...whoa. There isn't an American even entered into ski cross.

I'm surprised NBC didn't just claim there wasn't any women's ski cross this year.

And it was close to getting ruled no goal on that bullshit intent rule. Thankfully, the refs here don't suck as much.

    Regional limitations I think.

You can rewind on NBC too, and everything is up eventually. It lack of live stuff and delay in putting up replays that people are complaining about

Yea the womens ski cross is great right now. I'm having a hard time between the hockey and ski cross. Few big wipe outs in ski cross so far too. The nords and canadians had some real nice runs on the qualifying. The top 16 are going to be awesome races. It seems there is more wreckless passing in the skiing compared to boarding, I like, I like.

I can't help but think this hockey game is going to go end in the 10 minute over time with the 4 on 4

The projections are based off remaining events, not totals. I'm not going to go down event by event, but again, the point is that prior to the games, the Canadians were thought to be strong favorites in a lot of events which have yet to award medals.

The projections so far have been inaccurate for Canada and a couple of others, but to call them all "wildly inaccurate" is disingenuous.

An interesting exercise would be to go event by event with those that remain and look at exactly where Canada is expected to pick up these 16 medals, but I don't care that much.

Predicting 160% of actual (Canada's total medals) is wildly inaccurate, and those projections have been high in every event except snowboarding.

Hell, the projections suggest they'll win 3.6 more medals in the 4 remaining short track events when they've won 1 so far, in one of the events they have nearly no contenders, and two of the events are relays where they can get at most one medal. It projects 2.8 more medals in speed skating in 4 events, 1 of which has no Canadian competitors, 2 of which are team events that feature the same athletes that have underperformed expectations. They project 2.6 more in freestyle skiing with 3 events to go and only 2 with qualified Canadians.

The whole thing presumes the expectations were accurate when so far they've proven inaccurate, even event to event. Everyone acknowledges this, yet those projections are still the base. That's why its not that useful for projection unless we presume the variance is random, which its clearly not.

You're committing a statistical fallacy here. We might, for example, predict that when we flip a coin 1 million times, we'll get 500 000 heads. (I.e. Canada will win X many medals.) Then we might flip the coin 100 000 times, (I.e. we're now halfway through the Olympics) and come up with 25 000 heads (I.e. Canada is far off pace to winning X many medals). Nevertheless, we would predict that for the next 900 000 flips (I.e. the remainder of the Olympics) we'd get 450 000 heads (I.e. maintaining our original 50% expectation).

Unless, unless, the 25 000 heads / 100 000 flips (I.e. Canada not winning as many medals as expected halfway through) is a significant enough abnormality to indicate that there is a confounding factor correlated to the result of the coin (E.g. the coin is actually unfair; I.e. somebody's spiked the water in the Canadian athletes residence or some shit).

That is to say, simply because the prediction has been inaccurate so far doesn't mean that the prediction will be inaccurate heretofore, unless there is a distinct causal variable that was unaccounted for by the prediction and that will remain in effect heretofore, which can only be inferred by the prediction being inaccurate.

Wow that first 4 pack had some insane bumping and passing.

Its harder to dash their expectations if you don't place them high on a precarious perch.

I can't help but feel her straining the knee after that first run had something to do with it. She bled off speed dramatically after that, and that whole second run didn't look all out like we have seen her put down before. Its alright, I',m really thinkin ash is gonna take this on her home course. I am oping so anyway. She looks great.

Loss of the last 2 world championships, but win at the last 4-nations cup. Overall though, over the last 5 years, Canada has won the majority of matchups.

Holy shit, Sven Kramer, gold medalist on the 5km speed skating and dead ringer for the gold on the 10km, got sent into the wrong lane during a lane change by his coach, either by misunderstanding between him and the coach, or because the coach was wrong. He was ahead by 3seconds when it happened. He DSQ'd and the korean prodigy won the gold.

Heh the ski-cross finals are funny in the countries represented:

    Small Final (5th-8th place):
    Canada
    Swiss
    Sweden
    Norway

    Big Final (1st-4th):
    Canada
    Swiss
    Sweden
    Norway

    I sense a trend!

If you've been to any long-track events this Olympics you know that the audience is about half Dutch. They apparently follow their skaters around like they're the Grateful Dead. They even have a Dutch brass band play during intermission.

I can only imagine the reaction in the oval. There may have been an actual sad trombone...
