I know I don't hang around the MMO forum too much except to pop into the KoL thread every few months but if anyone would be willing to sacrifice a buddy key for me, I'd really be interested in checking it out.
Also, I just got an email from Stardock (Impulse). From today until Thursday (February 25th) apparently the game is $10 off.

So still digging my escort, I think the Engie captain skills help it's survivability immensely, even if your supposed to lean towards cruiser. On that note, I think TAC might be for me next coupled with a cruiser, maybe his offensive abilities might gear it more towards a better offense.
EDIT: FYI I have a couple of buddy keys for those willing.

I recall hearing that if you don't fly the type of ship that your officer is trained for [Eg. Tac officer for Tac ship] you end up missing out on various bridge officer abilities and in the end game are not effective enough at anything.
that's just dumb. you miss out on rank III skills. you can do fine with rank I and II's,a nd can get some rank III's via training from BO's you get as you level, or buying them off other people who got them as they leveled.

So mixing is a perfectly viable end game option then? I'm just trying not to be gimped and useless come then, and I prefer to mix things up from the norm when I play. Thus far I've had more than a few situations where my engie skills saved the hide of my ship, so I've been liking the mix.

Mixing is fine. I've got a tac captain in a star cruiser, and he's great. Once they implement proper BO trading, it'll be even better.

Well, with the end game as it is at the moment, there's not much for which to be viable. But addressing the heart of the question: mixing your class and your ship is fine, and isn't going to gimp you. The space skills you get from your class are useful in any ship, and there are means to acquire rank III skills other than training the bridge officer yourself.
Bleh, servers went down for patch. Will have to try later to get my Klingon Science Officer to Captain. I think I'm up to Commander 9.9 right now or something.
I found out that the 3rd Exploration badges are good for Tier VIII equipment. So I have been farming the DSE encounters as much as possible so that I can get some Captain equipment as soon as I level.
I got an interesting rythm going. 1 DSE then 1 PVP match while the 5 minute countdown cools off, rinse repeat.
Only annoying part is trying to collect the gear from the PVP badges means I have to go across 3 sector blocks and into a whole new sector to get to the PVP station to redeem some PVP badges for gear, then fly all the way back to start earning some Exploration badges again.

This only applies to shields, so farm accordingly.

Do I look like the sort of man who'd go and find unsuspecting Japanese schoolgirls in short skirts and white panties and ask them if they want to see my "Cthulu Special"?

So apparently, Bridge Offciers can't equip blue or purple Mk X equipment. I'm glad I found this out before buying a bunch of purple mk X gear for them.

I was assuming they couldn't equip any Mk IX or Mk X equipment, all pieces I've found of those Mks require Admiral to equip.
It was a change made in beta that allows your BOffs to equip the same level of gear that you can. I have also encountered other gear at all levels that are still bugged in that they were not equipping on my officers and filed a report.
I lost six hours playing this the other day. I have no idea how that happened.
Anyway, my Human Science Cap is LC3 now, and I just got me a bitchin' escort. I still have an Aurora class ship sticking around, but since I plan to pilot mostly science ships, I'm still gonna pump points into them for later tiers (I want a Nebula class research ship, and, someday, one them long-range typa things.)
I haaaate my bridge crew though. I cannot, for the life of me, make them useful.
I hate to tell you this, because the Nebula class is also my favorite class of ship, but it's not in the game. It makes me cry inside to have to log in and look at my godawful fugly ballship, imagining what could have been.
Buuuuuuuuuuuummer.
Regardless, I spent an hour or so (been playing a lot of STALKER) on my escort, and my Ushaan just feels too fragile. Like, it's so fast and packs such a punch things die super quick, but the shields are downright pathetic, even with all my upgrading.
So I think I'm going back to ye olde Aruora class science vessel. I really think Science is the most fun to play combat with, because you get neat abilities to fuck around with.
[edit] also I may as well join the fleet so someone in exquisite expect a tell from Fandyien of the USS Voltaire

wow they really need to fix the ship registry/number bug, this is just stupid
Sure thing. I'd definitely recommend joining the PA chat channel once you're up and running. The folks in there should be able to answer any questions you might have. Also refer to the FAQ I put in the OP. It has a lot of information that new people typically need to know. STO is really good at alt-tabbing so don't be afraid to tab out and refer to the thread if you have questions.

how do i fix it?
Go to the ship customizer and set it back to one of the three defaults, then recustomize. It's expensive.
wow, ya fuck doing that
It's not expensive. When you hit one of the three defaults, the price will shoot up, but will then creep back down as you reset the options to where you had them. As long as you fix it back exactly the way you had it (minus the screwed up registry, of course), it shouldn't cost much of anything.
Got my Klingon up to Lt.Commander last night. Man pvping with a bird of prey is like night and day compared to my fed escort. Aka, escort dies in like 3 seconds, bird of prey drops the hammer of hate then cloaks and comes around and does it again. Way to much fun.

man i just did the Guardian of Forever Mission, that was fucking AWESOME. By far the best and most interesting mission of the game so far. A shame that it took many many many hours to reach something really fun like that.
