Early nukes only lower pop, reduce defense, and make fallout. Later nukes (ICBM and Boomer submarines) can destroy cities and kill everything in a 2 hex radius from the detonation hex.
And Russia gets a bonus to Uranium resources.
I rather strongly suspect some parts of the Earth in the first games I play will be a lovely shade of glowing green by the time I'm done. Multiplayer games with multiple nuclear-armed nations would probably look a lot like Defcon.
One day, many years from now, there will come a time when there is but one man remaining. The last man. He will look upon what has become of the Earth, what we in our folly have wrought, and he will scream. He will scream the last scream of all mankind, through the storms and the dust, ash and undying fires of oblivion.

They hurt, but the later nukes actually have even shorter range than the early one- only 8 hexes. (when you consider the blast radius is 2 hexes....) so less Defcon, more "kill it far far away from our borders!"
EDIT: looks like the Civ4 Airbase improvements are gone...no land-based air bases besides cities.
Evasion
Unit Types: Melee, Ranged
Prerequisites: Siege II or Bombardment II
Effects: Reduces damage taken from interceptions by 50%.
That's probably an error right? As far as I can tell, only air units can be intercepted, and Siege is an air-promotion, though Bombardment is not....
Yeah i noticed a few odd things in that manual.
From what i read uranium isent going to be all over. You'll be very lucky to have a source within your borders and nukes/GDR takes 2 uranium so unless you have multiple sources your pretty screwed.
Check out the goddamn citys--every citizen requires 2 food per turn and the max tiles a city can work is 3 tiles out. Food is going to play a huge role in city placement though theres some other crazy stuff to like desert tiles giving you solar panels, rivers giving you water wheels and mountains giving you alot of other stuff to. Capital placement is even more important then before.
Nah, it's one of those ghey-ass strategy games that only nerdlingers who live in their momma's basement play. I spend enough time studying for my intro to bio exam, why would I want to think in a game??? Oscar Meier should take a hint from 2k Marin and make an FPS. I'm like totally jacked for the upcoming XCOM, it's gonna be the first game in the series that's, like, actually fun to play. I wanna shoot behind the covers and regenerate the healths rather than plan ten million turns in advance like I was playing fucking Checkers or something. In the meantime I'll play Madden Reach and slam jack-n-cokes and pop my collar and wear my Yankees baseball cap backward with the brim folded up with the rest of my brosephines and Brolo Tomassis.

So the game comes out 4am tues for me and i have class at 10am tuse. Now should i wake up at 4 am and play till 10? My roommate might not enjoy me playing at 4am but he fucking owes me for waking me up at 7am every morning.
Why isent there civ5 shirts? i want to be wearing my shirt to class so other civ5 players can see me with their civ5 shirts on and we can talk about how awesome civ5 is.
I would like to pause for a moment, to talk about my penis.
My penis is like a toddler. A toddler—who is a perfectly normal size for his age—on a long road trip to what he thinks is Disney World. My penis is excited because he hasn’t been to Disney World in a long, long time, but remembers a time when he used to go every day. So now the penis toddler is constantly fidgeting, whining “Are we there yet? Are we there yet? How about now? Now? How about... now?”
And Disney World is nowhere in sight.
So if I succumb to the temptation to pre-order this even though I only have a couple hours to play this week, is there any reason to buy it from Steam directly instead of through Direct2Drive for the same price but with the first DLC thrown in?
They missed out Test Of Time and the Call to Power games.
Of the various older Civ games, Test Of Time is probably the best one.
Talking of ToT, you played it in a window rather than full screen.. I wish you could do that in Civ 5 (and 4) without having to screw around. (and if you resize the window it resizes what's displayed rather than increasing/decreasing the area that is drawn instead.. at least that's what happens in Civ 4)

Wow I didn't know there actually was a board game before the first Civ.

The expansions of Civ2 were pretty modest by today's standards. The raw numbers had 39 scenarios added between the two packs, created by both fans and staff. Some of the setups were pretty crazy for those times, at least given the historical bent Civ was supposed to have. There was a Mars complete with aliens, a Midgard with elves and goblins, and one that probably would not have gone over so smoothly in the latter-day political climate: Jihad: the Rise of Islam.
Holy hell.

Your Avatar fits this post so well.
Sick post, Seth Brogen.
Store Civ 5 or steam Civ 5? I know they both use steam, but I love me some proper manuals. (they do have proper manuals like Civ 4 right?)
EDIT: Actually, forget that. It's cheaper on amazon by £5. Nuts to buying it on steam.

This is beautiful.
The Civ crowd is too classy and sophisticated for that.
Oh wait...
And Disney World is nowhere in sight.
But then I feel sad that all games are not Alpha Centauri 2.
Beta Centauri, if you will.

Those weren't Sid Meier IIRC.
It's only sort of related. My dad owns it, I've played it. Interesting game, but not great.
I never played Call to Power, I heard it wasn't as good as Test of Time so I never bothered with it.

Both were cheap cash in on the name that weren't a quarter as good as the real sequel to Civ 2. Which wasn't Civ 3 either.
France>England eh?
