I gotta go hunting for a source. Buuut I'm really fairly certain that Myst was set in the time it was released, or at least somewhere in the 80's 90's. I know the protagonist is originally transported to myst from a book he finds in the back of a library. Though the storyline is actually intertwined with the real world, so I should be able to find some hard dates.
The "A long time ago in a galaxy far far away" made me think that "a long time ago" meant longer ago than the French Revolution and the 18th century.
Yeah, same here. Given the sort of time frames you see in the cosmos, I would have thought a few hundred thousand years minimum. Potentially millions or billions.
I'm surprised Yakuza's not on the list yet. The first game takes place in 2005, with an intro in 1996. Yakuza 2's mostly in 2006, but it's got some flashback bits in the 80s, I think? I haven't played it, anyone else know that year?

Bioshock 2's opening sequence takes place 2 years prior to Bioshock (which took place in 1960), and the actual narrative of BS2 takes place 10 years after the opening (1968), not 10 years after the events of Bioshock.
Thanks for the Yakuza and BioShock tips. I guess the 1970 date was left over from before the game actually came out. What's embarrassing is that I already knew that.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 takes place in 2016. No source, but somebody in the game says "5 years ago (blah blah)" referring to the events of MW1. So if MW1 is 2011, MW2 is 2016.
"Marathon" takes place in 2794. Marathon 2 and 3 occur 17 years later, so 2811. Durandal revisits humanity ten thousand years later, and exists at the closure of the universe (which he supposedly calculates to be 15.193792102158E+9 years after Marathon).
I don't see any expansions listed, though I'm not sure why. If they are to be considered, Kane's Wrath starts in 2034, continues in 2046, and concludes in 2052.
I'd have to sit down and play the campaign again to see how much time passes during each act.
Alien Legacy should prove to be an interesting puzzle:
The Calypso was launched in 2119 [manual]; the Tantalus, in 2135 [manual]. The Tantalus is 0.04 percent [sic; pda in game] faster than the Calypso. Both are heading to Beta Caeli. The Tantalus will reach this location 21.3 [pda] years prior to the Calypso, despite 'leaving the Sol system 17 years after the Calypso' [sic; pda]. Beta Caeli is 'over 17 parsecs from Earth' [manual].
edit: we also know that the Tantalus and Calypso are not traveling FTL. 17 parsecs equates to 55.42 lightyears. 'Over', in this context, probably means 'just below 18', so somewhere between 55.42 and 58.68 lightyears - using real parsecs and lightyears.
Interestingly, the real Beta Caeli is closer to 90 lightyears away.
Finally, the pda entry "last contact" was received in 2150, but the entry shows it was broadcast in 2141.
Can we derive the start date of the game from that information? I feel like there's just barely enough there.

Damn right. I had a LOT of free time on my hands back then.
It's simple really:
For some reason I thought Alien Hominid was set in 1997 but that's just when Men in Black came out.

I mean you could do a Pro Evo every year, a FIFA, a Madden most years, a good load of NBA games and NHL games every year too.
I feel dirty even typing it's name.
Hey, it was a fun game. Exploding CDs, guys dressed up like bees on roller skates(blades?) with shields, yeah. Don't look at me like that!
Great list btw, I cracked up at all the War 40K at the bottom, for some stupid reason.
Snowballs in peril! Action/Puzzle = Snowball's Chance E1 (it's free now!)
tl;dr Bioshock 2 is 1968, not 1970.
Also, in regards to flashbacks and the like...I think we should only include those dates if they're playable in some form.
I'd have to sit down and play the campaign again to see how much time passes during each act.
