Minimum to participate in these is Level 45, and you have to start with Infected.
I'll be online with my Science officer Captain until 4 other level 45 characters pop on, at which time I'm going to switch over. Been trying to get my science officer to a point where he'd be a decent healer for these things. Hard to get any group going without a damned healer involved, and everyone chose tactical or engineer.

So last night I was finishing some Cardassian missions I neglected and got to one where I had to beam into the Fire Caves on Bajor. The caves are made up of deep pits of lava with bridges over them. My team was made up of Chief Medical Officer Thas, Security Cheif T'Pal, Combat Engineer Koonm, and Secruity officer Krev. All had been with me from the beginning, except for Krev who I actually purchased way back when I was a Lt.Commander as I wanted a Tactical Officer Klingon.
Near the end of the caves, during an especially violent combat with some Cardassian Guls, I witness Krev smacked in the face by a Gul. To my horror, the impact knocked him over the edge of the pit and he fell to his "death" in the lava below. I finished the mission a man down, and after I beamed back to my ship, I dismissed Krev. He wasn't a skilled officer, and his death had been particularly memorable and final. I felt that I needed to keep it that way.
Did you at least let him attend his own funeral? And by attend, I don't mean shoving him into that torpedo, kicking and screaming, to be launched into space.
I'm runing late tonight, so if anyone's looking for me I'll be online by 9:30.
In other news, if you played on the test server during the Season 2 test period, make sure you check the special unlocks in the C-Store, the Undine Tribble can be found in there.
So i just bought this because now it looks appealing with the new patch content and the new far lower price. Anything i need to know right off the bat?

Your first ship sucks and we're sorry. Luckily it's pretty fast leveling to get your new command. also, you level up not by just earning experience but spending it as well so make sure you buy your skills.

They now have formal wear in the C-Store.
I figured that they would be past the whole tie thing by then.

Oh didn't know spending the skill points helps you level, thats neat.
How do guilds or whatever work in this game? And do we have one?
Guilds are called Fleets. We did have one at one point. Pretty sure my characters are still members, but I haven't logged in for quite a while. My understanding is that the fleet is pretty dead.
Oh thats unfortunate, i would like to join some kind of fleet but im not all up on how everyone communicates in this game yet. Also i need Shaw to come fix my internet today (finally) so my faulty modem they gave me stops dropping my internet connection every 10 minutes.
Fleet is still active, not as much as before, but we're still around. I play mostly on weekends now. Join the Penny-Arcade channel and look for me online.
In sector space hit 'm' to bring up the map, which has 3 views. One for the galaxy big picture (the arrow icon is "you are here"), one for the local sector block you're in, and one for a text list of systems and zone transition points around you. On either the sector block or system list views you can double click on something to have the autopilot take you there. If you're not in the same block as where you're going, you have to hit the arrow zone transition points along the way to get from A to B.

So for those interested they released the Excelsior class. There is a Commander version, which is free I believe, and a RA version. The RA version seems to be doing better than my Sovereign.
They also added another sector of space just north of one of the Cardassian sectors. When you warp there you get a mission from one of the alien ambassadors you helped in the diplomacy mission on Starbase-39. The mission is pretty neat and includes beaming down to a fully inhabited city with tons of npc and air traffic. After you finish the mission the Ambassador gives out a daily quest that involves helping out the race and seems to be a bit randomized each time you do it involving different systems inside the new sector. Seems like a nice polished set of quests, and the XP reward was pretty nice.
For the low, low price of $18.75, you too can own a virtual item you can only see when playing this game, and will be gone once the servers shut down.

You know, for all the doom saying that goes on, and marketing division jackassery that Cryptic gets into, I really don't think STO or CO is going anywhere anytime soon. Especially not STO. It's actually a fairly popular game with fairly popular DLC, all things considered.
Plus, it helps that it looks like Cryptic's been cleaning house to get rid of all of the incompetent executive developers and dumbass marketing reps lately. That, and the new interactive repeatable mission chains (With puzzles!) they're putting in make leveling less of a bitch.
I mean, personally, a Nebula class starship doesn't have the "wow" factor of playing around with, say, a refit Enterprise or Defiant to me. But then, if you're a hardcore Trekkie, I guess it might.
I don't really see how anyone loses out when it comes to that. Except for maybe the people who want it for free. And it's not that big of a deal to me to care.
Now, if they start selling that mammoth sized Federation dreadnaught that features in some missions, or Liberated Borg (Which people actually bought lifetime subs for. That's a 200 dollar purchase right there.) you might hear me bitching about the store a bit more.

Did this yesterday and it was quite fun. The final space battle was one of the more challenging I've been in. My understanding is there will be a new installment in this 'storyline' each week. Open to all levels past 10 too - nice stuff.
My first time through STO I got bored after about 2 weeks. This time my 30 days wrapped up and I went and got a 60 day card. So -- they have been making good changes.
Sure, fairly easily too dependong on what you want to do.
The Different captain classes can train skills relevent to them to the BO's under their command. So, engineer captains will train extend shield 3 and the like.
There's also a skill trainer in stardock/whatever the klingon place is called.
You do lose all the bridge officer points you've spent on them though.

Since you are not capped on Bridge Officer skill points though, you don't take a permanent hit. Just have to grind a bit to retrain that officer to the appropriate skill level with the new skill.

Usually by the point you need to retrain a Bo, you've probably built up a large merit stockpile.

So i've been checking out the diplomacy rankings.
Turns out that leveling up in diplomacy is a really good thing. It gives you much more variety in missions when exploring star clusters, depending on your rank.
In addition to that, it looks like you can get some neat bonuses if you make it to the highest diplomacy corps ranking.
Also, for those who did the quarantine diplomacy mission, did anyone here ever try to
Administer a lethal "antidote" to the patient and see what happened? I was curious if that would make you fail the mission.
If i could but find a way to make my Orion tactical officer dance on command. I would think of Ambasador as worth every boring moment of diplomacy xp grinding.

Wooo Vice Admiral! That's the fist time I've ever reached the max level in an MMO. Not counting SWG though.
If anyone is interested I've almost got my science officer to level 45... It's taken me a few weeks, but we almost have a fairly reliable STF healer in the fleet since that one guy left us...
Anyone try to use a gamepad with this game? Got myself a logitech since the game seemed to support it - damned if I can map much though.
If there's value for anyone else, here's what I came up with after a few hours of fiddling with it. Gamepad support (while implied in the options menu) doesn't really work. A few controller options appear to be default mapped - you can control your ship with the left stick, left trigger cycles through targets, a few powers are mapped to right front buttons.
You can't remap anything though - or at least anything useful. I found a post in the forums suggesting that they wanted to get controller support into Season 2, but that it might not make it. Not much official word.
Bottom line is it doesn't work, or I'm too thick headed to make it work.

I'm using a heavy cruiser and I switched from Torpedo's to phaser's for the larger arc but my Tactical office was all about awesome torpedo's.
And that skill didn't transfer to the overload beam weapons. Do I just need to get a new officer?

Even worse, despite the completely feeble download speed, the download client still renders Champions Online unplayable with lag.
