first collector ship on insanity is fucking shit. You get one piece of cover, flanked by scions, and the harbingers stun attack just fucks me over every time. Pops me out of cover and then I am raped by the scions as shepard does a little dance .
Like insanity is pretty fun most of the time. It just makes you move a little slower and makes the squadmates actually useful, but this is just dumb. One piece of cover, and my squadmates die within 3 seconds of the fight starting.
i am kind of regretting picking Vanguard again, although the shockwave power is really handy, and charge is a lot of fun if you are dealing with weaker groups. i enjoy charging and beating guys to death.
unfortunately i find that the most effective way to fight is from a distance with accurate weaponry, so maybe infiltrator or soldier would have been a better choice. ah well.
If you can't enjoy playing a sub-optimal class that charges into people's faces, sending them flying away in slow motion at which time they are set on fire with an incendiary point blank shotgun blast as much as another class because it's not the most effective way to play the game, then I am sorry, but you might not have any concept of fun.
my concern is that charging tends to get me killed, and is best saved for the last few foes, which is pretty anticlimactic and in general unhelpful, and so i end up spending a lot of time shooting at medium range with a pistol. this is less fun than sitting at medium range with a rifle and doing what i'd be supposed to do with a medium range class.
that said i'm having plenty of fun with the vanguard; i just wish the class focused more on being survivable.

My tactic at this point - and I feel your pain, knockback into gunfire and Scion shockwave is frustrating every time you meet it - is to move to one far edge of cover and when Harbinger fires the knockback missile, move to the other edge. Alternatively, if you stick your head up just before it's reaching your cover, it'll swerve upwards, you duck back down, and it goes over without hitting anything.
It's one of those things that you have to learn because otherwise you rely on luck and the knockback situation crops up a few times.

Charge in either of the evolved forms is great. Shields refill, you kill anything that's down to health, and you can move anywhere. Sometimes you need to just hop back to cover, but it's usually wonderful.

What you should be doing with charge is flanking. Don't charge into the front of a group of enemies and expect to survive. But if you see a guy off out of the group, charge to him, take his cover and set up flanking shots to support the other guys.
The downside is you don't need to. The game is easy enough on normal difficulty that you CAN just plug away with your heavy pistol at medium range and win any fight.

I always found Praetorians, the few of them you see throughout the game, to be much harder on Insanity because the slowly but surely flank you, keep you pinned with that annoying death beam, and like to smash the ground when they start taking hits, stunning you and leaving you ready for death raying. Couple that with them usually having husk backup and I die to them more then Harbinger and Scion combined.

In my own experiences with charge, I've found that charge works best when you're careful picking out a target to use it on.
I find charge works great against the guys using heavy weapons in a group of opponents. For whatever reason, the AI usually tends to put them in cover at the back of a group. Using charge, you can move instantly into range to take them out, then proceed to take over the cover they were using. At this point, you effectively have a nice crossfire set up between you, and your squadmates laying down fire at your old position.
I played through on Normal and I remember my Heavy Charges still took very little health off of enemies. Do the melee damage upgrades boost the charge damage?

Correct me if I'm wrong but charge seems less about doing damage but more about mobility/positioning/flanking and instant shield recharge.
It's the shotgun + melee that does the bulk of your damage.

Damn, I assumed the charge wasn't very good and never upgraded it on my Vanguard game (which happened to be my first playthrough). Now I want to try it again.
So the big question.....that I don't think anyone here has admitted to doing...
Have any of you used the promotional armor?
it looks freakin horrible
terminus and collectors are ok.... if you want to look a compact stealth bomber or Guyver
I'm kinda surprised I thought I would be all up in the promotional armor...but no appeal..really
I mean Inferno does not look like freakin Iron-Man! You look like a lame astronaut
There's one person here that uses the inferno armor and looks ridiculously doing it. He even posted a link to his gallery like anyone would want to see someone in inferno armor.

Inferno armour would have looked so much better if yo could take the helmet off. Same goes for all of the pre order armour.
I used Blood Dragon all the way through because with no fancy codes or whatever there were only 3 armour sets in the entire game. And +15% biotic power was better than the assorted small gains of the N7 armour and the C. Assualt Armour didn't have particularly useful bonuses.

Yeah, the game is so hard that those bonuses actually matter.
I actually like looking at my Shepard's face so it's the more-or-less default N7 armor for me. Which looks rather nice, imho, especially looking back on the armors of ME1.

I watched those videos of the collector ship, and it just doesn't work like that. My team literally dies in seconds. No matter what I do, they just fucking keel over instantly.
Garrus and Miranda. I tried miranda and grunt and the same fucking thing happens.
So I'm pretty much at the point of no return I think:
Wrapped up just about all the side shit, then picked up Mr. Roboto and the Reaper IFF. Wasn't prepared for what happened after that. At first I was like "wait, why am I getting in a shuttle? I've done like everything ever." and then SHITSTORM.
Despite having run out of fresh dialog with them, I miss the crew

That's... odd. Do you tell them to take cover?
I basically tell them to take the farthest cover, then use Warp a bunch. Sometimes there are places they get confused and die easier, but I haven't had it happen too often.

poor innocent -Tal, where do you think Miranda got the idea to put a chip in Shepard's head ? :winky:
My thoughts exactly.
Or throw Jack into space.

This.
If you think heavy charge is ineffective you're not playing the class right.
you have to use charge tactically to hit the right targets and flank, instead of charging into a group and hoping your class has enough survivability

(Unless you're playing on insanity.)
Yeah, the game is so hard that those bonuses actually matter.
Plus if I'm going to be a space wizard I'm going to want the most powerful magic space missiles possible.
my current Shepard is wearing a charming black-with-white-and-gray-accents affair
I wish there were more armor parts, I loved mixing and matching them for a neat visual effect.
How does he have barrier up? Isn't that what a purple healthbar signifies?
Biotic classes have purple shield bars. Everyone else has blue. There's no functional difference.
Garrus and Miranda. I tried miranda and grunt and the same fucking thing happens.
Huh, I don't remember that at all from my vanguard playthrough.

I don't know how anyone can otherwise. You can't wear these if you're wearing some stupid DLC armor.
