'm guessing both is an option. Makes sense, let's someone else "pay" for it for you..
Also, it looks like it'd be cheaper to create a fake person to get the thing for %15 rather than pay $25 for 2000 points....
