Wii Won't Update...afraid to turn it off.

I'd put this in the Wii megathread but its time has passed...

I just hooked up my Wii after having it disconnected for a few weeks (been busy) and I wanted to update it for the browser. It's currently version 2.0u.

It went to the "Updating..Do not turn the power off. Please wait a moment." screen with the bar that starts with a little sliver of blue to start. It hasn't moved for the past fifteen minutes but I don't want to turn it off and have a bricked console.

I know it's not my wireless internet, I'm using it now from my laptop. I figure it wouldn't have gone that far if the connection had failed anyhow.

Nintendo's customer support line is closed so you guys are my only source of info on this.

Thanks.

Okay, I shut it off. It's not bricked.

I guess this was a rather pointless thread...sorry. I panicked, what can I say.

    edit:

I did a connection test, it passed and said "A new update is available would you like to do it"(paraphrased) and I hit yes. Looks like it's not moving again. I guess Nintendo's servers are getting hammered or something.

No browser for me tonight...guess I'll have to go get my porn from the internet or something.

I had the same thing happen to me tonight (just check my thread I've been in all afternoon). I got updated with the weather channel by 6:00 or so, and around 9:15 when I want to show my bro the new stuff I got, nothing wants to work and I get 51340 errors. When I try to start a new connection with the same NWC dongle I have, it says something about a 41313 and ANOTHER update. I declined it just to be safe.

WTF is going on? I hope a hammering is all it is, but damn, they need to fix this and quick.

oh, and don't worry to much about the browser. It's really only good for looking up guides when you get stuck in a game.

I'm looking around on the browser right now. The browser is keen, but not absolutely necessary. But hey, it's free right?

hell, people always take free stuff. I mean, if somebody was handing out free Cyanide, you'd take it. Wouldn't use it, but you'd probably take it.

The browser is really cool if you set up a private webserver on your home network, and set up a flash video player. Can download and play movies on your Wii, poor man's media center. ;)

I played some Geist for a while, picked it up for $7 at Fry's and decided to try now.

It's updating quite rapidly, about 75% done now. Looks like it was just a temporary issue.

Hey, sometimes Connection Test will work, but the actual sending/recieving data will have issues if your wifi router is on a certain channel.

Try changing your wifi router to Channel 1 or Channel 11, and then try updating.

For reference, I had no problems with my Wii on Christmas Day, but every day after that I couldn't connect to the Wii Shop channel; after some tinkering and swearing, changing my router channel fixed the problem instantly.

I think my setup will be fine now, but I think a lot of people's problems are based on wireless interference, both with routers and with the WFC dongle. I've no widespread evidence for it, but that's always been my problem. If you or anyone else are still having troubles when the hardwire LAN dongle comes out, I'd say to just buy that and see if it solves your dilemma.

Does Nintendo send you a message every time a system update is available?

I took my Wii away from my network over Christmas (after I had updated for weather and intertubes channels). When I got back I did a connection test and it gave me a weird system code (that had no definition according to nintendo.com) and asked if I wanted to update. I didn't do the update but everything seems to work fine (messages and channels and stuff).

Was it 41313? If so, I had that too when I could finally reconnect online last night. I didn't update either.

And today I got a message from Nintendo saying "The Forecast Channel goes live today!" and tells me to hit the update button in the message to get it......but I already have it? Are they just sending me the messages I missed out on so far?

I got the same message on Christmas Day, and it was also after I had already updated and gotten the Forecast Channel. I think it was just a blanket message they sent to most everyone, although I had to tell one of my Wii-owning friends to update manually, because he didn't even know the FC was live.

I think the messages with the big announcements like that sit on the magical Nintendo servers and wait for everyone who connects their Wiis to the internets. I received all of those messages over the course of the day I first connected.

The error I got was 61212. Nintendo.com said they did not have any specific information for it.
