So there's this fantasy series. It's got lots of ice and a good amount of fire. Sometimes people sing. That's pretty much the gimmick.
Oh, and then lots and lots of political intrigue, backstabbing, trickery, subterfuge, secret alliances, incest, whoring, battles, kids that aren't horribly annoying, pirates, dragons, a midget, some magic that isn't constantly driving the story, mercenaries, assassins, and a fuck ton of other stuff.
It's a remarkably well written series whose last thread reached over a hundred pages, so here's a new one.
Use spoilers so as not to discourage new readers from popping in here.

The SOFAI threads can go even more downhill?

I have the feeling Martin is going to dangle false hope by splitting off some of the ending chapters (which take place after AFFC chronologically) into the next book. Then he'll be able to say "I already have a bunch of chapters finished, I anticipate being finished in a year".
He already basically admitted that's a possibility.

On the down side I now have to actually come in much more often in case someone posts him announcing the finish.
Pick your side now peanut gallery. There can be no quarter given, no middle ground taken. Those who pledge against me shall suffer.

New sig, finally. Thanks.
Wait until one of them is desperate for your support and then secure a better position by requiring a forced marriage to one of your progeny.
This is pretty much why I've written off SOFAI from my future reading list. I might not even read dance knowing he'll probably die before finishing the series.
Jordanitis claims another victim. And I'm not happy about that. :x

I kid. About the fat. Kind of.

The middle is by far the most difficult part to get through, in my experience, and based on what I've been told by other writers. It can be quite the pain in the ass trying to finesse or, in some cases, force all of your plot threads in the direction you want them to go. Only gets more difficult the more complex the story, which may partly explain Martin's dithering.
"Writer's block" is really just another way of saying "I don't know what to do! How do I make this work!" and that's probably what Martin has suffered from these last couple of books.
On the plus side, maybe this means he will speed up toward the end.
