Alright, so this might be a dumb question, but I haven't ever intended on getting a PS3, so I never bothered to follow it for a technical aspect.
Are PS3 game discs Blu-Ray discs, or are they some other proprietary format?
I know that eventually PS2 discs were DVDs, but the first round of games, or so, were on those proprietary blue discs; is anything similar happening with the PS3?
The reason I ask is because my father and I were discussing the PS3 the other day on the way to work, and he asked me this very same question, wondering if SOny might be able to cut their losses on the lackluster PS33 demand through a massive pricedrop by removing Blu-Ray capabilities from the system. It'd be a major blow, sure, but it's a potential move of last resort, rather than pulling the system entirely.
I imagine that the answer is that yes, PS3 discs ARE Blu-Ray, and there is no way that Sony could remove Blu-Ray from the PS3, ever, but I figured it was worth asking.

Also, the PS1 game discs that had blue backs were just regular CDs. Except, with blue backs.

Incorrect, They do not conform to the ISO-9660 standard. They have modified sectors that allow for more space at the expense of data integraty checksums.
I can't mount a PSX cd under linux.
